PREREQUISITES:
TEXT:
Math 2 (calculus), Physics 8A
(completed with a “C” grade or higher)
Young and Friedman, University Physics
updated Technology edition.
[13rd ed ©2014, Addison-Wesley Publ.
with “Mastering Physics”]
----------------------------------------------------------------ATTENDENCE: Showing up at all classes is a college requirement (you can be dropped for
missing 2 classes). Role will be taken and attendance may influence your grade.
GRADES:
Approximate weighting: Two Midterms (25%), Three Quizzes (15%) (lowest
one dropped), . Comprehensive Final (25%), Homework-Activities (15%), and Lab (20%).
Missing multiple lab activities could lower your grade by up to one full grade point. To avoid a
“D” in the course your average exam performance will need to be better than 25 to 30%.
EXAMS:
Your lowest quiz score will be dropped (which allows for one absence). You
are required to attend the midterms and the final. Make up exams will not be given except for
college accepted reasons (e.g. death in family, documented illness). There will be some
example questions handed out before each exam. Any cheating on exams will automatically
result with a “zero” score, and result in referral to the student discipline office.
HOMEWORK:
There will be regularly assigned homework problems. Its important for you to
spend time on them, even if you don’t get it all correct. I’ll be grading half for effort. Most of
homework will use “Mastering Physics”, but some will be “old fashion” pencil on paper.
 Mastering Physics: login at www.masteringphysics.com
 Course: " LPC Physics 8C Spring 2015 Pezzaglia”
 Course ID “MPPEZZAGLIA21877”
 You will an “access code”, which came with your book, or buy online.
WEB: All material (handouts) and some additional useful links are at my own website. You
should check it regularly for announcements and downloading lecture supplements and
handouts.
 Login needed for some parts, Login as “student”, password: “newton9”
In particular, download the PowerPoint Slides for the lecture, and other materials.
BLACKBOARD: Each student should have access to the Blackboard for this course.
However, there is some problem and I don’t have the necessary access to manage the account,
so until this is fixed, you should go to the above website for all materials.
LAB: Fridays 8:30-11:20 pm in 1831. A separate lab syllabus will be given at that time.

Lab Meeting #1 (Jan 23), will tentatively be “Elasticity”

