1. General
The Endurans Bulkhead is certified to the ATEX standards, certificate number: CML 13Atex4001X. The certificate
should be used in conjunction with the installation, operation and maintenance of the product.
Installation and electrical connections must be carried out in accordance with EN/IEC60079-14 and EN/IEC60079-15
as applicable and local or national standards and/or codes of practice as applicable.
Endurans luminaire is class 1 apparatus and must be suitably earthed. An external earth stud is provided. It is the
installer /users responsibility to ensure that the luminaire and the relevant ratings are suitable for the application, zone
and environment and ensure the materials as stated will not be attacked by existing foreseeable aggressive
substances.
It should be noted that this equipment may be provided with an external non-metallic coating (paint finish). In this case
and to avoid the build up of an electrostatic charge, clean only with a damp cloth.
2. Supply Voltages
For voltage refer to rating plate. The ballast tapping must match the supply voltage.
Depending on the luminaire/ballast type supplied it may be possible to adjust the voltage tapping on the ballast to suit
the electrical supply. Where removable threadlock adhesive has been applied to terminal screws, this must be
reapplied to terminal screws when tightened after any adjustment to tappings.
Note: it is important that the frequency of the supply matches the frequency stated on the ballast rating label.
Supply voltage variation must not exceed ±6% and the luminaire should not be operated continuously beyond this
limit. In any case the voltage variation must NEVER exceed ±10% as this will invalidate the certification and could lead
to the product being unsafe. If in doubt, advice should be sought from Ablux technical department.
3. Mounting Luminaire
The luminaire should be mounted on a solid structure not prone to excessive levels of vibration or shock. No objects
should be placed within 1m directly in front of the glass window. The luminaire should be fixed in position in
accordance with lighting design parameters and secured using appropriate fixings.
If mounted with the lamp in a vertical orientation, the lamp cap must be below the lamp.
4. Supply Cable
The Endurans bulkhead must use a cable suitably rated for a temperature of at least 43ºC above the site maximum
ambient temperature. Therefore if the Endurans is being used in an area where the maximum ambient temperature is
55ºC, the supply cable must have a minimum temperature rating of 98ºC. If the maximum ambient temperature was
25ºC then the cable would need to have use a cable rated at 68ºC(this applies even if the maximum Tamb shown on
apparatus label is higher)Terminals are suitable for looping up to 6mm² conductors. Cable type must be effectively
filled to ensure that the restricted breathing properties of the luminaire are maintained.
Access to the terminals is via the front cover which can be removed by undoing the four cover screws and removing
the lamp and reflector.
All electrical connections and components should be inspected for security of wiring and cracks in insulation and stray
conductor strands. The conductors should be fitted into the terminal block ensuring that conductors are not stretched
or stressed. Check that the ballast tappings match the supply voltage and adjust as necessary. If removable
threadlock adhesive has been applied to the terminal screws, this should be reapplied prior to tightening the terminal
screws after adjustment. When terminating the conductor into the terminal block this must be carried out in an ambient
temperature of between -10ºC and 80ºC, also it is vital that no more than 1mm of bare conductor protrudes from the
terminal throat. The mains terminal block does not require threadlock adhesive to be applied to the screws.
Maximum current rating of the terminal block is 16A continuous. Only one conductor may be fitted in each terminal
way. Tighten all used and unused terminal screws. Refit the cover, ensuring that the gasket is clean and undamaged.
5. Cable Glands
This luminaire uses restricted breathing as the protection concept. Cable glands & stopping plugs must maintain the
restricted breathing properties of the luminaire and should be suitably certified Ex nR or must meet the requirements of
EN 60079-0 & EN 60079-15 for ATEX certified apparatus and IEC 60079-0 & IEC 60079-15 for IEC Ex certified
apparatus for restricted breathing enclosures. Cable glands should be fitted with an appropriate sealing washer to the
outside of the luminaire and fitted with a locknut to the inside. The sealing washer must maintain the restricted
breathing properties of the luminaire and meet the minimum IP rating as noted on the apparatus label. Standard cable
entry is M20 clearance; M25 optional. The standard M20 clearance hole may be increased to M25 on site and care
should be taken to ensure no swarf or debris enters any of the electrical components. All swarf and debris must be
removed from the interior of the luminaire.

6. Lamp Fitting and Replacement
Access to the lamp is via the front cover. Switch off supply and allow the luminaire to cool. Loosen the 4 securing
screws and remove the cover. The lamp can then be removed and disposed of in accordance with local or national
regulations.
Replacement lamp must match the characteristics of the electrical data shown on page 1 of these instructions.
Lamp must be firmly screwed into place to ensure adequate electrical contact. The cover gasket should be checked for
tears or deterioration and replaced if necessary (see below).
Refit cover and tighten securing screws.
Maintenance
1. Visual Inspection
Visually inspect the luminaire for signs of water ingress or loose screws,
Check operation of lamp. Any flickering or cycling ‘on and off’ of the lamp is a good indication that the lamp has
reached the end of its useful life and should be replaced immediately.
2. Internal; Inspection
Switch off supply and allow the luminaire to cool.
Remove cover as detailed above and check the state of the gasket for any tears or dirt. Replace as necessary (see
below) Replace lamp if required and check securely tightened. Refit lamp access cover.
Check tightness of cable gland and tighten as necessary.
Check tightness of all terminal screws.
Check for any signs of water ingress and remedy as necessary.
Check condition of all wiring and electrical components for signs of arcing or overheating.
Refer to Ablux technical department for advice if any components are in doubt.
3. Fault Finding
Any fault finding must be carried out with the luminaire de energised and without a flammable atmosphere present.
Generally, HID control gear is very reliable and the majority of faults will relate to aged or faulty lamps, if changing the
lamp does not solve the problem, then, for fault finding or replacement parts please refer to Ablux technical
department for assistance.
4. Gasket Replacement
Lamp cover gasket
The lamp access gasket is a one piece silicone rubber component and can only be obtained from Ablux. The old
gasket should be removed and any trace of sealant cleaned off. The area surrounding the gasket should be clean and
free from dirt or grease. The new gasket should have a continuous bead of silicone sealant applied to the rear face of
the gasket and then the gasket offered up to the glass, smoothed down and any excess sealant wiped off. The cover
should be refitted immediately to ensure even compression of the sealant. A restricted breathing test should be carried
out to ensure compliance as detailed below.
5. Restricted Breathing Test
Where parts such as gaskets have been replaced, it will be necessary to conduct a restricted breathing test on the
luminaire enclosure. If required, one of the cable glands may be removed for fitment of the vacuum equipment.
A suitable vacuum gauge should be connected to the enclosure through one of the cable entries. Ideally the sealing
washer intended to be used with the cable gland or stopping plug should be employed to create the seal.
Under constant temperature conditions, the time taken for a vacuum of 0.3kPa (30mm water gauge) below
atmospheric to change to 0.27kPa (27mm water gauge) below atmospheric shall not be less than 27seconds.
Further information regarding restricted breathing tests on this apparatus can be obtained from Ablux technical
department.

Fuse Ratings
Fuse Ratings
1. HID lamps are subject to a large current inrush on initial startup and this may be up to 25 times the rated capacitor
current and may last up to 20 milliseconds after initial switch on.
HID lamps have a high initial starting current which declines steadily until the lamp has reached its optimum operating
condition. This starting current may be up to 2.25 times the running current and may not reach normal running current
until 5 minutes after switch on.
Selection of fuses and MCB’s should be taken in conjunction with this information and that of the protective device
manufacturer.
Selection of fuse ratings should be made in accordance with wiring regulations and local codes of practice.
If in doubt, please contact Ablux technical department for assistance.
Any protective device fitted, must have a breaking capacity (PSCC) of at least 1500A.
