Stern Center for Language and Learning FY15 Annual Report A Message from the President What a remarkable year FY15 has been! Strategic planning for the future of our wonderful organization was punctuated by a $2 million endowment gift to the Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence. Although it remained challenging to meet service revenues and secure operations/ scholarship support, program grants thrived, particularly one championed by Boon Philanthropy to bring BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® to Head Start centers nationally. Let me share our FY15 sequence of activities. Last fall, at the midpoint of the 2020 Vision we developed in 2010, we began a strategic planning initiative not just to achieve the vision but to sustain the Stern Center long into the future. Following a thoughtful review process, we selected a planning consultant funded by a challenge grant inspired by Peter and Margie Stern. Together, we articulated our distinction as an educational leader providing multidisciplinary programs grounded in brain science and delivered with empathy. Another fall highlight was the sale of 135 Allen Brook Lane, the building we vacated three years ago. We not only saved $40,000 in annual carrying costs but also no longer have the concerns of managing an empty space with pending capital expenditures. Although the selling price was lower than we hoped, a mortgage of only $149,000 remains on our current building. Fall had barely turned to winter when we learned of an exceptional gift of $2 million to the Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence from the personal estate of its namesake, Cynthia K. Hoehl. Her kind generosity enabled the Institute’s Endowment to grow to $3 million from which a percentage of investment income provides grants to teachers and school teams for professional learning programs as well as underwriting for instruction to students with family incomes up to $125,000. As a result, more deserving students and teachers have access to Stern Center programs. The Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute has subsequently increased its impact on schools throughout the state. At year end, we had awarded $115,704 for customized professional learning programs in schools and $28,873 to students receiving academic instruction including communication services. The Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute thrives because of Cynthia’s passion for teachers as change agents for children’s learning success. As a result, major professional learning projects have developed with Mater Christi School, Orange North Supervisory Union, Orange Windsor/ Windsor Northwest Supervisory Union, and Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union. Administrators and teachers have collaborated with us to help All Children Read by Grade 3. Vermont has the chance to close both the achievement and opportunity gaps for learners. Other private donors with visions to improve education have also supported three major projects this year totaling $325,000: at one private school in Vermont, in one public school in Vermont, and through our national expansion of BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY®. These donors have dreams to help others realize their own. We are profoundly grateful to them. Extending BUILDING BLOCKS nationally through a partnership with the National Head Start Association has been a game changer in terms of enabling us to train trainers throughout the country to deliver BUILDING BLOCKS in their local Head Start centers for children birth through age five. We began training in Texas in June and one trainer already held her first training in Kentucky this summer. Others will train in FY16 as the project continues. We developed webinars to market the relationship between BUILDING BLOCKS and the Class Scoring Assessment System® (CLASS) used in Head Start. FY15 saw the revitalization of our Evaluation program with talented program managers and evaluators. In response to increased demand, we developed a mentorship program for summer evaluators, some of whom will return in FY16. Evaluations are a signature service for the Stern Center and epitomize our multidisciplinary, empathic approach to learning for all. Instruction programs extended beyond our on-site services in Williston and West Lebanon, NH to new partnerships with Woodside Juvenile Rehabilitation Center and the Greenwood School. Our Supplemental Educational Services grew with 126 students being seen in 23 schools. We also were pleased to begin instruction with student subjects for our neuroimaging research grant study with Dartmouth College through the National Science Foundation. Furthermore, we were delighted to resume our partnership with the University of Vermont College of Medicine by providing Executive Functioning classes to first year medical students. We were proud that our Communications Services program, which includes our highly regarded Social Thinking® offerings, reached the Upper Valley in FY15. Professional Learning opportunities in social learning also expanded with several new courses. What sets our Social Thinking® programs apart from traditional social skills training is that we teach students how to think social. Research received renewed focus this year with the establishment of a Board Research Committee. We are working on the priority research areas of assessing efficacy of BUILDING BLOCKS longitudinally and school/district wide professional learning collaboratives. FY15 culminated with a Board Retreat that yielded recommendations to management for strategic planning. These included honing our message for clarity and distinction, advancing technology organization wide, and extending our systems approach to literacy. Stay tuned! And check out our newly revised website in late fall, which also evolved in FY15. Each fiscal year feels like no other can ever compare. Surely FY15 had that feeling given all the good that was given and received. And yet, each year has its own style, challenges and successes. Thanks to all of you who made this year so memorable with special gratitude to Cynthia K. Hoehl. Her $2 million gift is an investment in the future of the Stern Center we all share on behalf of learners. Blanche Podhajski, Ph.D. Board of Directors Katie D. We received a consolidated Federal Grant from the Washington Central Supervisory Union to provide professional learning in literacy to the Orchard Valley Waldorf School. Fellowships were awarded to teachers to work at the Stern Center for four weeks, following completion of the Orton-Gillingham Associate Level course offered this June. This lab model benefited our students, who received reduced cost services, and their instructors who enjoyed ongoing coaching. 12 Champions for Children In May 2015, three Vermont women, Mary Burns, Director of the Burlington YMCA, Julie Cadwallader-Staub, Grant Director for the Early Learning Challenge—Race to the Top grant for the state of Vermont, and Blanche Podhajski, Founder and President of the Stern Center for Language and Learning, were honored by the Turrell Fund. Each was given the Turrell Champion Award. In addition to being named as a Turrell Champion, Dr. Podhajski was also invited to give a presentation to 100 people on 21st Century Learning, which encouraged activism from the audience relative to using brain science to drive effective practices for literacy from birth to adulthood. The Turrell Champion Award is given to individuals who demonstrate the furthering of the Turrell Fund vision, mission and values in important and lasting ways. There have only been five Champions named in the 12-year history of the recognition program. From left to right: Mary Van Vliet, Dr. Blanche Podhajski, Julie Cadwallader-Staub, Elizabeth W. Event brought together Vermont authors and book fans for an evening of fine conversation, wine, and generosity to support the Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence. Great Minds on the Spot: Improv for a Cause brought back to Vermont Steve Waltien, son of our late Board Chair Stevenson Waltien, for two evenings of comedy improv raising funds for our Annual Scholarship Program. This was our first year as a nonprofit partner with the Vermont City Marathon’s Miles for Mission. Stern Center team members ran to raise funds for our Annual Scholarship Program. For far too long I watched as my son struggled through school, frustrations mounting, his self-confidence fading. In the past year and a half that he has attended the Stern Center he has shown consistent improvement. He is reading at grade level, something he had never been able to master. He has improved in areas of fluency, decoding, and vocabulary. All of these strides have bolstered his confidence and calmed the feelings of frustration. Although I knew my son needed help, I thought that tutoring was out of the question. We simply could not afford it. Thanks to the generosity of others; tutoring for my son was made possible. I don’t think that mere words could ever express our gratitude. Simply saying thank you doesn’t seem to say enough to those people who have given so much to help my son reach his potential. - Parent Investing in Professional Development for Teachers: Enhancing the work of the CKHIE Three major projects supported by private donors: 14 • • • One private school in Vermont One public school in Vermont Our national expansion of BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® Scholarship Highlights Service Count Awarded Evaluation 22 $22,234.08 Communication Services 11 $12,664.35 Instruction 5 $4,365.00 Total Adult 38 $39,263.43 Evaluation 40 $39,212.29 Communication Services 26 $15,544.22 Instruction 79 $56,035.60 Total Child 145 $110,792.11 Grand Total 183 $150,055.54 FY15 Named Scholarships New FY15 Scholarships T.
