A Message from Our Chief Executive Officer
It is with great pleasure that I celebrate the milestone of Leviton’s centennial
anniversary with you. As valued employees of the Leviton Manufacturing Company
and members of the Leviton “family,” I invite you to commemorate this auspicious
event and participate with us in a retrospective of our shared history.
Over the years I have seen the small company my father started in Manhattan in
1906 evolve into an international giant with operations throughout the United
States, Canada, Mexico and China. Our product and service offerings have grown
significantly over the years as we expanded our wiring device and wire and cable
businesses and added new offerings such as lighting controls, voice and data and
structured cabling products.
So much has changed since Leviton first opened its doors for business, and yet
some things have stayed the same. Our core values, our dedication to quality, service, and putting people first are every bit as important today as they were when my
father first started the business a century ago.
We remain committed to providing all Leviton employees with a workplace that
encourages equality of opportunity and offers a corporate culture that inspires your
personal and professional development. You have paid us back many times over with
your loyalty, creativity, dedication and hard work. Together, we have grown into the
largest family-owned and operated wiring device company in North America.
As we build on our past success and shape our dynamic future, we look to you to continue Leviton’s legacy of innovation in a
rapidly changing industry.
Harold Leviton
CEO and Chairman of the Board
Leviton Manufacturing Company
A Message from Our President
The Leviton Manufacturing Company first opened its doors during a time of
seemingly unlimited possibilities in America. The Wright brothers had just conquered the air, Ransom Olds and Henry Ford were introducing Americans to the joys
of motoring, and Edison’s new tungsten-filament light bulb was making electrical
lighting practical.
One hundred years of incredible technological growth and change have followed.
As we proudly celebrate our centennial anniversary, we take special note of the
employees who have helped Leviton grow from a small startup company into North
America’s leading wiring device manufacturer.
Your talent, skills, and dedication have made our company a lasting and commanding presence in the electrical industry. We thank you for your hard work and
dedication. They have played a huge role in our success.
We’ve come a long way together. As Leviton enters its second century of business,
we pledge to lead the industry and seek out new opportunities for growth. Most of
all, we will strive to build on the company’s legacy of success, advance the careers of
our employees, and change our world for the better.

And while he never had a
taste for high society or stamp

different philanthropic causes, and was a
member and one-time president of the
board of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital.
Getting Things Done
Modesty aside, IL had many qualities
that contributed to his success. For one
thing, he was resourceful; he knew how to
get things done. In the early days of the
company, he was having trouble finding
qualified workers for the business. His

He was also an excellent judge of character. As his son Harold recalled: “My

he would be escorted into the office and
IL would spend exactly two minutes with
him. He would say, ‘this guy will last six

up two inches too short to pass the
minimum height requirement. But for
those two inches, IL, and the thousands
of people who have worked for Leviton
over the years, might have led a very

Instead of working the controls of a

at Leviton as he negotiated the twists

of the electrical industry. IL steered the
company towards a successful future by
purchasing supplies in large quantities,
mass-producing devices and their component parts and engineering better
products that always led the field in
technology. Under his stewardship, the
company always anticipated the
demands of the evolving electrical

The Big Picture
IL was always looking to add new
businesses to the Leviton family of
companies. From 1937 to 1950, Leviton
Celebration
acquired American Insulated Wire,
Acorn Wire and Cable, Deal Electric,
and Hale Brothers, greatly increasing
production capacity and providing many
new products not previously manufactured by Leviton, especially wire, cable,
and cord products.
One of IL’s more innovative ideas
was building a dedicated testing laboratory right at the Brooklyn plant.
Since most products needed approval
from Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
or the Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) to establish their safety, IL
decided in 1938 to streamline the
process by testing Leviton products on

After checking out the lab, UL not

asked if they could adapt it for their
own use.
That same year, IL’s first-born son,

Looking Back … And Ahead
41 years have rushed by since then.
Leviton has flourished and grown into a
world-wide presence in the industry. As
crucial as new products are to Leviton’s
success, it’s the core values of the company that continue to sustain and define
it – values instilled by IL. On the 100th
anniversary of the Leviton Manufacturing
Company, it seems fitting to include a
few words that Jack Amsterdam said a
number of years back about Leviton’s
founder, Isidor:

Retrospective
Harold Leviton
E XP A N D I N G T H E V I S I O N
You could say Harold Leviton grew
up with electricity running through his
veins. While other kids were playing
potsy or stickball on Saturdays, Harold
regularly accompanied his father on visits to the Greenpoint, Brooklyn, factory
from the age of five upwards.
“In those days, Saturday was just
another work day, so the plant was
operating, and I had free access to the
whole plant. As I grew up, I often visited the plant and became very friendly
with the employees,” Leviton said some
years back. The familiarity with staff
and facilities was a fitting preview of
things to come.
Starting Out
After graduating from the University
of Miami with a degree in Business
Administration in 1940, “HL,” began
work in earnest at the Brooklyn plant.
He learned the business from the
ground up, starting in the stock room
before moving on to Personnel,
Purchasing, and other departments.
HL eventually became Personnel
Director, instituting forward-thinking
changes and diversifying the work force
well before anti-discrimination laws
were passed that made it a necessity.
Unexpected Changes
Quotes from our family
I was a senior consulting engineer and the
only man with the name Ben, but for years,
HL called me Bernie. One day I received a
call from HL’s office asking me to come and
see him. When I entered his office expecting
bad news, he held out a coffee cup with the
name “Ben” on it. He had seen it in a store
and couldn’t resist buying it for me.

If employees were
treated well, HL reasoned, their natural competitiveness would be an
asset to the company.
“They had the knowhow and the desire to be
successful, and that’s
what motivated people to
make the company what
it is,” HL said.
The combination of a
less-centralized corporate structure, increased
employee participation
in decision-making and
rapidly changing technology set the stage for
the unprecedented
growth of Leviton through the electronic
age of the 1960s-70s, into the digital era
of today. The Sales and Engineering
departments were reorganized and
enlarged, Research and Development
was expanded, and Marketing started to
play a bigger role in company strategy.
With the unfortunate passing in
1963 of his older brother Bernard,
Leviton’s Vice President, and the
death of IL two years later, HL
found himself suddenly heading
up Leviton as President and
CEO. He quickly showed that
like his father, he would continue to emphasize the family
atmosphere, respect for people,
and importance of creating a
friendly and pleasant workplace
so crucial to the Leviton philosophy.

Leviton products into the public spotlight. One even featured Pittsburg
Steelers star running back Franco
Harris endorsing the Spec-Master
industrial product line. The company
also began participating in an increasing number of industry associations,
events, conferences and tradeshows.
Top Sellers, Big Changes
Under HL’s reign, Leviton introduced
some of its most important products to
date. The Ground Fault Circuit
Interrupter (GFCI) receptacle which
Leviton first offered in 1972, was so
effective in preventing ground fault
shock that it is estimated to have saved
hundreds of lives since its introduction.
GFCIs are now mandatory in kitchens,
bathrooms and other areas of homes
and commercial buildings and Leviton
keeps refining its GFCI offering to raise
the bar for safety.
One year later, the Decora® line of
designer-styled wiring devices was
unveiled to become an unprecedented
success; it remains a top-seller to this day.
Other markets that had been off
Leviton’s radar began receiving attention. Wiring devices and cable for
industrial and commercial applications
now became a substantial source of revenue for Leviton.
To meet the exploding demand for
products, new factories were opened
across the US, in Mexico and Canada. A
super-efficient national warehouse network was put in place to assure product
availability and speedy delivery.
In 1975, Leviton moved the company
headquarters from the Brooklyn plant to
a new facility in Little Neck, Queens.
The physical closeness of the Brooklyn
plant, where people where clustered in
cubbyholes, could no longer accommodate the corporate headquarters. In
Little Neck, there was room for the
company’s new computer center as well
as other new departments.

this time speaks volumes
about the quality of HL’s
leadership.
Last year, HL passed
the torch to Donald
Hendler, whose 35 years with Leviton
show him to hold the leadership qualities, business sense, and charisma to succeed as the third president of the company in its first stellar century. ❖
Quotes from our family
Harold Leviton told me about someone who
called to complain about a switch in her home
that broke after 27 years. This prompted HL

was a Leviton switch.

Caring for others has always been an
important tradition at the Leviton

From the early days, IL made a special effort to get to know the people
who worked for him, and to be there
when they needed help.
“Besides being the boss, he was our

Honorary Chairman Emeritus.
He has been a devoted advocate for
the United Jewish Appeal for nearly half
a century, serving on the Board of
Directors in 1977 and becoming a member of the President’s Club in 1979. He
has also contributed generously to the
relief efforts of Chabad’s Children of
Chernobyl, an organization that evacuates children from the unsafe living
conditions resulting from the 1986
Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster.
Honor Roll
Some of the honors HL has received
in his long philanthropic career include
the Anti-Defamation League’s Torch of
Liberty Award, the Wire and Cable
Club’s Charles D. Scott Distinguished
Career Award, NEMA’s Falk award,
and the Medal of Merit of the
Portuguese Communities. This last
citation was a particular honor for HL;
it was the first time the Portuguese
government chose to award the medal
to a person who was not of Portuguese
lineage. The Leviton company has
especially close ties to the Portuguese
community in Rhode Island, employing
many of its members in its American
Insulated Wire and Rhode Island area
facilities. After a devastating earthquake hit the
Azores in the
1960s, HL provided jobs for
150 displaced
workers and
their families.
Harold Leviton is the first American to receive the Medal of Merit
from the Portuguese Government.

A Tradition of Giving — Philanthropy at Leviton
Celebration
He has also been honored for his
generous help by the Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies, the United
Fund, the American/Israeli Friendship
League, the United Cerebral Palsy
Men’s Council, the Children’s Medical
Center of New York Fund, and many
others.
The Leviton Family
In keeping with the tradition started
by his father, HL never forgot the wisdom that “charity begins at home.” As
President of Leviton from 1965-2005,
he worked hard to keep the “family
feeling” at Leviton very much alive.
Ralph DeBiasi, who worked in Finance
under both IL and HL, put it this way:
“I believe the human relationships
people enjoy with this company are
unique,” he said. “There is a real sense
of caring and it’s good to know that if
you needed something, they would be
there to help.”
For HL’s support of the BAMPAC.

Quotes from our family
While I have had many great experiences as a
Leviton employee, I think the most memorable experience I have had has been the
opportunity to participate in the Extreme

see a group of people volunteer their time,
labor and materials to reach out and help a
needy family was extremely inspirational.

Retrospective
Leviton’s Test Laboratory
P
roduct safety for Leviton begins
in a large windowless room at
Leviton’s Corporate
Headquarters in Little Neck. There,
amongst tables filled with racks of specially-designed equipment, you’ll find
the Leviton Test Lab, where wiring
devices are subjected to many rigorous
tests that demonstrate they meet
Leviton’s demanding standards for
safety, performance and reliability.
Only after they pass these series of
tests will they be made available to
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the
Canadian Standard Association (CSA)
and other testing organizations for
testing, if necessary.
“It is one of the largest and bestequipped test labs in the business,” said
Steve Campolo, Vice President of
Engineering at Leviton. Campolo originally worked at UL before coming to
Leviton 25 years ago.
Home to hundreds of machines capable of performing thousands of tests,
the test lab simulates the kinds of usage
and wear that a device might receive in
a lifetime of normal service in anywhere
from a few days to a month, depending
on the product.
Quotes from our family
I am proud to have contributed to the standard and quality of Leviton products. One of
the highlights of my life at Leviton was the
day HL said to me: “Karl, whenever I visit
one of our facilities, I see your mark. At age
85, I still call Leviton “My company.”

this saved an immeasurable amount of
time, effort, and money.
When the corporate headquarters
moved from Greenpoint to Little Neck
in 1975, the test lab came with it. The
lab was expanded considerably in 1984
to its current size.
The lab today maintains approximately 96 testing stations including
electrical and physical testing, load,
overload, and temperature limitation,
environmental and application testing,
and electromagnetic interference
testing.
The stringent series of tests are necessary to uphold the high standards
customers such as architects, hospital
technicians, industrial engineers, and
homeowners have come to expect from
Leviton products.

Early in my 35 year career at Leviton, I had
the honor to be tutored by our late and great

In recounting my 25 years at Leviton, success
in meeting the daily challenges was made
possible by being able to work with a most

My fondest memory is of all the wonderful people I worked with. We were a big family and that
was Leviton’s strong point as a company. Both
my parents worked there as teenagers. I was so
amazed at the sounds and the smiling faces that
would peer out from behind the machines.
Little did I realize that I would spend 27 years
there myself! Now, I reminisce and wonder what
they are all doing now. Thank you Harold and
Happy Anniversary!

One thing that makes my years here so special is
this is where I started my own family. Eight years
ago I traveled to China and adopted a baby girl.
Emily is so proud whenever she visits the office.
She tells her schoolmates how she comes to

My husband and I are building our “retirement” home in the Sacramento mountains of
New Mexico. We would not have been able to
start this dream home without my job here at
Leviton. I am grateful for the opportunities for
my personal and professional growth to be a
successful Leviton employee and I am proud to
say that I work for Leviton.
— Jani Wolfe

About 12 and half years ago I was just a 19 year

with Leviton Mfg. in El Paso. In these years I

Quotes from our family
I have been very fortunate in my 47 years to
have had the pleasure of working for Leviton
with fond memories of Isidor, Bernard, Harold
and Paul Leviton, Jack Amsterdam, Jack
Leavenworth, Harvey Kram and others. When
I was there less than a year, I had forgotten
my wrist watch and without hesitation Isidor
Leviton took his watch off his arm and lent it
to me. That’s just how he was! It didn't matter
what your job was, management always had
an “open door” policy to all employees. I had
a wonderful career with Leviton and am very
proud I was part of the team.

Quotes from our family
On my first day as an Art Director, I met two
artists working behind wooden drawing boards
and the company’s Advertising Manager who
was also the copywriter. When I left 30 years
later I had 35 artists, writers and support personnel in my fully computerized department,
which produced everything from business
cards to 60 foot trade show displays. All this
was made possible by the forward-looking,
open-minded and encouraging top management. I felt then, and feel now that it was a
privilege to work for such a fine company.
