GNS Science Report 2012/01
ABSTRACT
The Tasman Frontier region is a vast submerged continental fragment of over 3,000,000 sq
km between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It hosts a number of unexplored
sedimentary basins, some of which may share a common geological origin with the Taranaki
and Gippsland basins, where petroleum production is established. The Tasman Frontier
database is a compilation of digital seismic reflection data from the region that are able to be
made publicly available, as at March 2012. The database contains c. 100,000 line km of
seismic reflection data that have been modified to seg-y format with uniform header
information and byte locations of key fields, so that they can be easily loaded into a computer
workstation. The project is a collaborative initiative between GNS Science, Geoscience
Australia, Service Géologique de Nouvelle-Calédonie (SGNC-DIMENC), Agence de
Développement Economique de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (ADECAL), and Institut français de
recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (IFREMER). GNS Science Report 2012/01 contains
the database as a supplement and can be obtained from GNS Science (gns.cri.nz). The
report outlines the exploration history and geological setting of the region, gives a technical
description of the data, and specifies licence terms and registration instructions for users.

INTRODUCTION
The Tasman Frontier region lies offshore between eastern Australia, western New Zealand,
and New Caledonia. The Tasman Frontier includes crustal components that are thought to
have continental affinities: the Lord Howe Rise, Bellona Trough, Challenger Plateau,
Dampier Ridge, Middleton Basin, Fairway Basin, New Caledonia Trough, Norfolk Ridge
System, Reinga Basin, and deep-water parts of Taranaki and Northland basins (Figure 1).
The Tasman Frontier database is a compilation of all publicly available digital seismic
reflection data from this region, totalling c. 100,000 line km. We also include data from
margins of basins with probable oceanic affinity: Tasman Basin, Norfolk Basin, South Fiji
Basin, and South Loyalty Basin. We do not include data from the eastern Australian
continental margin, data from north of the Loyalty Islands or the Kenn Plateau, and we only
include a subset of data from nearshore New Zealand.
There is currently no petroleum production or discoveries in the remote frontier region
covered by this database. Petroleum is produced in the adjacent and contiguous shallowwater parts of Taranaki Basin of New Zealand. Selected seismic lines from Taranaki Basin
are included that allow ties to petroleum exploration boreholes.
The earliest relevant geophysical exploration occurred shortly after the conception and
widespread acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s. By the mid-1970s, the
basic elements of crustal and sedimentary basin structure were determined, and the history
of Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic geological events inferred from geophysical cruises and
ocean drilling. There has been steady and ongoing re-evaluation and revision of the tectonic
and stratigraphic framework since then, but the initial plate-tectonic interpretations have
generally stood the test of time and are shown to be largely consistent with later
observations.
The 1970’s was a time of heightened petroleum industry activity globally, due to energy
crises and the development of a plate tectonic paradigm to guide geophysical exploration.
The remote Tasman Frontier region was of specific interest due to the discovery of the giant
Maui gas field in adjacent offshore Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, in 1969. Between 1979
and 2010, the Maui field produced 3.3 TCF of gas and 183 mmbbls of liquid petroleum.
Petroleum industry interest in the Tasman Frontier waned during the 1980s and has been
low since then. Oil prices were too low to make exploration and production in this remote
region economic, and there was no nearby market for large gas reserves, or even land for
local processing facilities.
The most recent phase of geophysical interest in the region was driven by the United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS), which defines rights over seabed
resources. The convention requires each country to provide a minimum level of geological
and geophysical evidence to support its submission to the United Nations Commission for
the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). New Zealand, Australia, and France/New
Caledonia share a common continental shelf over the Tasman Frontier region and, therefore,
have collected new data to support their submissions to the CLCS, and to better understand
the potential natural resources in these areas. The Tasman Frontier database (this project)
arose from the conclusion of sovereign boundary negotiations and the subsequent common
interest in better understanding and utilising natural resources of the region. The database
contains c. 100,000 km of seismic lines (Figure 2) and is intended for public distribution
under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (see below, Appendix 1).

GEOLOGICAL SETTING
During the 1960s and 1970s, a geophysical case was made that the Lord Howe Rise may
have an underlying ‘continental-type’ crustal structure, whereas marginal basins east of the
Norfolk Ridge were related to Cenozoic evolution of Tonga-Kermadec subduction [Brodie,
1964; Karig, 1971; Packham and Falvey, 1971; Shor et al., 1971]. The basic stratigraphic
architecture of the region was sampled and inferences of tectonic structure and history
confirmed during legs 21 and 30 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) at sites 203-210
and 285-289 [Burns and Andrews, 1973; Packham and Andrews, 1975]. Of particular
significance were DSDP sites 206, 207, and 208, which remain the only sites that have
sampled strata older than Eocene in age [Burns et al., 1973a; Burns et al., 1973b; c]. This
initial work, followed by subsequent detailed studies offshore and of adjacent land areas, has
shown that the tectonic history of the Tasman Frontier can be broadly divided into 4 phases:
0 to 50 Ma:
Tonga-Kermadec subduction.
50 to 80 Ma:
Passive.
80 to 100 Ma:
Tasman continental rifting.
100 to >350 Ma:
Gondwana subduction margin.
The continental ‘basement’ beneath the bathymetric rises is inferred from dredge samples,
seismic velocities, and gravity and magnetic anomalies to be similar to rocks found in New
Zealand, New Caledonia, and eastern Australia [Collot et al., 2012; Klingelhoefer et al., 2007;
Mortimer, 2004a; b; Mortimer et al., 2008; Sutherland, 1999; Tulloch et al., 1991; Wood and
Woodward, 2002]. The Lord Howe Rise and Challenger Plateau are probably mostly
composed of rocks referred to as the ‘Western Province’ in New Zealand or the ‘Lachlan’ and
‘New England’ orogens in Australia. They include quartzose metasedimentary rocks and
granitoids of Paleozoic age and they represent the eastern edge of Gondwana. Mesozoic
coal-bearing sediments similar to those found in eastern Australia, New Caledonia, and New
Zealand may also occur within the Tasman Frontier region [Milne and Quick, 1999; Norvick
et al., 2008; Suggate, 1990]. Deep-marine arc-derived sediments of Mesozoic age are known
in New Caledonia [Cluzel and Meffre, 2002] and marine shelf sediments are known from
Papua New Guinea [Brown et al., 1979], but the extent and types of Mesozoic marine
sediments are unknown in the Tasman Frontier region. High-amplitude magnetic anomalies
and a single dredge sample from the West Norfolk Ridge suggest that the southern New
Caledonia Trough is underlain by a fossil arc of late Paleozoic and Mesozoic age that formed
along the active margin of Gondwana [Mortimer et al., 1998; Sutherland, 1999]. The geology
of New Caledonia and northern New Zealand suggests that the Norfolk Ridge System is
underlain by Mesozoic forearc accretionary rocks that formed at the convergent margin of
Gondwana [Adams et al., 2009; Aitchison et al., 1998; Cluzel and Meffre, 2002; Cluzel et al.,
2010; Mortimer, 2004a].
There was a change in tectonic regime along the Tasman sector of the Gondwanan margin
during Cretaceous time, from subduction and convergent processes to widespread rifting and
extension. Igneous activity was widespread and of variable type and chemistry during
Cretaceous time. Calc-alkaline and adakitic (high Sr/Y) activity with a subduction-related
signature is characteristic of the early phase (130-110 Ma), whereas an intra-plate rift setting
characterises later activity after c. 100 Ma [Bryan et al., 1997; Cluzel et al., 2010; Higgins et
al., 2011; Mortimer et al., 1999; Tulloch et al., 2009]. Late Cretaceous rift basins that contain
4
GNS Science Report 2012/01
coaly sediment facies overlain by transgressive marine sandstones and mudstones are
known in New Zealand, eastern Australia, and New Caledonia. These rocks collectively
make up well-known petroleum systems of the productive Gippsland and Taranaki regions
[King and Thrasher, 1996; Shanmugam, 1985; Wilkins and George, 2002], and are likely to
be present in the Tasman Frontier region [Collot et al., 2009; Herzer et al., 1999; Uruski and
Wood, 1991; Uruski, 2008]. The end of widespread rifting in New Zealand, New Caledonia
and Australia, and the subsequent transition to passive margin conditions, was
approximately contemporaneous with the onset of seafloor spreading in the Tasman Sea and
hence formation of the Tasman Basin.
A Late Cretaceous to early Cenozoic seafloor spreading history of the Tasman Basin is
inferred from magnetic anomalies [Hayes and Ringis, 1973; Weissel and Hayes, 1972].
Detailed later work has shown that the earliest seafloor spreading may predate chron 34y (83
Ma) east of Tasmania [Royer and Rollet, 1997], but marginal seafloor along much of the
western edge of the Lord Howe Rise probably formed during chron 33r (83-79 Ma) [Gaina et
al., 1998; Sutherland, 1999]. Seafloor spreading ceased in the central Tasman Basin during
chron 24 (53-52 Ma), or very shortly afterwards [Gaina et al., 1998].
There were widespread tectonic changes throughout the Pacific and Indian oceans during
the Eocene time interval of 52-43 Ma. New subduction zones formed in the western Pacific
and there was a dramatic change in Pacific plate motion that resulted in the Emperor-Hawaii
seamount chain bend [Hall et al., 2003; Steinberger et al., 2004]. Deformation, exhumation,
and emplacement of ultra-mafic, mafic, and sedimentary allochthons occurred in New
Caledonia during Middle and Late Eocene time [Aitchison et al., 1995; Baldwin et al., 2007;
Cluzel et al., 2001]. Seismic-stratigraphic evidence shows that the physiography of the New
Caledonia Trough was either formed or substantially modified during this Eocene event,
though Cretaceous sedimentary basins beneath the trough escaped major Cenozoic
convergent deformation in most places [Collot et al., 2008; Sutherland et al., 2010]. Regional
deformation and emplacement of allochthons in northern New Zealand occurred later than in
New Caledonia or the Norfolk Ridge System, with the onset of major tectonic activity in the
south being during Late Oligocene and Early Miocene time (c. 30-20 Ma) [Bache et al., 2012;
Herzer, 1995; Herzer et al., 1997; Rait et al., 1991; Stagpoole and Nicol, 2008].
The relative motions of the Australian plate relative to the Pacific plate are precisely known
for the period since chron 20 (43 Ma), because the plate boundary south of New Zealand
was extensional and a plate circuit through Antarctica can be followed to provide an
additional constraint [Sutherland, 1995; Wood et al., 1996]. However, Late Eocene to Recent
subduction zone roll-back produced back-arc basins (Loyalty, Norfolk, South Fiji, North Fiji,
Havre, Lau) and ridges (Loyalty, Three Kings, Lau-Colville, Tonga-Kermadec, Vanuatu)
interpreted as fossil and active arcs east of the Norfolk Ridge System, which may also be
intruded by Cenozoic arc rocks [Crawford et al., 2003; Herzer and Mascle, 1996; Herzer et
al., 2009; Mortimer et al., 2007; Schellart et al., 2006]. The complexity of basin opening
makes local determination of past plate boundary configurations and rates difficult. This
backarc region has mostly isolated the submerged continental part of the Tasman Frontier
region from Cenozoic subduction-related deformation and volcanism.

SCOPE AND DESCRIPTION OF DATABASE
3.1
OVERVIEW
The Tasman Frontier database was prepared by GNS Science in collaboration with
It contains seismic-reflection data
collected for petroleum industry exploration, maritime boundary determinations (UNCLOS),
government assessments, and scientific research. We have reformatted these data into segy format with uniform header information and standardised byte location positions of key
fields, so that the data can be easily loaded into digital workstations for future research and
exploration. GNS Science, Service Géologique de Nouvelle-Calédonie and Geoscience
Australia expect to improve and interpret this database. A formal registration of usage with
GNS Science will allow users to access these updates, interpretations, supplementary data,
and other related data and products (section 5.0).
3.2
SCOPE AND EXTENT
The primary focus of the Tasman Frontier project has been compilation of all available openfile digital seismic reflection data from the submerged continental region, though we have
included data from adjacent areas if available (Figure 1 and Figure 2). The Tasman Frontier
database contains legacy data acquired for a variety of purposes (industry, research,
UNCLOS) over a period of c. 40 years, and some paper records were digitised so that they
could be included.
The most derived processing products (e.g. migrated data) have been selected for addition
to the database, but in some cases only stacked data are available. Data quality is highly
variable. Due to the regional scale and inclusion of a wide variety of legacy data in the
database, no attempt was made to reconcile issues of data quality or processing variability.
The primary goal of the project was to produce uniform seg-y files with standardised headers
and internal format that could be used for regional correlation and interpretation. The
database is not suitable for fine scale, high-resolution petroleum prospect and play
interpretation.
Metadata associated with specific surveys is given in section 10.0. This information is of
variable completeness and intended to assist with future work. A full list of lines with shot
point and CDP range information is given in section 11.0.
3.3
WORKFLOW AND EDITING
•
Load into Schlumberger IESX Geoframe 4.2.
•
Check navigation and rectify issues. Data were originally in different projection
systems, but all lines were transformed to UTM59S.
•
Merge data with checked navigation and export in SEG-Y format.
•
Shift byte locations of header fields to industry standard Rev 1 SEG-Y using Globe
Claritas seismic processing software (developed by GNS Science).
EBCDIC headers (e.g. section 12.0) contain metadata that includes trace header byte
locations and a reference to the licence terms (section 9.0).

NAMING CONVENTION
Each seismic line name is subdivided by dash and underscore characters. The final section
of the name specifies the country of origin (‘nz’: New Zealand; ‘nc’: New Caledonia; ‘ga’:
Australia), and hence defines the contact details for further information (section 6.0). In
general, the earlier section of the line name is the original line name of the provider.
However, lines in this dataset that were sourced from New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals
(NZP&M) have additional information systematically incorporated into the name (Figure 3).

Licence or a Creative Commons jurisdiction license with the same Licence Elements as this Licence.
•
“Licence” means this Creative Commons New Zealand Public Licence agreement.
•
“Licence Elements” means the following high-level licence attributes indicated in the title of this Licence:
Attribution, Share-Alike.
•
“Licensor” means one or more legally recognised persons or entities offering the Work under the terms
and conditions of this Licence.
•
“Original Author” means the individual(s) or entity/ies who created the Work.
•
“Work” means the work protected by copyright which is offered under the terms of this Licence.
•
“You” means an individual or entity exercising rights under this Licence who has not previously violated
the terms of this Licence with respect to the Work, or who has received express permission from the
Licensor to exercise rights under this Licence despite a previous violation.
•
For the purpose of this Licence, when not inconsistent with the context, words in the singular number
include the plural number.
2.
Licence Terms
2.1. Subject to the terms of this agreement the Licensor hereby grants to You a worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive, Licence for use and for the duration of copyright in the Work.
You may:
•
copy the Work;
•
create one or more Adaptations. You must take reasonable steps to ensure any Adaptation clearly
identifies that changes were made to the original Work;
•
incorporate the Work into one or more Collections;
•
copy Adaptations or the Work as incorporated in any Collection; and
•
publish, distribute, archive, perform or otherwise disseminate the Work, the Adaptation or the Work as
incorporated in any Collection, to the public.
18
GNS Science Report 2012/01
All these rights may be exercised in any material form in any media whether now known or hereafter created. All
these rights also include the right to make such modifications as are technically necessary to exercise the rights in
other media and formats.
HOWEVER,
You must not:
•
impose any terms on the use to be made of the Work, the Adaptation or the Work as incorporated in a
Collection that alter or restrict the terms of this Licence or the Applicable Licence, as applicable, or any
rights granted under it or have the effect or intent of restricting the ability to exercise those rights;
•
impose any digital rights management technology on the Work, the Adaptation or the Work as
incorporated in a Collection that alters or restricts the terms of this Licence or any rights granted under it
or has the effect or intent of restricting the ability to exercise those rights;
•
sublicense the Work;
•
falsely Attribute the Work to someone other than the Original Author;
•
subject the Work to any derogatory treatment as defined in the Copyright Act 1994 provided that if the
Licensor is the Original Author the Licensor will not enforce this sub-clause to the extent necessary to
enable You to reasonably exercise Your right under clause 2.1 to make Adaptations but not otherwise.
FINALLY,
You must:
•
make reference to this Licence or the Applicable Licence, as applicable, (by Uniform Resource Identifier
(URI), spoken word or as appropriate to the media used) on all copies of the Work, Adaptations and
Collections published, distributed, performed or otherwise disseminated or made available to the public
by You;
•
recognise the Licensor’s / Original Author’s right of Attribution (right to be identified) in any Work,
Adaptation and Collection that You publish, distribute, perform or otherwise disseminate to the public
and ensure that You credit the Licensor / Original Author as appropriate to the media used. You will
however remove such a credit if requested by the Licensor/Original Author;
•
not assert or imply any connection with sponsorship or endorsement by the Original Author or Licensor
of You or Your use of the Work, without the separate, express prior written permission of the Original
Author or Licensor; and
•
to the extent reasonably practicable, keep intact all notices that refer to this Licence, in particular the
URI, if any, that the Licensor specifies to be associated with the Work, unless such URI does not refer to
the copyright notice or licensing information for the Work.
Additional Provisions
2.2. Further licence from the Licensor
Each time You publish, distribute, perform or otherwise disseminate
•
the Work; or
•
any Adaptation; or
GNS Science Report 2012/01
19
•
the Work as incorporated in a Collection
the Licensor agrees to offer to the relevant third party making use of the Work (“User”) (in any of the alternatives
set out above) a licence to use the Work on the same terms and conditions as granted to You hereunder.
2.3. Further licence from You
Each time You publish, distribute, perform or otherwise disseminate
•
an Adaptation; or
•
an Adaptation as incorporated in a Collection
You agree to offer to the User (in either of the alternatives set out above) a licence to use the Adaptation on any
of the following premises and to comply with such licence:
•
a licence to the Adaptation on the same terms and conditions as the licence granted to You hereunder;
or
•
a later version of the licence granted to You hereunder with the same Licence Elements; or
•
any other Creative Commons licence (whether the Unported or a jurisdiction licence) with the same
Licence Elements.
•
a Creative Commons Compatible Licence.
2.4. This Licence does not affect any rights that the User may have under any applicable law, including fair
use, fair dealing or any other legally recognised limitation or exception to copyright infringement.
2.5. All rights not expressly granted by the Licensor are hereby reserved.
2.6. The Licensor waives the right to collect royalties, whether individually or via a licensing body such as a
collecting society, for any exercise by You of the rights granted under this Licence.
2.7. If the Licensor is the Original Author the Licensor waives its moral right to object to derogatory
treatments of the Work to the extent necessary to enable You to reasonably exercise Your right under
this Licence to make Adaptations but not otherwise. If the Licensor is not the Original Author the Work
will still be subject to the moral rights of the Original Author.
3.
Warranties and Disclaimer
Except as required by law or as otherwise agreed in writing between the parties, the Work is licensed by the
Licensor on an "as is" and "as available" basis and without any warranty of any kind, either express or implied.
4.
Limit of Liability
Subject to any liability which may not be excluded or limited by law the Licensor shall not be liable on any legal
basis (including without limitation negligence) and hereby expressly excludes all liability for loss or damage
howsoever and whenever caused to You.
5.
Termination
The rights granted to You under this Licence shall terminate automatically upon any breach by You of the terms of
this Licence. Individuals or entities who have received Adaptations or Collections from You under this Licence,
however, will not have their Licences terminated provided such individuals or entities remain in full compliance
with those Licences. Clauses 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will survive any termination of this Licence.
20
GNS Science Report 2012/01
6.
General
6.1. The validity or enforceability of the remaining terms of this agreement is not affected by the holding of
any provision of it to be invalid or unenforceable.
6.2. This Licence constitutes the entire Licence Agreement between the parties with respect to the Work
licensed here. There are no understandings, agreements or representations with respect to the Work not
specified here. The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional provisions that may appear in any
communication in any form.
6.3. A person who is not a party to this Licence shall have no rights under the Contracts (Privity) Act 1982 to
enforce any of its terms.
7.
On the role of Creative Commons
7.1. Creative Commons does not authorise either the Licensor or the User to use the trade mark “Creative
Commons” or any related trade mark, including the Creative Commons logo, except to indicate that the
Work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence. Any permitted use has to be in compliance with
the Creative Commons trade mark usage guidelines at the time of use of the Creative Commons trade
mark. These guidelines may be found on the Creative Commons website or be otherwise available upon
request from time to time. For the avoidance of doubt this trade mark restriction does not form part of this
Licence.
7.2. Creative Commons Corporation does not profit financially from its role in providing this Licence and will
not investigate the claims of any Licensor or user of the Licence.
7.3. One of the conditions that Creative Commons Corporation requires of the Licensor and You is an
acknowledgement of its limited role and agreement by all who use the Licence that the Corporation is not
responsible to anyone for the statements and actions of You or the Licensor or anyone else attempting to
use or using this Licence.
7.4. Creative Commons Corporation is not a party to this Licence, and makes no warranty whatsoever in
connection to the Work or in connection to the Licence, and in all events is not liable for any loss or
damage resulting from the Licensor's or Your reliance on this Licence or on its enforceability.
7.5. USE OF THIS LICENCE MEANS THAT YOU AND THE LICENSOR EACH ACCEPTS THESE CONDITIONS IN SECTION 7.1, 7.2,
7.3, 7.4 AND EACH ACKNOWLEDGES CREATIVE COMMONS CORPORATION’S VERY LIMITED ROLE AS A FACILITATOR OF
THE LICENCE FROM THE LICENSOR TO YOU.
Creative Commons Notice
Creative Commons is not a party to this Licence, and makes no warranty whatsoever in connection with the Work.
Creative Commons will not be liable to You or any party on any legal theory for any damages whatsoever,
including without limitation any general, special, incidental or consequential damages arising in connection to this
Licence. Notwithstanding the foregoing two (2) sentences, if Creative Commons has expressly identified itself as
the Licensor hereunder, it shall have all rights and obligations of Licensor.
Except for the limited purpose of indicating to the public that the Work is licensed under the CCPL, Creative
Commons does not authorise the use by either party of the trademark "Creative Commons" or any related
trademark or logo of Creative Commons without the prior written consent of Creative Commons. Any permitted
use will be in compliance with Creative Commons' then-current trademark usage guidelines, as may be published
on its website or otherwise made available upon request from time to time. For the avoidance of doubt, this
trademark restriction does not form part of this Licence.

In February and March 1996, 13 multiple channels marine seismic lines were shot across
New Zealand's South Island. These surveys were carried out as part of a joint US – NZ
investigation of continental defamation at convergent plate boundaries, known as the South
Island GeopHysical Transection (SIGHT) project. The lines were processed at GNS and
Victoria University with the aim of providing new information on the deep structure of the
Pacific/ Australian plate boundary.
