Executive Director
Our remarkable staff continues to provide amazing care to patients and families, which is evident
in the abundant and sincere notes we receive from
those we serve. In 2010, we took steps to care for
our staff, creating a wellness committee to educate
each other on the importance of self care.
Volunteers have to be one of the most constant
aspects of any organization, especially a not-for-profit organization such as Hospice of North Central
Ohio. Our volunteers remain strong in numbers and
provide innumerable support services and processes
to our organization.
In 2010, we updated our business plan to address
competitor’s efforts so we remain strong for our
communities. We are proud to be a not-for-profit service agency with a keen sense of mission
that challenges us to take on the most difficult,
unmet needs with creativity, commitment and
moral resolve.
Change happens, but our strength will always
remain in the reliable service we provide to our
families. We will continue to do the hard work that
otherwise would not be done. We will continue to
invest in the future to ensure that Hospice of North
Central Ohio remains on solid ground for generations to come. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said “The
ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in
moments of comfort, but where he stands at times
of challenge and controversy.”
While change can be welcome, refreshing and
necessary, it is also assuring to know that a few reliable constants remain the same. In our 2007 annual
report, founding executive director of Hospice of
North Central Ohio Ruth Lindsey used Christian
Morgenstern’s famous quote “Home is not where
you live, but where the people understand you.”
Ruth wrote how we, at Hospice of North Central
Ohio, understand the needs of our dying patients,
the needs of their families and caregivers, and the
needs of those who are grieving.
That understanding has grown deeper with each
patient, family and caregiver that we have served over
the years. This then, becomes the source that drives
us to remain vigilant to the ever changing health care
climate as it affects those with chronic, life limiting
disease…a disease which changes their lives and the
lives of those that they love forever. These are the
lives of our community.
There are many other constants that Hospice
of North Central Ohio brings to this wonderful place that we call home. The dedication and
support of our Medical Directors, Dr. Christopher Boyd, Dr. Ajay Chawla, and Dr. Katherine Hess
have remained a constant through advising, providing direction to the organization, and caring for
patients and families.

support that reflects the important contributions made by these
men and women, Hospice of North Central Ohio has become
a national partner of We Honor Veterans, a pioneering campaign
developed by National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

is to provide the best possible care
specifically tailored for Veterans, meeting their goals of care in their preferred

The Need for Hospice
A common sentiment from families who have been helped by Hospice of North Central Ohio
is a wish that they would have known about hospice care sooner, or been referred to hospice
sooner. In truth, hospice care is about the final months of life…not just the final days.
Why is it then that 35% of Hospice of North Central Ohio patients who died under hospice
care were in the program for less than seven days?
Acknowledging the need for, and accepting end of life care is sometimes even harder than dealing with death. But end of life care does not mean you have given up hope. Through hospice care,
there is still hope for a peaceful death; hope to spend final months, weeks or days free of pain; and
hope for quality time with loved ones in the familiar surroundings of wherever they call home.
Generally, Hospice of North Central Ohio cares for those with a life expectancy of 6 months
or less. With doctors, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, chaplains and companion volunteers,
the longer a patient is in our care, the more our highly skilled team can help.

Hospice House at 1050 Dauch Drive in Ashland was dedicated in November 2006.
Please join us Sunday, November 6, 2011 for a community gathering as we celebrate
Hospice House’s 5 Year Anniversary. Refreshments, entertainment, and tours will be available from
3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Hospice House is a beautiful, twelve-bed inpatient center that is a true testament to our
community-supported organization. It serves families in a homelike atmosphere and is available
to patients who meet one of the following criteria: assistance with pain or symptom
management; medication adjustment, observation or other stabilizing treatment; short-term
respite care for caregiver relief; or transitional care from hospital to home.
Your support through all of our Seasons of Change has truly benefited our communities
through Hospice House and our many other services. Thank you.
