What does the position do?
The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) is governed by a board of commissioners.
The commissioners make final decisions on policies that affect all students receiving state
financial aid. The Commission has two seats designated specifically for students. One new
student commissioner is appointed to the Commission every year from one of the four
university segments and they serve a two-year term while also being a student. Both
student commissioners are afforded full voting rights for the duration of their two-year
term.
The student commissioners are crucial to CSAC, as they provide student perspectives as
they participate in decisions that directly affect students.
How do the Student Commissioners interact with CSSA?
The student commissioners interact closely with CSSA. They serve as liaisons to the CSSA
Board of Directors by providing regular updates and seeking perspectives on various issues
that the Commission is considering. In addition, CSSA staff are committed to supporting
the CSU student appointed to the Commission through regular communication, regular
attendance at CSAC board meetings, and providing general guidance as needed.
What does the time commitment look like?
Commissioners are expected to be present at CSAC meetings, which are 2-day meetings
held bi-monthly at the CSAC headquarters in Rancho Cordova, CA. The 2016 CSAC meeting

Will I have time for a regular job and my school work?
While the position is certainly a time commitment, diligent students have been successful
and effective in the position while also maintaining their commitment to academics and
personal life.
Is the position paid?
The CSAC student commissioners are not paid employees. They are provided a $100 daily
stipend for each day they serve in their official capacity. Additionally, all pre-approved
travel and business expenses are covered.
APPLYING FOR THE POSITION
Who can apply?
Any student, undergraduate or graduate, of a California State University that has at least
two academic years remaining, is in good academic standing with a least a 2.0 GPA, and
can serve the full term between June 1, 2016 and June 1, 2018, is able to apply.
What does the application process look like?
1. CSSA Application
The CSSA application consists of brief questionnaire, essay questions, and a resume. The

All items are due by the May 2, 2016 deadline.
2. Recommendation
Following a review of applicants by the CSSA Internal Review Board (IRB), a few select
finalists will be recommended by CSSA to the Governor of California. The prospective
candidate(s) will be invited to an interview by the Governor’s Appointments Secretary.
3. Appointment
The candidate will be appointed to the position by the Governor of California and will
work the Appointments Secretary to complete their installation.
What kind of experience should I have?
Students do not need to have extensive experience related to the position but should
demonstrate leadership and have a strong knowledge of student and financial aid issues.
