UPDATE
Global Semiconductor Sales Grow Year-over-Year
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA)
announced on May 4, 2015 that worldwide
semiconductor sales reached $83.1 billion for
Q1 2015, a 6 percent increase over Q1 2014
totals. Global sales for March 2015 were $27.7
billion, 6 percent higher than the March 2014
total of $26.1 billion and 0.1 percent lower than
February 2015 totals.
“Despite macroeconomic challenges, first
quarter global semiconductor sales are higher
than they were last year, which was a record
year for semiconductor revenue,” said John
Neuffer, SIA president and CEO. “The Americas
region posted its sixth straight month of
double-digit, year-to-year growth to lead
all regional markets, and DRAM and analog
products continue to be key drivers of global
sales growth.”
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics
(WSTS) is forecasting moderate, yet steady,
growth for 2015 across all product categories
and regions, under the assumption of a
further macro economy recovery throughout
the entire forecast period. They project the
world semiconductor market to grow by 4.9
percent to $352 billion in 2015. Their growth
forecast for 2016 remains unchanged from
recent projections, at 3.1 percent to $363
billion.
and beyond. Research firm Gartner notes
that the digital revolution is being fueled
by consumers’ desires to connect faster
and less expensively with better products
and services at any time, in any place, on
any channel. Digital technology availability,
along with Generation Z obsession with the
IoT, is changing consumer expectations and
increasing the demand for an agile service
experience. The rapid evolution of social media
and mobile technologies is driving consumer
behavior – particularly with Gen Z, which grew
up expecting immediate, fast services at their
fingertips. Cloud services and the IoT are
proliferating at an unprecedented rate to meet
consumer demand and expected experience.
Gartner projects that the installed base of
the IoT will exceed 26 billion units worldwide
by 2020. They are estimating 15 billion
networked devices in 2015, an increase from 7
billion in 2010.

Strong market, long lead times
The biggest challenge in the discrete semiconductor market right now is the strength of the U.S. dollar. Suppliers
have adjusted their prices to account for this situation. Due to the strong market, longer lead times are expected—as
we are already seeing from several manufacturers. SOT323 and SOT223 packages from both ON Semiconductor
and NXP are on allocation with lead times as far out as 26 weeks. Vishay’s TVS diodes in SMA and SMB packages
are 18 – 2 weeks. ST Micro’s SMA- and SMB-packaged TVS diodes are also constrained with 14 – 16 week lead
times. NXP’s schottky diode lead times are extending, with SOT363 out to 16 weeks and SOT 323 now 30 weeks.
Lead times from ON Semi on their SMA and SMB rectifiers are running 20 weeks.

Growth remains steady
The microcontroller market continues to remain strong, though with no major fluctuations
in lead times or pricing trends. Growth is steady within the automotive segment with
applications including engine management, transmission, anti-lock braking, electric power
steering, active suspension, and advanced driver assistance systems—where they must
comply with most stringent automotive safety standards.
Acquisitions within the semiconductor market continue with NXP and Freescale merging
with a value of just over $40 billion. This creates a global powerhouse and market leader in

Memory
Increasing NAND demand
As is par for the course, the memory market had its usual fluctuations in
pricing and demand for much of 2015 thus far. Some of the softening in
the market during the first quarter may be attributed to the influence of
the Chinese New Year celebration mid-quarter. While the pricing trends
remained in a depressed state heading into Q2 2015, overall activity has
begun to rebound.
We are starting to see an increase in pricing in the x8 DDR3 series of
parts, as many manufacturers had slowed production to keep pace with
demand during the down streak. DRAM revenue is expected to increase
7.9 percent in 2015, following a 32 percent increase in 2014. Micron has stated that they are willing to lose market
share on DRAM. “Although we are taking steps to minimize the impact, our wafers produced will decline yearover-year. By the way I should note we do have clean room space available to replace or potentially add net
DRAM capacity if and when it makes sense from an ROIC standpoint but at this time we are not planning to make
that investment,” said D. Mark Durcan, chief executive officer at Micron Technology during the Q1 earnings call in
January 2015 (via SA Transcript).
Many manufacturers are turning their attention towards NAND flash as that market is in the midst of some
changes. But growth could be down in Q2 and Q3 as integration seems to be a concern with an increase in
controller and system compatibility issues. TLC-based NAND is also delaying the rise in 3D NAND as most
eMMC and SSD manufacturers are using that technology.
DRAMeXchange’s vice president, Sean Yang, stated the key factor to the turnaround in the NAND flash market
is the rising demands. From the first quarter to the initial half of the second quarter, the smartphone market was
weak due to seasonality and sagging domestic demand in China. This in turn negatively affected the NAND flash
market as well. “The situation will start to change now with the successive releases of new models by the global
smartphone vendors,” said Yang. “Memory makers are also shifting their capacities to meet the particularly huge
demand from Apple since iPhone and iPad both carry a lot of NAND flash.”

Long lead times for NXP
NXP is facing a demand-driven, front-end shortage with some lead times stretching beyond 30 weeks. NXP is not able
to narrow the constraints down to line item level or isolate the issues to specific packages or pin counts. Right now,
DIP, SOIC, SSOP, TSSOP and VQFN packages for all pin counts are running 22 – 32 weeks, depending on the device.
In addition, NXP is not able to narrow down to trends by function (i.e.: gates, flip/flops, buffers), but single gate (i.e.:
74HC1Gxxx, 74HC2Gxxx, 74HCT1Gxxx, 74HCT2Gxxx) is actually pushing even further out to the 30 – 36 week range.
This is also affecting the 16-bit (74LVC16xxx) and 32-bit (74LVC32xxx), while the FAST (N74Fxxx) family does not
appear affected.
As Texas Instruments offers crosses for all of these families, their lead times may start to move out as well.

Analog
Prices increasing, growth expected
As we progress through Q2 2015, analog product lead times have remained unchanged, however pricing has
taken a slightly upward trend. This year’s forecast for analog is positive with an estimated growth of 8 percent
driven by power management and amplifiers.
The analog market continues to change with more consolidation from mergers and acquisitions. Microchip
Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed signal, analog and flash solutions, announced on
May 7, 2015 that they have signed an agreement to acquire Micrel Inc. for $14.00 per share. Micrel’s portfolio of
linear, power management, LAN solutions, timing and communications products, as well as their strong position
in the industrial, automotive and communications markets, complements many of Microchips initiatives in these
areas. The acquisition is expected to close early Q3 2015.

[ An America II Special Report ]
Let’s Capitalize
on the
Internet of Things!
T
he buzz right now is all about the Internet of
Things (IoT). There have been reports, forecasts
and ongoing analysis about the future of smart
technology. But what does all of this mean to those
of us in the channel?
Late last year, IDC analysts said revenues tied
to the IoT could hit $7.1 trillion by the year 2020.
Gartner also forecasted that the IoT segment
of the semiconductor market would grow by 36
percent this year alone. That means growth for
the technologies that support IoT applications, like
microcontrollers, embedded processors, sensors,
memory, and battery management to name a few.
Furthermore, mid-tier customers should fuel
growth of IoT solutions for several reasons. For
those customers, there’s really no roadblocks to
entry. The technology exists today, so they have
a quick, low-cost point of entry. These customers
produce the products that represent a diverse
range of devices, all of which have the potential of
being “connected” over the next five years.
The great thing about the electronics industry
is the fact that technology is always evolving.
Companies are innovating and advancing every
day—companies like Apple who redefined the
smartphone, Philips and their smart light bulbs,
Nest Labs and their smart thermostat. These are
some of the players leading the charge. Home
appliances, security systems, wearable devices,
automotive, and energy management applications
are really just getting started. What’s next?
Analysts and researchers expect to see billions of
connected devices in the next 10 years. Imagine
a future where the internet becomes even more
engrained in our day-to-day lives. That’s the
potential for OEMs today. They’re just getting
started in planning the next wave of connected
devices, and it goes way beyond the types of device
most people envision.
There’s so potential for the IoT, and OEMs need
to think outside the box to capitalize on the
opportunity. The public sector is a great example,
where we see solutions like the Smart Grid. Entire
cities are deploying new infrastructure including
computer systems, networks and connected
devices to enhance the reliability and efficiency
of their public utilities. In addition, connected
solutions for traffic management, pollution
monitoring, and smart parking controls are already
being developed and used. The government is
finding that IoT solutions lead to cost savings,
improved employee productivity, and enhanced
services to citizens. With positive results such as
these, there’s no reason to see a slowdown in
connected devices.
All of this means more opportunities for OEMs.
Devices that are already being manufactured
and produced can easily evolve into connected
devices. It is just a matter of being open minded
and thinking beyond today’s applications. America
II is rolling up its sleeves, getting in front of
customers, and helping them find those solutions.
The potential is out there for everyone, and it will
be exciting to see what the future holds for our
industry.

Complex ICs
fluctuating demand, reduced growth expected
As we make our way towards the halfway point for 2015, we are seeing the market driven by
specific external forces that are influencing demand. The strengthened US dollar is raising prices
in Europe and parts of Asia to allow suppliers to keep their margins intact. This translates to a
slowdown in demand, though still with potential to increase revenues. The uncertain demand
flow and pushed-out orders in some regions is equating to reduced semiconductor growth so far
this year.
Taking a broader glance, continued IoT growth is expected to drive demand higher over the next
several years. As more and more devices are connected to the internet, conservative reports
estimate around 26 billion devices will be connected by 2020 with some estimates as high as
100 billion to 200 billion devices. Global investment in smart grid technology is forecast to grow
19 percent annually through 2018. And so far we have just scratched the surface of the IoT opportunity. According
to Intel, 85 percent of industrial end points are not yet connected.

Mergers and acquisitions are all the rage in 2015. With Avago’s acquisition of PLX Technology
now completed, procurement options for PLX product is very limited with only a handful of
suppliers willing and able to take lead time orders. Lead times for PLX are currently running
12 – 16 weeks. Lattice Semiconductor’s recent acquisition of Silicon Image has left uncertainty
with all things Silicon Image, from the pricing to the lead times and future supply chain options.
Lead times on Silicon Image product have extended out to 12+ weeks, with some devices stretching to 16+
weeks. Microsemi has agreed to acquire Vitesse, and this brings similar questions and concerns of the future
availability of Vitesse product. Much of Broadcom’s portfolio continues to run 16+ weeks, while Marvell’s
Ethernet switches and processors are still 18 – 22 weeks. Lead times for Future Technology Devices (FTD)
USB UART products have leveled back to a more typical 8 – 10 weeks. Semtech’s Gennum product line of
equalizers, serializers and timing generators are now running 8 – 12 weeks.
