A Message from Our Chief Executive Officer It is with great pleasure that I celebrate the milestone of Leviton’s centennial anniversary with you. As valued employees of the Leviton Manufacturing Company and members of the Leviton “family,” I invite you to commemorate this auspicious event and participate with us in a retrospective of our shared history. Over the years I have seen the small company my father started in Manhattan in 1906 evolve into an international giant with operations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and China. Our product and service offerings have grown significantly over the years as we expanded our wiring device and wire and cable businesses and added new offerings such as lighting controls, voice and data and structured cabling products. So much has changed since Leviton first opened its doors for business, and yet some things have stayed the same. Our core values, our dedication to quality, service, and putting people first are every bit as important today as they were when my father first started the business a century ago. We remain committed to providing all Leviton employees with a workplace that encourages equality of opportunity and offers a corporate culture that inspires your personal and professional development. You have paid us back many times over with your loyalty, creativity, dedication and hard work. Together, we have grown into the largest family-owned and operated wiring device company in North America. As we build on our past success and shape our dynamic future, we look to you to continue Leviton’s legacy of innovation in a rapidly changing industry. Harold Leviton CEO and Chairman of the Board Leviton Manufacturing Company A Message from Our President The Leviton Manufacturing Company first opened its doors during a time of seemingly unlimited possibilities in America. The Wright brothers had just conquered the air, Ransom Olds and Henry Ford were introducing Americans to the joys of motoring, and Edison’s new tungsten-filament light bulb was making electrical lighting practical. One hundred years of incredible technological growth and change have followed. As we proudly celebrate our centennial anniversary, we take special note of the employees who have helped Leviton grow from a small startup company into North America’s leading wiring device manufacturer. Your talent, skills, and dedication have made our company a lasting and commanding presence in the electrical industry. We thank you for your hard work and dedication. They have played a huge role in our success. We’ve come a long way together. As Leviton enters its second century of business, we pledge to lead the industry and seek out new opportunities for growth. Most of all, we will strive to build on the company’s legacy of success, advance the careers of our employees, and change our world for the better. Donald J. When I expressed my gratitude, Isidor flung an arm around my shoulder and said, ‘Tony, you’re part of my family – of course I’d help you.’ My son is now a grown man with two children of his own.” “Why would anybody be interested in my life?” Isidor Leviton asked, while being interviewed by a reporter from the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper in 1953. “I’m a simple man: I’m not glamorous; I have no hobbies. I like to work – that’s all.” With characteristic plainspoken modesty IL played down the exceptional facts of his story — that after arriving in New York City as an immigrant youth, he managed to turn the Leviton Manufacturing Company from a small start-up business into an industry leader. And while he never had a taste for high society or stamp collecting, IL did have an avocation, of a sort: he generously donated his time and money to a number of different philanthropic causes, and was a member and one-time president of the board of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. Getting Things Done Modesty aside, IL had many qualities that contributed to his success. For one thing, he was resourceful; he knew how to get things done. In the early days of the company, he was having trouble finding qualified workers for the business. His solution was to go right to the source: the exit doors at Ellis Island. Passing out his Quotes from our family I retired from Leviton after 31 plus years of service. In my time, I have known people at Leviton who retired with 50 and more years of service. To me, this is representative of the loyalty between the Leviton family and company and its employees to each other. This is a rarity in today's business world. — George Goldman Former Production Control Manager, Little Neck 8 • In the Beginning card to arriving immigrants, he quickly assembled a talented group of tradesmen and solved his labor shortage. He was also an excellent judge of character. As his son Harold recalled: “My father’s skill at judging people was unbelievable. When a new foreman was hired, he would be escorted into the office and IL would spend exactly two minutes with him. He would say, ‘this guy will last six months,’ or ‘this guy will last two decades.’ And bingo, 99 times out of 100 he’d be right. I asked him ‘How do you do that’ and he’d say, ‘I just feel it; there’s no way I can tell you how to do it.” Many stayed on to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and sometimes even their 50th, with Leviton. Leviton employees frequently remarked on the level of personal interest IL took in their well-being and that of their families. Tony Scarangella, a long-time employee in the Brooklyn plant, remembered years Leviton’s Founding Father, Isidor Leviton The man who was so generous with his employees arrived in 1904 at Ellis Island in New York with his father and brother and not much else. His first job was running errands in a button factory for $2 a week. When the factory moved two years later, IL applied for a job as a trolley car operator, but, at 5'5", came up two inches too short to pass the minimum height requirement. But for those two inches, IL, and the thousands of people who have worked for Leviton over the years, might have led a very different life. Instead of working the controls of a trolley, IL wound up holding the reins at Leviton as he negotiated the twists and turns during the exciting early days of the electrical industry. IL steered the company towards a successful future by purchasing supplies in large quantities, mass-producing devices and their component parts and engineering better products that always led the field in technology. Under his stewardship, the company always anticipated the demands of the evolving electrical industry. The Big Picture IL was always looking to add new businesses to the Leviton family of companies. From 1937 to 1950, Leviton Celebration acquired American Insulated Wire, Acorn Wire and Cable, Deal Electric, and Hale Brothers, greatly increasing production capacity and providing many new products not previously manufactured by Leviton, especially wire, cable, and cord products. One of IL’s more innovative ideas was building a dedicated testing laboratory right at the Brooklyn plant. Since most products needed approval from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) to establish their safety, IL decided in 1938 to streamline the process by testing Leviton products on site. It proved to be a real time saver. After checking out the lab, UL not only approved the testing system; they asked if they could adapt it for their own use. That same year, IL’s first-born son, Bernard, entered the business. After starting out in the Personnel Department, he worked in Quality Control and Production Cost and Design, eventually becoming Vice President of Manufacturing. IL’s other son, Harold, joined the company in 1940, and was soon active in the Personnel and Purchasing Departments. IL continued at the helm of Leviton until his passing in 1965; Bernard’s untimely death brought Harold to center stage as President and CEO, marking the first change in command of the company in almost 60 years. Jack Amsterdam, married to IL’s daughter Mimi, was appointed Chairman of the Board. Looking Back … And Ahead 41 years have rushed by since then. As I grew up, I often visited the plant and became very friendly with the employees,” Leviton said some years back. The familiarity with staff and facilities was a fitting preview of things to come. The combination of a less-centralized corporate structure, increased employee participation in decision-making and rapidly changing technology set the stage for the unprecedented growth of Leviton through the electronic age of the 1960s-70s, into the digital era of today. The Sales and Engineering departments were reorganized and enlarged, Research and Development was expanded, and Marketing started to play a bigger role in company strategy. With the unfortunate passing in 1963 of his older brother Bernard, Leviton’s Vice President, and the death of IL two years later, HL found himself suddenly heading up Leviton as President and CEO. One even featured Pittsburg Steelers star running back Franco Harris endorsing the Spec-Master industrial product line. The company also began participating in an increasing number of industry associations, events, conferences and tradeshows. Top Sellers, Big Changes Under HL’s reign, Leviton introduced some of its most important products to date. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacle which Leviton first offered in 1972, was so effective in preventing ground fault shock that it is estimated to have saved hundreds of lives since its introduction. GFCIs are now mandatory in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas of homes and commercial buildings and Leviton keeps refining its GFCI offering to raise the bar for safety. One year later, the Decora® line of designer-styled wiring devices was unveiled to become an unprecedented success; it remains a top-seller to this day. Other markets that had been off Leviton’s radar began receiving attention. Wiring devices and cable for industrial and commercial applications now became a substantial source of revenue for Leviton. To meet the exploding demand for products, new factories were opened across the US, in Mexico and Canada. A super-efficient national warehouse network was put in place to assure product availability and speedy delivery. In 1975, Leviton moved the company headquarters from the Brooklyn plant to a new facility in Little Neck, Queens. The physical closeness of the Brooklyn plant, where people where clustered in cubbyholes, could no longer accommodate the corporate headquarters. In Little Neck, there was room for the company’s new computer center as well as other new departments. The Next Hundred Years Leviton, the company that HL led so effectively for more than 40 years, now has more than 30 facilities around the world, and leads the industry with the most up-to-date offerings in structured wiring, energy management, and lighting controls. The unparalleled growth during this time speaks volumes about the quality of HL’s leadership. Last year, HL passed the torch to Donald Hendler, whose 35 years with Leviton show him to hold the leadership qualities, business sense, and charisma to succeed as the third president of the company in its first stellar century. ❖ Quotes from our family Harold Leviton told me about someone who called to complain about a switch in her home that broke after 27 years. This prompted HL to ask the question: What can you buy for less than a buck, use every day for over 25 years and get mad at when it breaks. His answer was a Leviton switch. — Stuart H. Leading the Industr y Celebration A Tradition of Giving Philanthropy at Leviton Caring for others has always been an important tradition at the Leviton Manufacturing Company. Whether focused within the company on its employees or outside the company to various institutions of higher learning, public service organizations, and medical institutions, the urge to give generously to humanitarian causes has played an important part in the life of both Leviton’s founder and his successor. From the early days, IL made a special effort to get to know the people who worked for him, and to be there when they needed help. “Besides being the boss, he was our friend,” Joel Allen, a Leviton employee said of IL a number of years back. “His love of people generated a great many acts of charity.” IL often arranged for top-notch medical care when employees or their family members were ill, and gave willingly of IL was one of the founders of New York’s renowned Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also served as a board member (and one-time president) of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, worked as a trustee of the Brooklyn Hebrew Home and Hospital for the Aged, and was a founder-member of the medical section of Yeshiva University. In addition, he served on the board of directors of the Brooklyn Cancer Committee and was general chairman of United Jewish Appeal’s electrical industry division. IL was also concerned with helping young people. He was active in a fund drive for Hillel House at Brooklyn College (and treasurer of the college’s Hillel Foundation), and had been honored with a “Youth Oscar” by Youth United for his work with underprivileged children of the city. Yet for all the time, money, and service he donated to philanthropic causes, IL shied away from talking much about it. “When it comes to charity, it’s a funny thing,” he said. “If you give, you don’t have to explain to anybody; if you don’t … well, you figure it out.” Continuing the Tradition HL too has contributed his time and resources to a variety of philanthropic causes. Many of these underlie his commitment to education. A founder of both the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, HL also instituted the Leviton Industrial Arts Award, a highly-coveted award for New York City high school students in the electrical trades. Following the Latin expression “Mens sana in corpore sano,” or “a sound mind in a sound body,” HL also devoted a considerable amount of time to fitness, volunteering for the United Jewish Y’s Quotes from our family My fondest memory was when Leviton opened its first cordset plant in Tijuana. He has also contributed generously to the relief efforts of Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl, an organization that evacuates children from the unsafe living conditions resulting from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. Honor Roll Some of the honors HL has received in his long philanthropic career include the Anti-Defamation League’s Torch of Liberty Award, the Wire and Cable Club’s Charles D. Scott Distinguished Career Award, NEMA’s Falk award, and the Medal of Merit of the Portuguese Communities. This last citation was a particular honor for HL; it was the first time the Portuguese government chose to award the medal to a person who was not of Portuguese lineage. The Leviton company has especially close ties to the Portuguese community in Rhode Island, employing many of its members in its American Insulated Wire and Rhode Island area facilities. After a devastating earthquake hit the Azores in the 1960s, HL provided jobs for 150 displaced workers and their families. Harold Leviton is the first American to receive the Medal of Merit from the Portuguese Government. 18 • A Tradition of Giving — Philanthropy at Leviton Celebration He has also been honored for his generous help by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, the United Fund, the American/Israeli Friendship League, the United Cerebral Palsy Men’s Council, the Children’s Medical Center of New York Fund, and many others. The Leviton Family In keeping with the tradition started by his father, HL never forgot the wisdom that “charity begins at home.” As President of Leviton from 1965-2005, he worked hard to keep the “family feeling” at Leviton very much alive. Ralph DeBiasi, who worked in Finance under both IL and HL, put it this way: “I believe the human relationships people enjoy with this company are unique,” he said. “There is a real sense of caring and it’s good to know that if you needed something, they would be there to help.” For HL’s support of the BAMPAC. There, amongst tables filled with racks of specially-designed equipment, you’ll find the Leviton Test Lab, where wiring devices are subjected to many rigorous tests that demonstrate they meet Leviton’s demanding standards for safety, performance and reliability. Only after they pass these series of tests will they be made available to Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standard Association (CSA) and other testing organizations for testing, if necessary. “It is one of the largest and bestequipped test labs in the business,” said Steve Campolo, Vice President of Engineering at Leviton. I am grateful for the opportunities for my personal and professional growth to be a successful Leviton employee and I am proud to say that I work for Leviton. — Jani Wolfe Finished Goods Supervisor, El Paso, Texas About 12 and half years ago I was just a 19 year old kid with no experience who started working with Leviton Mfg. in El Paso. In these years I have learned a lot about myself and have matured into the dedicated and responsible man that I am now. I want thank Leviton for the years of experience I have gained from working in a company full of opportunities. — Peter Soltero Assistant Technical Supervisor, Production Support, El Paso Name That Product • 23 Retrospective Faces from the Past Answers Milestones in History (pages 2-7) 1. When I was there less than a year, I had forgotten my wrist watch and without hesitation Isidor Leviton took his watch off his arm and lent it to me. That’s just how he was! It didn't matter what your job was, management always had an “open door” policy to all employees. I had a wonderful career with Leviton and am very proud I was part of the team. — Barbara DeBella Former Human Resources Administrator, Little Neck 7. When I left 30 years later I had 35 artists, writers and support personnel in my fully computerized department, which produced everything from business cards to 60 foot trade show displays. All this was made possible by the forward-looking, open-minded and encouraging top management. I felt then, and feel now that it was a privilege to work for such a fine company. — Tibor Gerstl Former Vice President, Marketing Communications, Little Neck Faces from the Past • 25 A G re a t Company Celebra tes G re a t P e o p l e ow many times have you wanted to do more than say “thanks for a job well done” to a staff member who put in an extra effort, did an outstanding job, went the extra mile to satisfy a customer or who characteristically demonstrates total commitment and dedication to every task at hand?
