Beachwood City Schools Library System
Named as a 2009 Library of Distinction
he Beachwood City Schools library system
has been named a 2009 Library of Distinction by the Ohio Educational Library
Media Association (OELMA). Beachwood is
one of only two districts so recognized in the
State of Ohio. This award honors districts with
noteworthy school library media centers for
achievement in several areas:
Advancements made by certified school
library media specialists through instruction,
participation in curriculum development, and
integration of instructional technology.
Specialists’ efforts in motivating students
to “become critical thinkers and life-long learners,
who can locate, process, evaluate, synthesize,
and utilize information and continually work
to meet the diverse needs of the students and
faculty.”
Collaboration with the local public libraries,
college libraries, and other types of libraries in
the area.
Creation of a fully automated online library
system that has areas geared for individual
school users.
“The library media center constitutes the
hub of learning in a school. Its resources enable
T
learners to gather, process, and communicate
information. Such skills are critical for today’s
students,” commented Superintendent Dr.
Richard Markwardt. “In Beachwood, we are
fortunate that the community provides the
schools with the necessary resources to sustain
our buildings’ excellent libraries.”

Kindergarten Class Hosts
Young Authors’ Tea
eachwood moms and grandmoms enjoyed
a morning of pastries and beverages while
being entertained by their kindergartener’s stories during Debra Rubenstein’s Young
Authors’ Tea event. Students shared their typed
and illustrated stories about their moms; the
stories were published using each child's actual
spelling. Debra Rubenstein describes this learning process by explaining, “When children are
encouraged to use invented spelling it allows
them to communicate in writing long before
they are ready to spell each word correctly.
Sounding out words and predicting how they
will be spelled reinforces students’ understanding of the connection between letters and
sounds. This lets them experiment with the
spelling patterns they are learning.” Moms were
filled with laughter and heartfelt smiles as they
listened to their little author highlight what was
important to him or her.

s a former graduate of Beachwood
High School, a parent of a graduate of
the Class of 2009 at Beachwood, and a
member of the Beachwood School Board, I
know first hand the potential pressures that
go hand in hand with being a student at
one of the best public high schools in the
State of Ohio. There are achievement tests,
A-P courses, honors courses, OGT testing,
ACTs, SATs, grade point averages, college
applications, and a whole host of school
related issues that can be very overwhelming and anxiety provoking for students and
parents. So what is my advice to Beachwood
students in the summer months leading
into another school year? How can I help
you to better prepare yourselves to succeed
in the upcoming fall semester? While I
know that it is important to do your
mandatory summer reading for the upcoming academic year, how about also doing
some pleasure reading? Find some time to
read something that genuinely interests
you, even if it has nothing at all to do with
school. Lose yourself in a good book, and
just let your mind and imagination do the
rest. For the younger students, parents can
initially give incentives to the kids for the
pleasure reading that they do, and pretty
soon, the kids will undoubtedly read with
no inducement needed.
Summer provides opportunities to
engage in lots of physical activity, and I don’t
necessarily mean organized sports and travel
teams. Find some activity that you like and
continue it during the school year. It might
be bicycle riding or swimming or hiking.
Whatever the activity, not only will the
improvement in physical fitness help make
you a better student, but the self-discipline
that comes with an organized exercise pro-

gram of some sort can easily translate into
improved discipline during the school year—
not to mention, the wonderful health benefits
that accrue by engaging in regular exercise.
How about devoting some time to developing better eating habits? If students of all
ages would make a concerted effort to eat
lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and to limit
the soda, juices, fast foods and junk food, not
only would they be on the road to a lifetime
of healthy eating, but this too would help students perform better in the classroom.
Summer is a wonderful time to develop
a new hobby. It might be taking up an instrument like piano or guitar, taking arts and
crafts classes, trying out for a play or musical,
or just going to a few museums when the
opportunity arises. Studies have consistently
shown that kids who play a musical instrument perform better in school.
As summer winds down, you just might
want to have plain, spontaneous fun, and I
think that is also great. (I don’t mean smoking or drinking!!!) Go to Cedar Point, scream
your head off on the rides, or go to the beach
and just chill out a little bit (with your sunscreen applied, of course). Make an effort to
make a new friend, reach out to someone
who is not as fortunate as you are, do a favor
for a neighbor, hold the door open for an
older adult, show your appreciation when
someone does something for you. If you
make an effort to do something nice for
people, the rewards will come back to you in
multitudes. Yes, school is very important, but
the personal growth that one can experience
when not in school is a crucial part of growth
and development. It will help clear the mind
of stress and tension, and thereby make
school a more fun and satisfying place to be
when you return.
The world of education is becoming increasingly competitive. Members of the media are quick to point out the
respective abilities of students on the international stage.
Particularly in the international “languages” of mathematics
and science, student achievement is being measured, dissected,
and compared among young people from the world’s most
industrialized nations.
Typically, such data is used to illustrate the comparative
weaknesses of public education in the United States. Unfortunately the bar graphs that depict those shortcomings fail to
address the critical fact that public education in the U.S.,
though far from perfect, is in fact a vastly more diverse and
far more inclusive entity than many of the international
educational systems to which it is being compared. While I
am sure that Thomas Jefferson was not envisioning a K-12
Treasurer’s Column
The dismal state of the economy continues to plague all of
us. As with every business, the district continues to review its
expenditures with an eye toward efficiency and reducing costs
that do not negatively impact students. The district pared $1
million from the budget last year (08/09) in discretionary costs
and reduced an additional $800,000 in staffing, due to attrition
and a reduction in force for the 09/10 school year.
The State of Ohio has wrestled with funding levels for all
services, including education, as it attempts to pass a biennial
budget. For the first time in a number of years, the State passed
three temporary budgets—a week in duration for each temporary
measure—in order to run the government as the conference
committee debated the merits of the budget. Governor Strickland
vetoed a record 61 provisions recommended by the conference
committee, some that impacted school funding. School districts,
along with all other public entities are scrambling to try to decipher the language in the bill to determine funding levels for the
current fiscal year (which began July 1st). The district is in the
process of analyzing the financial impact the State’s budget will
have on the schools.
The district has applied for $375,000 in federal stimulus funds,
which are earmarked for special education services. The grant is for
a two-year period and is expected to be “one time” funding.
The district also has applied for school construction funds
in the amount of $20 million dollars (maximum level) at zero
percent interest, to pay for the anticipated high school renovation. The district would save over $7 million dollars in interest
costs if awarded the stimulus funding. The application has been
submitted to the Ohio Schools Facility Commission. The district
will be notified in mid-August if our project will be funded.
Applying for these funds does not obligate the board to move
ahead with the high school project in the event that the district’s
project would not be funded. The district’s application is merely a
place holder and attempt to obtain funding with no interest costs.
public school system when he noted the importance of an “aristocracy of talent” in a republic, the public school system has indeed
become a viable conduit toward that end.
In Beachwood, we are highly aware of the importance of academic
performance as measured by both standardized and criterion-referenced
tests. Our boasts of scholastic excellence must be confirmed by data. We
are highly fortunate that our students continue to score among the highest when measured by local, state, national, and international standards.
However, the worth of an education in Beachwood is demonstrated by far more than placement on a bell curve. It is measured
every day in the lives of our students. The process of assessment
naturally includes the obligatory testing as mandated by the State
of Ohio. However, it also encompasses the ongoing assessment of
students’ needs and the monitoring of students’ progress that take
place each day in every classroom in this district.
If you were able to sit in the superintendent’s chair for just
one day, you would be amazed by the evidence of success that the
students and teachers of Beachwood demonstrate. Some of it, you
may read about in the Annual Report, You and Your Schools, or the
AVI Foodsystems, Inc. became
the district’s food service provider
for the 08/09 school year. Historically, the food service department
was operated by the district. In an
effort to reduce costs and to provide a higher quality of lunch, the
district bid out its food service
operation. Feedback from both
our students and parents has been Michele Mills
Treasurer
extremely positive. The district
also reduced the deficit in the food service program by $45,000.
The district anticipates even greater savings in the upcoming
year, as start-up costs and the cost associated with closing the
district’s internal program will no longer impact the district’s
bottom line next school year.
While the district recently made some difficult financial
decisions, they were a result of the current economy, as well
as the various future uncertainties surrounding public school
funding in Ohio. These decisions were similar to choices families
in all communities across our region and our nation are making
in the present economic climate. We can assure you that these
adjustments were thoroughly considered and were implemented
in a manner that ensured the least disruption to our students
and programming. Our staff continuously demonstrate a high
degree of professionalism and provide tremendous service to
our students, and we value them greatly. The district remains
dedicated to providing an outstanding educational system for its
students while also acknowledging the world in which we live.
We remain optimistic and committed to providing our students
a rich, rewarding, high-quality educational experience. We know
the community has come to expect no less for its children. We
agree, and will work hard to ensure Beachwood remains the school
system of choice for a community committed to “learning for life.”
Beachwood Buzz. However, many of the stories go relatively
unnoticed, flying under the cover of routine daily activities.
Beachwood’s educational excellence transcends the academic
classrooms and spills into the fine arts. It manifests itself in a wide
array of learning opportunities for those with specialized learning
styles. It takes the form of student-directed business plans, robotics,
and accelerated studies. It results in student leadership activities,
volunteering, and displays of civic and social responsibility. It is
reflected in superior library/media programs and comprehensive
student services. It simply resonates throughout the schools and the
community that supports them.
As superintendent, I am aware of the distinct privilege that is
mine. As I glean evidence of success from countless emails, conversations, and personal interactions, I naturally feel a sense of pride
in being associated with such a great school system. However, as I
end my fifth year with the district, I feel an even stronger sense of
indebtedness to the community that made such a school district
possible. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to academic
excellence and for your awareness of its many facets.

Bison Pride Reflected in New Weight Room
A big thank you to the Beachwood
Athletic Boosters for spearheading the
renovation of the BHS weight room! The
Boosters raised over $60,000 through various fundraisers for new equipment and
refurbishing. In addition, the City of
Beachwood generously contributed a
$10,000 donation to this project.
The 2008/09 Boosters president Herb
Schoen summarized, “The Boosters are
thrilled to be able to provide the community
and our student athletes a vastly improved
facility that offers a dynamic mix of new
strength training and aerobic equipment in
a new inspiring environment. Joining
together generous individual donors with
Booster, school, and city resources enabled
the project to get done. The fitness facility
project is a fantastic example of what can
be accomplished when everyone is able to
work together to acquire an asset that
benefits the entire community.” BHS’
maintenance team of Curtis Crowell, John
Heisler, Jim Kunsman, Larry Roberts*,

and Jeff Smith were responsible for bringing the vision to life with the installation of the
floor, repainting of the facility, adding new
electric grids, and putting everything in place.
The weight room, which will not officially
be open to the public until the fall, will be a
great facility that community members can
utilize. A notice will be printed in the Beachwood Buzz this fall with details on the Bison
Gym memberships and hours of operation.

Dr. Richard Markwardt and Wes Darvin the
“Superintendent for the Day.”
Wes Darvin, a seventh grader at Beachwood Middle School, became “Beachwood
Superintendent for the Day” on May 22,
2009, after winning a bid for this honor from
a Friends of Beachwood Orchestra fundraiser. “I had the experience of learning what the
superintendent does first hand. It was interesting,” commented Darvin. He and Dr.
Richard Markwardt, the Beachwood superintendent for the other 364 days, spent part
of the day visiting schools, taking care of
administrative needs, meeting with teachers,
and then enjoying lunch at the Beachwood
High School Bistro.

“Though we don’t have a bartender like Sam Malone [ from Cheers], we have been far more fortunate
because throughout our tenure at Beachwood, each and every one of us has found countless confidants in
teachers and advisors who we trust to not only steer us in the right direction, but to encourage us to take
risks and chase after what we want. These teachers have seen to it that all our needs are tended to and that
we never feel out of place. We have found friends who we rely on in good times and bad and have forged
bonds within the community we call home. We have found comfort in being in this environment where
‘everybody knows our name’.”

Our success is due largely to this amazing group of
dedicated people who make their living preparing
us for a complicated world that will challenge us
far beyond homework, labs, essays, and tests. In
fact, all of our achievements thus far, and all of
those which we have yet to fulfill, will be the result
of the investment our teachers have made in us.
Standing here, I am the product of the devotion
and commitment of my mentors. Without them, I
would have a difficult time doing anything at all,
let alone writing and delivering this speech.”

“Each obstacle we face is a gift, an opportunity to gain wisdom that cannot be gained within classroom walls; it is knowledge that can only be gained from living life.
With each error and setback that we decide to conquer, we learn something new about ourselves and the world. With each new thing we learn, we discover how much
more there is left to be discovered, and that is the most precious knowledge of all, to know how much we do not know. It is with this knowledge that the desire to learn, to
explore, and to live is truly derived.”

Beachwood Bids
Farewell to Retiring
Staff Members
The Beachwood City School District is
proud to announce that Beachwood High
School has been ranked by Newsweek for the
sixth year as one of the 1,500 top high
schools in the country. Public schools are
ranked according to a ratio: the number of
Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and/or Cambridge tests taken by
all students at a school in 2008 divided by
the number of graduating seniors.
BHS has moved in the ranking from
Thank you for your service and dedication
to the Beachwood City School District! Best
wishes for a happy and healthy retirement.
570 to being ranked 415 this year. Principal
Robert Hardis commented, “The jump in
ranking is attributable to more students taking AP courses. Students want the challenge
and feel prepared for AP courses as a result
of the coursework they’ve completed in previous years. It is a credit to our students
who are eager to be challenged and to our
teachers who give them the confidence in
the subject matter to be ready for our most
rigorous courses.”

Beachwood High Students Preserving Voices of the Holocaust
Nina Frankel, a Holocaust survivor
from Poland, is interviewed in her Pepper
Pike home by Beachwood High School junior
Marc Eisenberg, student director of the
school’s Holocaust documentary project.
Frankel was liberated by the Russians in 1945
and came to Cleveland in 1949.
During his first year as Beachwood
schools superintendent in 2004-05, Richard
Markwardt realized the district has a valuable resource in its senior citizens.
The group includes survivors of the
Holocaust – the systematic persecution and
murder of about six million European Jews
by the Nazi regime during World War II.
“They lived a part of history we can’t
afford to forget,” Markwardt said. “Their story
is as vibrant today as it ever was, but there are
fewer voices to share it.”
In 2006, Markwardt approached Sheila
Heyman, who teaches public speaking at
Beachwood High School, about having
students interview Holocaust survivors. The
interviews would be incorporated into a film
as part of a class project.
The result is a student-produced documentary film, “From the Holocaust to Freedom: A Journey to Cleveland.” It’s scheduled
to premiere April 11, 2010. That date is Yom
Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.
“We’re trying to capture some of those
voices,” Markwardt said. “It’s been done
before; there have been many documentaries
on the Holocaust.”
“We want to show how these experiences
shaped the attitudes and choices made by
people who eventually settled in Beachwood and (other suburbs of) Cleveland.”
15 interviews done
In the spring of 2007, the Holocaust
documentary class, taught by Heyman,
was launched at BHS. Eight interviews with
Holocaust survivors were conducted.
About a year later, Chris Jordanek,
technology integration specialist at BHS and
director of Channel 22, the district’s cable television station, was brought into the project.
Students started writing and editing scripts.
As of today, the students have interviewed
15 Holocaust survivors – all of whom live in
Cleveland’s eastern suburbs – plus an American soldier and a non-Jewish, female French
resistance fighter who was captured by the
Nazis during the Holocaust.
“What makes this film unique, compared
to other documentaries on the Holocaust, is it
focuses on what (the survivors) have done
since they came to Cleveland,” Jordanek said.

Beachwood High School junior Marc
Eisenberg interviews Nina Frankel,
a Holocaust survivor from Poland, in
her Pepper Pike home.
Some had entire families “ripped away,”
Heyman said, yet they rebuilt their families,
with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“It’s really been inspiring to see them take
what was a tragedy in their lives and rebuild it
into something positive,” she said.
“These are people who lost everything,
came to America, built families in Cleveland, and
contributed to the city,” said BHS junior Marc
Eisenberg, student director for the project.
Students can relate
Not all of the survivors interviewed were
in concentration camps, Heyman said. Some
were hidden from the Nazis, she said, by
“righteous Gentiles” – non-Jews who risked
their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
“It was really perspective changing,”
Eisenberg said. “These people, (many) about
our age, were ripped from their lives and put
in this situation – all because of their religion.”
“If we had been in Europe at that time, we
would have gone through the same thing.”
About 18 BHS students have taken part in
the project, including 10-12 who have graduated.
The current crew includes Eisenberg;
junior Brad Charna, lead editor of the project; and Andrew Smith, Webmaster and
graphic designer. All are students of Jordanek’s.
Four girls took part, as writers under
Heyman, during the previous two semesters
but are currently doing Senior Search projects.
They are seniors Beth Apisdorf, Inbar
Maayan, Lori Teich, and Arica Turoff.
Heyman, also the school’s director of
theater, and Jordanek are co-advisors. While
Heyman has focused on the script and
research, Jordanek is the technology advisor.
“I wanted it to be more than a historical
document,” Markwardt said. “I wanted it to
have an artistic and spiritual dimension; that’s
why I went to Sheila Heyman.”
“Chris came on board after we realized
we needed someone with technical expertise.
By combining their skills, (Heyman and Jordanek) make a good team.”
Sense of urgency
There’s a sense of urgency to the project
because the survivors are getting older, Charna
said. They range in age from mid-60s to late 80s.
“A lot of the survivors are dying off,"
Charna said. "One has passed away since we
did the interview.”
Partly because of that sense of urgency,
the project team is providing a copy of the
entire interview on DVD to each family,
Jordanek said.
“It’s the unedited, uncut version,” he said.
“We thought that was important.”
“Each full interview will also be on the
Web site, along with a biography of each
survivor,” Jordanek said.
“The purpose of the Web site is to provide resources for teachers and students to
learn about the Holocaust and the survivors,”
he said. “The film will be edited from more
than 20 hours of footage to about 45 minutes,” Jordanek said.
“Most of the interviews are done,” Eisenberg said. “We finished a good amount of the
interviews this year and (last) summer, editing
them into different sections,” he said. “We’re
focusing now on getting the script done and
will continue to work on editing this summer.”
Music performed by the BHS Orchestra will be featured in the film.
A model for others
The site of the premiere has not been
determined yet.
“We’d like to premiere it at the Cedar Lee
(Theatre in Cleveland Heights) or that type of
theater,” Charna said.
After the premiere, the students plan
to distribute the film to educational institutions around the world, including schools,
libraries and museums, Charna said. He
cited the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage,
in Beachwood, as an example.
“It’s a good educational resource,” he
said. “That applies not only to learning
about the Holocaust, but also to the concept
of students making the film,” Heyman said.
“It may be inspirational to high schools
that a group of students are doing this and
might inspire other schools to do a similar
project on another topic,” she said.
Markwardt believes the film will be a
model for other school districts.
“They’re putting together something that
will be worthy of state and national attention,”
he said. “I think when it’s done, we’ll have a
product of which we’re very proud.”

Beachwood High School Tennis Star Goldberg
Finishes Second at Division II State Tournament
Reprinted with permission from Sun News
State Runner Up in Tennis Singles, Mark Goldberg
Tennis players are like any other athlete
when it comes to superstition. If something
is working, they'll stay in the same routine,
eat the same foods, wear the same clothing.
The reverse is also true where any athlete or coach will change the way they will
sit or stand or find a different chair to sit in.
The biggest story of the Division II
state championships at the Stickney Center
at Ohio State University was not the final
between Mark Goldberg of Beachwood
and Joe Fritz of Cincinnati Country Day,
which Fritz won, 6-1, 6-2.
Instead, it was Goldberg’s semifinal
match with Ian Wagner of Columbus
Wellington School. It turned out to be a
thriller, with both sets won by the Bison
junior, 7-6, 7-6, via the tie-breaker route.
“This was the same court Mark had
lost on in the doubles championship last
year,” said Bison coach Gregg Goldberg,
Mark's father. “How strange is that?”
Indeed, the younger Goldberg and then
senior partner Grant Aronson faced Billy
Strunk and Omar Salama of Cincinnati
Indian Hill in a three-set battle. After winning the first set, 6-1, the Bison pair lost the
second, 6-4. The two teams battled to 6-6,
forcing a tie-breaker. The Indian Hill duo
won 8-6 for the title.
Fast forward to this year’s semifinal.
Goldberg wins the first tie-breaker 7-5 and
the second set 8-6, the very score he had
lost by the previous year.
“There are two benches on the court
and I sat on a different one than I did last
year,” the coach said. “It’s funny how Mark
and I noticed that right away.”
BMS Track Members Set New
State Records
Beachwood Middle School’s Brianna

new state records and were recognized as
the Middle School Track and Field State
Champions at the end of this school year.

The match was one of those rare times
everyone at the center could watch the finish.
The marathon match went 2½ hours.
“Everyone else was done with their
matches, so all eyes were on the court,”
Coach Goldberg said.
With only 45 minutes between the
semifinal and final, Goldberg had little
energy to face Fritz. Tired and exhausted
after the finals, Goldberg needed medical
attention with fluids pumped into him after
an ambulance arrived.
“This was not a case of Mark not being
hydrated properly. He just gave everything he
had on the court and had nothing left,” the
coach said. “Hey, there were kids from Beachwood who came down to watch the matches
and went home and took a nap. They were so
tired and they did not even play.”
“It was hot and it is always warmer on
the court than the temperature everyone
sees on the weather report.”
It was also a memorable day.
