Dust, soil, etc., shall be removed by gently scrubbing with a clean cloth and rinsing with clean water and wiped dry. 4.3.2 4.3.2.1 Detail Method Requirements Method 1 - Impression Stamp Impression stamping shall be done by a steel die with round bottomed characters. Impression stamping shall not cause abrasion, flattened areas or other visible marks on the reverse side of the stamped surface except on nameplates. 4.3.2.2 Method 2 - Electro-Chemical Etch Electro-chemical etch (electro-etch) shall be performed by pressing a mask or stencil against the surface, and electro-chemically etching the base material from the exposure permitted by the stencil. After marking a part, cleaner must be used to neutralize the effect of the etching fluids. Dry part with clean wipe cloth, and apply corrosion preventive oil by spraying or immersing. Note: Improper cleaning may cause severe corrosion “in” and “around” the marked area. When it becomes necessary to mark a surface which has been anodized (i.e. marking a subassembly number on a finished detail part), anodize must be removed locally prior to marking. Apply a chemical conversion coating to the area where the anodize coating was removed, after marking, per MIL-DTL-5541, Class 1A. Note: Ref. Publications: Electro-Chem Etch Metal & Marketing Co. After painting or coating, the identification must be visible and legible. Apply protective treatment to bare / exposed areas for corrosion protection. 4.3.2.4 Method 4 - Casting, Forged and Molded Cast, forged and molded markings may be either raised or depressed and shall be an integral part of the item to be marked. Unless otherwise specified on the Engineering drawing, the characters shall be raised / depressed and legible. The height shall be per Paragraph 4.3.1.2. 4.3.2.5 Method 5 - Laser Engrave/ Micro Machining Marking per this method will conform to the requirements of applicable drawing. 4.3.2.6 Method 6 - 2D Data Matrix with Laser Dot Matrix Marking per this method shall be specified by the Engineering drawing. 4.3.2.7 Method 7 – Hot Stamping (reference the Company’s Specification S-254) Marking per this method will conform to the requirements of applicable drawing. 4.3.2.8 Method 8 - Ink Stamp The marking(s) shall be applied by any manual or mechanical stamp. When the fielded LRU is reworked, a new nameplate will be issued with the new part number and the existing serial number will be transferred with the addition of a “1” in the first serial number digit. For example; PN 44309-10 PN 44309-12 SN 00092 when reworked will be converted into; SN 10092 If another change occurs requiring a part number change, the first digit of the serial number will be incremented to the next number and the sequence will repeat; PN 44309-13 SN 20XXX Similarly, if a conversion occurs to a new LRU configuration, then the change will use the same process to retain the original production traceability; PN 42305-1 SN 00424 PN 42305-3 SN 30424 5.1.1.2 Supplier Serialization Number (SSN) Serial numbers for suppliers shall be formatted with a five character layout starting with an alpha character and followed by numerical characters unless otherwise specified by contract and/or QA. The serial numbers shall be assigned in alphanumerical sequence starting with A0001, A0002, etc. Alpha characters not to be used for supplier serialization are C, I, L, M, O, Q, S, X and Z. 5.1.2 5.2 Serialization Location Serialization of part shall be in same area as part number location wherever applicable, i.e.: As close to the identification as possible. Lot Serialization The following guidelines for Lot Serialization shall be used unless the drawing note has superseding instructions. QA will assign and record the Lot Serialization electronically in the Lot Serial Number Log. 5.2.1 Serialization of part shall be in same area as part number location. 5.2.2 Serialization marking method shall be the same as the part identification method (i.e. If chem. etch is required for part number, chem. etch is required for serial number, etc.). All parts manufactured in one lot shall be lot identified by that specific lot number. This is to provide traceability for a given lot that is processed at the same time (i.e. heat treating). The entire quantity of a given lot being processed through heat 5.2.3 Form No. F4.4M-5 REV 09/2007 TRANSMITTAL OF TECHNICAL DATA (EAR): THESE COMMODITIES, TECHNOLOGY OR SOFTWARE ARE CONTROLLED BY THE U.S. EXPORT ADMINISTRATION REGULATIONS (EAR). If the Vendor has additional parts that are heat treated but not completed, these must be identified with the same lot number as the completed parts. The serial numbers will be incremented accordingly. 5.2.4 The serialization shall be in the following form: L XX-XXX Example: L 5-1 First Part of Lot 5 Item Number of lot (Start with 1) Lot Number (Start with Lot 5) The alpha character “L” represents Lot Serialization for the Company. For unique Vendor alpha characters see paragraphs 5.2.7 and 5.2.8. 5.2.5 QA shall maintain a log that will record the part number, lot/serial number, and vendor. The first lot number shall start with 5 and be incremented by one for each sequential lot. Purchasing shall issue a new lot number for each new purchase order. If additional parts were manufactured with a previous lot/serial number these shall be maintained. 5.2.6 All documentation submitted to the Company from the supplier shall clearly identify the items shipped, by serial number. 5.2.7 If the supplier uses a different numbering system (i.e. bearing manufacturers) to identify manufactured components, a request may be submitted to include, the suppliers formatting of serialization for that item. The supplier must receive approval in writing from the Company before implementation of an alternate formatting. 5.2.8 Rescue Hoist and Winch Wire Rope Cable Assemblies shall be identified by the letter(s) as defined by the Company (example: C for Carolina, S for Strand Core, etc.), followed by the lot control number. 5.2.9 The Company’s QA will maintain a Serialization Log of critical vendor manufactured/vendor serialized assemblies. 5.2.10 The Company’s QA will maintain a log of assemblies for production and spares by recording the part number, serial number and Work Order number for traceability. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) will be serialized (but not lot serialized) as defined by the drawing. 5.2.11 5.2.12 Serial numbers shall be unique and Serial Number Log maintained by QA. As required by drawing note, all components of a Matched Set Lot shall be identified. Example: MSL 27-1 MSL identification may be performed in addition to any lot serialization. 5.3.2 Matched Serialization Location Serialization of part shall be in same area as part number location according to the drawing. 5.4 Supplier Serialized End Items (Vendor Item Drawings) Vendor Item Drawings requiring serialization will use a minimum of one of the Company’s serialization formats per Paragraphs 5.1 and 5.1.1. 5.4.1 Supplier Controlled Serialization (Source Control Drawings) If supplier does not have a serialization process in place, for Source Control Drawings requiring serialization, then a minimum of one of the Company’s serialization formats is preferred per Paragraphs 5.1 and 5.1.1. 6.0 6.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE In-Process Inspection Markings shall be inspected for definition, detail, dimensions location and conformance to the Engineering drawing and detail sections of this specification before final finish processing. Receiving Inspection must check the Certification of the Supplier Serialized End Items for possible serialization duplication. This is to safe guard against previously received items that may have been issued the same serial numbers. After Certification approval has been established the serialization must be documented on the “Receiving Inspection History” cards.
