nuclear programs of the 1950's and continuing to develop sophisticated techniques and engineering
methods to confine, contain and control hazardous contaminants.
Engineering Controls…
Engineering Controls are defined as devices, systems and/or controls that will preclude the
release of a hazardous material or substance to the workplace or environment, thereby
protecting the worker and the population in general from a hazardous exposure. Engineered
Controls are designed to integrate or complement a work process or operation, such that the
controls function without inhibiting the work process and may enhance the work process when
compared to utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE).
...inherently make the workplace safer by incorporating protective systems into the
work process.
One significant engineered control is portable air filtration systems. When used properly, air cleaning
systems effectively control contamination at its source, eliminate the spread of contaminants and
minimize exposure of personnel while increasing safety and efficiency.
Our modular panel containment systems (Perma-Con®) offer fast erection, a reusable design and are
the industry standard for remediation and decontamination & decommissioning projects. Our personnel
protection products include custom hoods, workstations and decontamination systems and other
products designed to protect the worker and the environment.
Our complete line of hardware products is designed to improve working in radiological and hazardous
environments. RPS' engineered controls offer a safe and cost-effective way to minimize exposure,
improve worker and workplace efficiency, and protect the environment.

PRESSURE CONTROL UNIT
P/N C102604
The Pressure Control Unit (PCU) is a Type 304 stainless steel portable HEPA ventilation unit designed to
maintain a positive or negative pressure in a flexible or hard sided enclosure. The filter housings are spun
aluminum. The PCU is available with a touchscreen Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and pressure
monitoring system, or with a manual On/Off/Speed control.
PLC Automatic Control
One way to control pressure is to utilize the PLC “feedback” loop that
automatically adjusts fan speed to maintain a preset containment
pressure (positive or negative). The other method is to manually set the
fan speed to the desired enclosure pressure and manually adjust the
speed while the PCU is operating. Depending upon the installed
configuration, the blower will either add or exhaust HEPA filtered air from
the enclosure until the pressure inside of the enclosure stabilizes at the
preset value. Should there be a containment breach, the PCU will
attempt to maintain the preset pressure point. The PCU is a highly
recommended alternative to the use of HEPA vacuum cleaners as
ventilation equipment. Vacuum cleaners can cause damage to flexible
isolators due to their powerful suction collapsing or tearing the fabric.
HEPA Filter Options
The PCU can be equipped with a HEPA filter on both the supply and exhaust sides of the blower. It can be
operated with either one or two filters installed. The HEPA filters can be installed on the upstream side,
the downstream side, or for added protection, double HEPA’s can be installed on both ends. This dual
filter configuration allows the PCU to operate in either a positive pressure or a negative pressure mode.
With new filters, it is capable of moving 150 cfm with one filter installed, or 110 cfm with both filters
installed. Interlocks prevent operation with the filter(s) removed or not properly seated. The PCU is
capable of passing a filter penetration test with a new filter installed yielding a 99.95% efficiency @ 0.3
micron level. It is ducted using a 3” diameter connection on both the supply and exhaust nipple
connections which are located on the filter housings.
Alarm Options
The PCU has the option of being used with a local or remotely located
audible and/or visual alarm. The values of duration and deviation can be
adjusted by the user to suit their needs. The alarm is triggered when the
desired pressure misses the actual internal pressure for more than a preset
time period, indicating a significant containment breach, loaded filters or
other non-desired conditions. The alarm is silenced by either pressing an
“acknowledged” button on the PCU’s touch screen or when the desired
pressure matches the actual internal pressure.
Features
 Adjustable flow from 0 to 150 CFM under normal operating conditions.
 Flow rate up to 175 CFM in breach conditions.
 Disposable 10” dia. X 12.25” (including nipple connection) HEPA filter on exhaust and/or supply side.

Carbon Adsorbers
What is Adsorption?
Adsorption is a process that occurs when a gas or liquid solute accumulates on the surface of a solid,
forming a molecular or atomic film (the adsorbate). The carbon utilized for radioactive iodine removal is
nuclear grade 8x16 mesh and is impregnated with TEDA to improve retention of radio-iodines. RPS offers
adsorbers in both circular and square cross-sections.
NUTOX Carbon Adsorbers are designed for the capture of organic vapors and fumes. They employ a high
carbon contact time. NUTOX uses technical grade activated carbon and is not rated for nuclear (radioiodine) applications. The NUTOX Radial Flow Adsorbers treat relatively large flows with a very low
pressure drop. The activated carbon is contained in an annulus between two stainless steel screens
attached to expanded metal. When an accumulator cabinet is used to house the radial flow adsorber,
condensate drains and breakthrough indicators are provided. If conditions dictate, stainless steel can be
substituted for carbon steel or an alternative coating can be provided. Flow can be reversed if preferred.
NOTES:
1) Nominal design flow may be conservative. Desired contact time may allow higher or lower flow rates.
2) Dry virgin activated or reactivated carbon provided as standard adsorbent.
3) Maximum adsorbent fill is based on a bed density of 29 lb/ft3.
4) Maximum adsorbent fill can differ based on variable bed density and alternate adsorbents.

The air flow rate indicator provides a convenient
way to determine actual Cubic Feet per Minute
(CFM) flow rate of air flowing through an air duct
or hose.
We have models equipped with flex duct/hose
collars on the inlet and outlet, they are available in
6", 8", 10" and 12" Dia. An optional adapter will
allow direct mounting of the unit to the inlet collars
of RPS HEPA filtration units.
Flow Rate is read directly on the gage display in CFM. Indicated flow rate accuracy can vary from as little

Maskleen System
RPS offers a variety of safety related products for portable personnel protection.
In addition, we provide products to support regular maintenance and upkeep of PPE devices.
Maskleen Respirator Washer
P/N EK03
The RCM-501 washer, is capable of washing and sanitizing six
full face or twelve half face mask respirators in one machine
cycle, up to a maximum of 180 respirators per hour.
The respirators are loaded into the washer in a 20" x 20" x 6"
rack (P/N FB01). The rack is also used to hold the respirators
during the drying operation in the model RCM-502 Maskleen
Respirator Dryer.
A loaded rack of respirators is placed in the washer which
contains two gallons of 120°F water. The automatic cycle is
initiated when the washer door is closed.
Masklenze detergent (P/N HH01) and disinfectant (Clorox™ bleach) are injected by adjustable positive
displacement peristaltic pumps into the wash water and the respirators are exposed to a high pressure
spray by moving spray nozzles located above and below them. The wash cycle exposes the respirators to
an equivalent of 63 gallons of water per minute of wash, as selected on the PLC Controller. The wash
water is drained and the washer sump and pump are flushed with clean water. The washer refills with 2
gallons of water and a power rinse is initiated. The rinse exposes the respirators to an equivalent of 21
gallons of clean water. This completes the disinfectant wash/clean rinse cycle and the respirator racks
are removed from the washer. The "rinse" water in the washer sump is retained in the machine and
utilized as the "wash water" for the next cycle, thus greatly reducing water consumption.
The variable wash time cycle (40 sec. - 180 sec.) allows the operator to adjust the wash portion of the
cycle while retaining the automatic cycling of the washer. The washer is equipped with 3 pumps (1
spare). A safety switch stops operation of the washer any time the door is opened. All machine functions
controlled by an on-board Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). These functions are displayed and
programmed through a touch screen display/interface.
Respirator washing capacity per hour:
2 minute wash cycle: half mask 180/hr; full mask 90/hr.
Up to 10 minute wash cycle: half mask 60/hr; full mask 30/hr.

heater element and returned to the drying chamber. 70 CFM air is
exhausted from the dryer to remove moisture with room ambient
supplying makeup air. An optional 4" flexible duct adapter is
available for exhausting dryer to an exhaust ventilation system.
The dryer has a 1500 watt heater that is automatically controlled by the indicating adjustable controller.
Temperature is operator selectable, but is normally set at 120°F (or respirator manufacturers
recommended drying temperature). High-limit heater shutdown is initiated at 140°F by a separate highlimit switch.
Dryer time for two full racks of respirators averages 30 minutes if residual wash water is vacuumed from
respirators prior to drying. A 0-60 minute adjustable timer switch provides on-off and timing functions for
the dryer. The unit is designed to be mounted on top of the RCM-501 washer or may be placed on a table
top.
Drying capacity per hour: 48 half face respirators or 24 full face respirators.

into the hood, over the drum top. A screen and prefilter
installed in the hood arrest material or particles that
enter the MAC-21D inlet plenum.
In operation, the MAC -21D with the Drum Hood is
positioned over the drum. A large poly bag is taped to
the front of the drum. The unit is started and the drum
lid retainer and drum lid (or bung) is removed and
slipped into the poly bag. After inspection or sampling,
the lid is slipped from the poly bag and placed back
into the drum and secured.

P/N GU17P
Options: Adjustable height frame legs.
This mobile capture velocity drum hood facilitates the opening and
inspection of 55 gallon drums. The hood incorporates a clear viewing
section that extends completely over the drum top, or may be
retracted to about 1/2 of the drum top diameter, to facilitate access
to drum bungs or inspection of drum contents.
Air flow from a separate HEPA filtration unit (SP-700 for example) is
drawn into the hood, over the drum top at a capture velocity of about
100-170 FPM. A screen and prefilter installed in the Model GU17P
hood, arrests materials or particles that enter the inlet plenum, prior
to exiting the hood, and reduces contamination of the flex duct
connecting it to the HEPA exhaust unit.
In operation, the Drum Hood is positioned over the drum, and the
HEPA filtration unit is turned on. A large poly bag is taped to the front
of the drum. The drum lid retainer and drum lid (or bung) is removed
and slipped into the poly bag. After inspection or sampling, the lid is
slipped from the poly bag and placed back into the drum and
secured.
P/N C101836
Options: Adjustable height frame legs and drum adapters.
Drum adapters and adjustable height allow one hood to
accommodate 55, 85 & 110 gallon standard drum sizes. Fast
height adjustment is possible with a hand crank. An exhaust
prefilter is installed in the hood. A telescopic clear hood
extension allows access to the contents of the drum. An 8” flex
duct connection requires a minimum 700 cfm exhaust air flow.
RPS recommends our SP-1000LV, P/N FM48 portable HEPA
filtration unit for use with this drum hood.

Reactor Vessel
Underhead Shield
The Reactor Vessel Underhead Shield is designed to
reduce radiation exposure from the underside of the
reactor vessel head while on the head stand. It is
positioned before the head is placed on the stand
and extends up into the cavity of the head.
The shield consists of nine support frame sections
which will support up to three layers of Lead Wool
Blankets. The shield support structure includes an
extending shield plate on the top of the support
frame that is retracted and latched until the head is on the stand. It is then moved outward into close
proximity of the head. The extending shield has a series of bumper pads to protect the head. This
reduces exposure during work evolutions close to the head such as O-ring maintenance.
The height of the shield allows for inspection of the dryer hold down lugs. A lockable shielded door is
provided for underhead access. A vertical adjustable security barrier is located at the bottom of each
shield support section. The barrier is lowered to reach the floor to complete the security barrier and meet
the requirements of a “Locked High Radiation Area”. The underhead shield has a series of height
adjustable O-ring supports to aid in O-ring maintenance/replacement.
The underhead shield can be lifted and moved from one head stand location to another. Once it is located
in the appropriate position, the vertical adjustable security barrier is lowered to the floor and the
appropriate layers of blankets installed. The head is then placed on the head stand. The extending shield
plates are positioned close to the head.
Reactor Vessel
Head Stand Shield Ring
The Reactor Vessel Head Stand Shield Ring offers
simplified erection and is used outside the Reactor
Head Flange.
Featuring epoxy coated steel plate construction, it
can be sized to suit specific reactor vessel head
diameter. The standard unit is constructed of 4”
plate, with other thicknesses available. The ring
provides for the use of interchangeable components
as well as providing access for robots and personnel through three shielded doors. Ventilation ports are
also provided for engineering controls. A lockable latch at the access point door creates a locked high rad
area. A base plate is provided to distribute the load, and lifting provisions are provided for the overhead
crane.
NOTE: Reactor Vessel Underhead Shield System shown is for BWRs (boiling water).
Also available, systems for PWRs (pressurized water).

Project History
Davis Besse Alloy 600 Mitigation Shielded Work Platform
Radiation Protection Systems (RPS) designed
and delivered a shield package for weld
inspections and repairs on a pressurized water
reactor's (PWR) core flood nozzles (CF) and
reactor interfaces. The shield package was
designed to allow some work while the in core
detectors were in the removed position. The
weld inspections/repairs were part of the
station’s Alloy 600 Mitigation Program.
Work was performed on the pipe-to-vessel
connection adjacent to the reactor, and on
both CF nozzles using an industry-first
innovative approach. This work required
access to the annulus between the reactor
vessel and reactor cavity. This access was
obtained by cutting and removing a portion of
the reactor cavity’s concrete wall (bioshield) adjacent to the CF piping. A shielded work platform was
required to allow entry into the annulus space to install and monitor the welding equipment and to
perform required weld repairs. The work platform was constructed so that it could be easily
disassembled for transport to the work site, and quickly and easily re-assembled within the annulus.
The shielded work platform approach was advantageous for multiple reasons. First, the work platform
was able to be installed from outside the reactor cavity, through the wall cut, thus reducing the exposure
associated with manned entries into the cavity for
installation. Secondly, the shielding package was relatively small
compared to other potential designs, allowing the simplification of
rigging while minimizing the risk of dropped components by designing
and incorporating safeguards into the various work platform
components.
Although actual dose rates were approximately five (5) times the
expected/planned dose rates resulting in greater total personnel
exposure than planned, the shield package was still considered a
success by station senior management as significant dose savings
were achieved by using the shield package. Additionally, all required
work was performed safely and all alloy 600 regulatory commitments
were satisfied requiring no future inspections (based on current
regulatory guidance) of the core flood nozzle welds.

Maintenance Program Outline
Phase 1: Evaluation of Equipment Inventory
An RPS technical representative will evaluate your HEPA equipment inventory to determine the
scope of work required to return it to its optimum operating condition. Deliverable - a report
documenting equipment condition and cost estimates for repair.
Phase 2: HEPA Equipment Maintenance
An RPS technical representative will order the required repair and replacement equipment, effect
the repairs at your facility, operationally test the equipment, document challenge media (DOP)
testing, and provide a report that will baseline the maintenance history for each unit of HEPA
equipment.
Phase 3: Program and Procedure Review
RPS will review your engineered controls program and procedures as they relate to the use of
ventilation equipment, and suggest changes necessary to meet RPS recommendations and
industry standards.
Phase 4: Practical Engineering Controls Training
Application of Engineering Controls has been proven to be the most cost effective method to
control the spread of contamination. Your technical staff needs to be properly trained in these
concepts and methods, and their correct application to optimize your program.

“Use of Engineering and Administrative Controls to reduce the potential for internal exposure should be evaluated before allowing
personnel, with or without respiratory protection, to enter areas with airborne radioactivity.”
“Tasks with the potential to exceed trigger levels shall undergo a formal, documented, radiological, or ALARA review. At a
minimum, this review should consider the following: Use of Engineered Controls to minimize the spread of contamination and
generation of airborne radioactivity.”
“Engineering Controls, including containment of radioactive materials at the source whenever practical should be the primary
method of minimizing airborne radioactivity and internal exposure to workers.”
