SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YOU ARE INVITED! Annual Festival of Ministries NEXT WEEKEND After all weekend Masses I am not an ordained priest, I am not a religious brother or sister. However, I am studying for the priesthood, I am a Eucharistic minister, I take communion to the homebound and the sick, I am a sacristan, I am an altar server, I greet visitors at Mass & welcome new parishioners, I proclaim the Word of God, I make music to praise God with joy, I pray, celebrate, study, and listen. I am a catechist, I teach God’s love to children, youth and adults, I am a helper in many areas, I do fun things with children and youth, I tutor our young people. I cook and deliver food, I gather food, clothing, and baby items for needy families, I comfort the widowed, support the caregiver, I make food for funerals, I sew quilts for the seriously ill. I plan and organize celebrations, I serve on councils and committees, I help with clerical work, I clean up different areas of the church, I work on the website, library, and parish bulletin. I support the parish financially, I support the parish in countless ways. I am deeply nourished, I am God’s steward, and I am blessed! WHO AM I??? Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I: Wisdom 9:13-18b How can we know God, unless God gives us wisdom? The first reading from the Book of Wisdom is a set of reflections from Solomon's prayer. The questions do not look for answers; they serve as an act of praise. In today's passage, God's wisdom offers understanding on how to live. Have you enjoyed answering the questions from The Ultimate Catholic Quiz by Karl Keating (Ignatius Press; Ignatius.com)? Would you like to continue learning about your faith? Stay tuned for information about our Parent Formation sessions in the St. Paul Center. Our first session will be announced shortly. We’re working on constructing a special space for these sessions, which will a fun and informative time for parents. Reading II: Philemon 1:9-10, 12-17 Receive one another, not as a slave, but as a very dear brother or sister. Paul's letter to Philemon provides a good example of how Paul could encourage a member of one of his communities to act in a responsible, Christian way. Treating a slave as a brother was unthinkable in the social context of the era. Paul's short letter to Philemon illustrates living by God's wisdom rather than human wisdom. Our faith in art: Be sure to look up The Virgin and Child from the workshop of Bernardino Luini (c. 1480 – 1532). This painter lived in the same area (Lombardy, Italy) and at the same time as Leonardo da Vinci (who died in 1519). Both artists trained at the Lombard School and doubtless used some of the same people as models for their work. Some of da Vinci’s work has been attributed to Luini (and the other way around, of course). Gospel: Luke 14:25-33 Whoever does not renounce possessions cannot be my disciple. In the New Testament, Jesus is the incarnation of God's wisdom, the teacher who taught humans how to live. Jesus uses examples from human experience to illustrate messages with deeper meanings. In today's Gospel Jesus uses the example of a wise builder to stress that discipleship is an allconsuming vocation. CCE Classes Begin Soon: CCE classes will begin on Sunday, Sept. 18; Tuesday, Sept. 20; and Wednesday, Sept. 21. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation As we progress through the Year of Mercy, we understand that forgiveness is an important aspect of mercy. Our parish is hosting a “Forgiveness Seminar” to be held on Saturday, September 17. In anticipation of that event, here begins a series on forgiveness based on presentations I have given. I hope it will be a fitting “warm-up!” Be aware of the pain. One of life’s first great truths: Life is difficult. Accepting that it hurts is a first step toward the healing process. Forgiving is a process. It doesn’t happen all at once. Full forgiveness can be difficult and painful to come by. That’s why it takes a person of courage to do this. Complete forgiveness may come step-by-step, bit by bit. We may never completely get there, but it is important that we try. It has been said, “Time heals all wounds”. I don’t believe that’s true. We all know persons who have walked around with pain for 30 or 40 years because they’ve never set the burden down. Time alone does not heal all wounds. Love alone heals all wounds. Decide to let go. Emotions of anger and sadness are normal. Accepting them is okay, but dwelling on them is not. There comes a time of realizing that to continue to focus on the injury and the injurer simply causes more unnecessary suffering. Work on it. I can stop throwing energy into thinking about the person or event that hurt me. I can practice walking away from nagging thoughts that hurt. I can choose to act differently. Some techniques might include: Develop the Intention of Being a Forgiving Person. “This is who I am.” 1. Write a letter that you will not send. 2. Take inventory of your actions. How did you contribute to the situation? What motivated you? How will you respond differently next time at each of the key junctures? 3. Create compassion by understanding. Look at the other's motivations. What made his/her actions inevitable? You do not have to approve or agree. Simply try to understand. Examining reasons behind a person’s behavior does not lessen that person’s responsibility but may help explain it. 4. Wish the offender well. In the brunt of anger, especially then, wish him or her well. Even artificially done in the beginning, over time this will become genuine. This may or may not include reconciliation. You don’t have to be best friends with the person, just offer good will. Praying specifically for that person can bring us closer to that stance. It’s hard to pray for someone and not be moved toward good will. Of course, the good will may be offered while at the same time taking into consideration current issues of trust and safety in the relationship between the individual and the injurer. Forgiveness is a process—it doesn’t happen all at once. Forgiveness is not a “one-time thing” when it has to do with someone who continues to berate you. My experience is that my own behavior in response “tones down” the negative behavior of the other person. Reacting positively rather than negatively helps me, and it’s beginning to help the other person, too. I CAN Pray. “Loving God, give me a heart of mercy” (from the Talmud) I CAN learn about myself. In what ways can I learn about my personality, my tendencies, and strive to alter them? We can pray for those who harm us. It’s good to be very specific in our prayer. Pray that this particular evil might be overcome. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
