COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
(*)Neurological Physiotherapy for Adults and Children (5 cr)
Aims of the course:
You know how the most common neurological diseases (stroke, MS, Parkinson
disease, spinal cord injuries, muscle diseases, CP and ALS) effect on functioning,
moving and well-being.
You know how to apply physiotherapy methods conveniently and customerorientated with neurological clients.
You know the principles of the task-orientated physiotherapy and how to apply it
with neurological clients.
You know how to apply the principles of the motor learning with neurological clients.
You know how to evaluate, recognize and follow up the strengths/possibilities and
restrictions of the neurological clients in the framework of ICF.
You can plan the physiotherapy process in co-operation with the client, relatives or
other caregivers.
You know how to carry out the neurological physiotherapy process from the acute to
chronic phase.
You understand the multi-professional cooperation in the rehabilitation of the
neurological client.
You can inform, guide and support the neurological client and his/her relatives to
promote and maintain functioning, self-care and self-directed exercise. You`ll be able
to plan the further rehabilitation.
You know the basics of the childrens’ physiotherapy and you can carry out childrens’
physiotherapy customer-orientated and safe.

Having completed the study unit student is able to

understand the changing relations of public, private and third sector in social and
health care services

recognize examples of low threshold services of NGO´s locally and nationally

find low threshold or third sector services for chosen client groups

Course descriptions:
Social Services and Health Care in Finland:
Course opens the Social services and Health Care system in Finland. Students have tasks,
work in groups with other students. Students go to clinical area and meet the health care
and social welfare work professionals. Course is diversed learning partly in weblearning
environment.
Client Centered Gerontological Nursing: Identify gerontological nursing basic principles
and working with the older individuals
 are able to respectfully work with the older individuals and apply knowledge in
ageing
 know the methods used for assessing the functional ability of the older individual
 recognize the ethical principles of gerontological nursing and the characteristics of
encountering older individuals
 understand the significance of nursing promoting health and functional ability for
the care of the older individual
Nursing in International Fields:
 Identifies social, political, cultural and economic factors in delivering care during and
after
 disasters
 Understand the basic needs of humans in disasters and crisis hit zones and disaster
management
 Is able to plan and promote health for different cultural groups using international
health promotion strategies
Evidence Based Nursing Science
You will learn the basics of Nursing Science and Evident Based Nursing. You will participate
in the lecturers of the main issues and at the end to a seminar, search data based on evidence,
work on groups, do individual work etc.
Client Centered Medical and Surgical Nursing
Student will participate to lectures, skills labs and simulations with Bachelor Nursing
students. Students will do written tasks and group work including learning diary.
Orientation to the Finnish Language and Culture: Basics of Finnish language and
familiarizing oneself to the Finnish Culture.
