THE LITTLE ANGELS OF THE ENVIRONMENT CAMEROON STORMS THREE
DIVISIONS IN THE NORTH WEST REGION FOR THE PLANT FOR THE PLANET
PLANTING EXERCISE - AT THE RESSURECTION GARDEN OF THE HOLY
UNION SISTERS GARDEN NDOP, -THE SABOGA PARK BAFUT AND THE
GOLDEN JUBILEE SPACE IN ST BEDES COLLEGE ASHNG KOM.
The Little Angels of the Environment Cameroon (LANEC), an organisation that
embraces children and youth ages 8 to 24 years interested and conscious of the need to redress
burning environmental issues carried out environmental sensitization activities, as a means to
curb environmental hazards. The activities that took place in some sites of the North West
Region from the 26-29 July 2012, was an outreach programme in line with the
UNEP/TUNZA Program with children and for children/Youth, the Plant for the Planet
Initiative, and the Earth Child Institute. The purpose of the sensitization campaign was to
instil the notion of environmental consciousness in the minds of their peers as well as the
general public.
In the course of the exercise the notion of a “Green Economy” notion, was highlighted
in some of the key presentations that were done by the children themselves. Exciting
experiences from the last 3 International children’s Conferences on the environment tht took
place from 2011-2012 in South Africa, Indonesia and Brazil were shared by those who
represented Cameroon.
The three divisions of the North West Region that benefited from this years summer holiday
outreach programme included; Boyo, Ngohketunjia, and Mezam.
• There was Planting of ornamental plants in the Golden Jubilee Space, this is in
prelude to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of St Bedes College Ashing slated for
2013, as the children sensitized the local youth on the importance of what they are
engaged in, the local youths listened attentively, this was in the presence of the highest
authority of the Catholic Church in that Region. His Grace Cornelius Fontem Esua
who was present to grace the event, in his word of encouragement to the youth he
called on them to be conscious of their Environment, and to do whatever they are out
to do with conviction, he was very delighted to know that the children are so
conscious of their environment at an earlier stage, and called on the young
Ambassadors of the Environment to carry out their engagements in good faith,
knowing that a healthy environment is a Godly Environment
.
• At the Garden in the premises of the Holy Union Convent called the “Resurrection
Garden” Ndop, the curious children and youth walked by the poles representing the
Stations of the Cross, this took them to the 15th station which is the resurrection, there
the Rev sisters made them understand that each plant in the garden is in memory of a
loved one, making them reflect on the Love of Jesus. The 50 kids demonstrated their
love for our Saviour and loved one, by planting each at least a plant in the resurrection
garden to commemorate the dead of Jesus and a loved one.

The Caravan to the North West Region, dubbed “LANEC for a Green Economy”,
took the Angels to some sites namely the Ndawara Tea Estate/Range, UNVDA Rice
Processing site and Saboga Garden Bafut where they found out the scientific names of
some of the plants in that Garden, in each of the sites the group had a specific message
to put across. The activities culminated with a cultural evening where amongst the so
many exiting displays, the children initiated a “Green Cake Commitment” the
evening that witnessed the presence of the Hon. Yoyo, Mrs Fultang MaryBenadette as
co- chair. Dr. Melo Ufei, Justice Galega Prudence, Original Pa Jean Jeanot crowned
as the Mothers and Patrons of the Little Angels, these and many other personalities
supported the children’s initiatives in a special way.
It should be recalled that the Little Angels of the Environment Cameroon, have for the
past years been actively involved in Environmental Protection initiatives, the activity was
carried out as a step towards implementing the Rio + 20 Outcomes, done under the watchful
eyes of the Ministry of Environment Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development,
represented by the MINEPDED Youth National Coordinator Mme Yappele Lydia, with the
technical support of the North West Regional Delegation for Environment.
The LANEC National Coordinator Auntie Priscilla Song, and the Project Officer
Auntie Ita Ndifor facilitated the process, and disclosed at the end that the number of trees
that LANEC has so far planted stands at 6000 plants planted since 2008 in some 4 regions.
