In other words, if something cannot be experienced by our senses, then it does not exist. When I was about sixteen years old, I worked for a man who firmly believed that if he could not touch something, or hear it, or see it, or taste it – then it did not exist – even God. He said that he didn’t believe God existed, because God can’t be experienced with the senses. I remember feeling very sorry for that man. He must have been very lonely and afraid at times, I thought. I began to wonder whether he could ever love because love can’t be placed under a microscope in a laboratory or in a test tube. Love is not something you can touch or hear. But love is there – it exists. When Jesus our Lord appeared to His disciples, Thomas was away and missed the visit Jesus made. When the other disciples told him that the Lord had visited them, he would not believe it and said: “I will not believe unless I touch the nail marks in his hands or place my finger in the wound in his side.” Thomas was letting human senses get in the way of faith. When Jesus returned a week later and Thomas was there, Jesus tells him to touch him and to know that Jesus was really alive. Then Jesus says something very important for us to hear. He says: “Blessed are they who have not seen, and still believe.” It was, in a sense, easy for Thomas to believe. He actually got to touch Jesus. We, on the other hand, are those who have never been able to really touch Jesus in the flesh, but we believe! Our belief is not founded in our senses, but in our faith. It is our faith in Jesus that “proves” his presence among us. Each time we come to Mass we are once again strengthened in our faith. When the Sacred Host is raised and Jesus becomes present among us, our response in faith is the same as the one Thomas gave: “My Lord and my God.” So, let’s be strong in our faith and be bold witnesses of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God. By believing in him, we will have life in his Name! 5 0 th A n n i v e r s a r y C l a r i f i c a t i o n The current issue of the diocesan newspaper “Catholic Life” has a picture of the 50th Anniversary Invitation for Msgr. Para mas información -- Church Tour TBD ------- UPCOMING AND ONGOING EVENTS DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The forms of devotion are as follows: The Image of Divine Mercy — This image is connected with the vision that Saint Faustina had in 1931. "In the evening, when I was in my cell," she wrote in her Diary, "I saw the Lord Jesus in a white garment. He had one hand raised in blessing, and the other was touching His garment at the breast. From the fold in His garment there where two large rays: one red, and the other pale. After a while, Jesus said, ‘Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature, Jesus, I trust in You.' I desire that this image be venerated first in your chapel, and then throughout the world." (Diary, 47) The Chaplet of Divine Mercy — Jesus revealed his powerful prayer to Saint Faustina and requested that everyone recite it. Jesus told Faustina, "Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you. (Diary, 1541) Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, the Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist. It may be said at any time, but especially for the Novena of Divine Mercy which starts on Good Friday and during the three o'clock hour (recalling the time of Christ's death on the cross). The Novena of Divine Mercy — Our Lord gave Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena. In her diary, Faustina wrote that Jesus told her, "On each day of the novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy...On each day you will beg My father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls." The Feast of Divine Mercy — Jesus said to Sister Faustina, "I want this image to be solemnly blessed on the First Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy. In that day, the depths of My Mercy will be open to all. Whoever will go to Confession and Holy Communion on that day will receive complete forgiveness of sin and punishment. Mankind will not enjoy peace until it returns to My Mercy." Not only are we to receive His mercy, but we are to use it, being merciful to others by our actions, by our words, and by our prayer; in other words, by practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. By receiving God's Mercy, we are called to be merciful. In the Gospel of St. Luke, Jesus tells us, "Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful." The Divine Mercy message is to venerate God's Mercy, to tell others about it, and to show it by our actions.
