Welcome to this special issue of 11th RF Integrated Circuit Technology Workshop! RF
Integrated Circuit Technology Workshop has become a major event for engineers and
researchers of RF integrated circuits and related areas in Korea. The workshop has
presented timely topics of interests satisfying intellectual curiosity of participants.
Organized by the RF Integrated Circuit Technology Research Society of the Institute of
Electronics Engineers of Korea (IEEK) and Korea University, the 11th workshop was held
at Jeju Ramada Hotel on September 22-24, 2011, with 30 technical presentations and 37
student research papers. The student papers were carefully reviewed by the technical program committee to
award top 6 papers with technical excellence. Among these prize winning papers, four papers were invited in
this special issue.
The 1st paper, “A 60-GHz LTCC SiP with Low-Power CMOS OOK Modulator and Demodulator” by
Chul Woo Byeon, Jae Jin Lee, Hong Yi Kim, In Sang Song, Seong Jun Cho, Ki Chan Eun, Chaejun Lee, and
Chul Soon Park, presents a 60 GHz LTCC SiP with low-power CMOS OOK modulator and demodulator
fully integrated in an LTCC SiP with 1 by 2 patch antennas, demonstrating 648 Mb/s wireless video
transmission at wireless distance of 20-cm. The 2nd paper, “A 3 ~ 5 GHz CMOS UWB Radar Chip for
Surveillance and Biometric Applications” by Seung Jun Lee, Jong Ok Ha, Seung Hwan Jung, Hyun Jin Yoo,
Young-Hoon Chun, Wan-Sik Kim, Noh Bok Lee, and Yun Seong Eo, introduces UWB radar chip
integrating both receiver and transmitter for 3-5 GHz signals. The 3rd paper, “A CMOS Outphasing
Transmitter Using Two Wideband Phase Modulators” by Sungho Lee, Kihyun Kim, Jaehoon Song, KangYoon Lee, and Sangwook Nam, presents CMOS outphasing transmitter using two wideband phase
modulators simplifying the overall outphasing transmitter architecture using two-point phase modulation in
the phase-locked loop. The last paper, “3-Gb/s 60-GHz Link With SiGe BiCMOS Receiver Front-End and
CMOS Mixed-Mode QPSK Demodulator” by Minsu Ko, Duho Kim, Holger Rücker, and Woo-Young Choi
demonstrates 3-Gb/s wireless link using a 60-GHz receiver front-end fabricated in 0.25-μm SiGe:C
BiCMOS and a mixed-mode quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) demodulator fabricated in 60-nm CMOS.
On publication of this special issue, I truly thank Professor Hong June Park, the Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Semiconductor Technology and Science, for his priceless help, and Professor Soo-Won Kim of
Korea University, the General Chair, and Dr. Hyun-Kyu Yu of ETRI, the Organizing Committee Chair of
the 11th Workshop, for their valuable efforts and assistants. I also thank all the Technical Program
Committee members, Organizing Committee members, contributing authors, and sponsors of 2011 RF
Integrated Circuit Technology Workshop for their hard work to make this special issue possible and to make
the workshop better each time.
