Minister’s message
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 16th annual
Victorian School Sports Awards, a celebration of Victoria’s most
promising sports stars.
The awards recognise the highest level of sporting excellence
and highlight the exceptional talent and dedication thriving in our
government schools.
This year, 44 awards will be presented to primary and secondary
students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their
chosen sport.
Many past award recipients have gone on to achieve sporting
fame, representing Australia at world championships, Olympic and
Commonwealth games. Others have joined the esteemed ranks of
elite sporting clubs and the AFL.
Olympic gold medallist pole vaulter Steve Hooker, dual Olympic
medallist race walker Jared Tallent, AFL footballer Dale Thomas,
Australian Opals basketballer Jessica Bibby, Australian cricketer
Cameron White and Paralympian Ellie Cole all began their sporting
careers with a Victorian School Sports Award.
But these awards are more than just a celebration of sporting
excellence – they support the Victorian Government’s
‘Go for your Life’ campaign – which encourages healthy eating
and an active lifestyle for all Victorian children and families.
The health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable. With the
rise in childhood obesity it is vital that children are encouraged
to exercise from an early age. Sport and physical education in
our schools play a vital role in establishing the lifelong habit of
enjoying regular physical activity.
There are many unsung heroes, including parents, teachers and
community members, who work tirelessly behind the scenes
to help students achieve their sporting best. Their dedication
and support deserve our recognition, and today’s awards will
acknowledge their vital role in nurturing our young sportspeople.
Congratulations to all award recipients.
Your talent, passion and commitment are an inspiration to us all
and a tremendous example of the benefits of a healthy, active
lifestyle.

Victorian School Sports Awards
The annual Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolade in Victoria’s government
school system.
Presented for the first time in 1994, the awards recognise excellence across all categories of major
school sports and are given to students, coaches, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made
an outstanding contribution to school sport.
This year, 44 individual student awards, each known as a Sporting Blue, will be presented across 17
categories to young athletes for their outstanding success in 2009.
The origin of the Sporting Blue is based on the history of English sport, when in 1936, during a boat
race between Cambridge and Oxford Universities, a Cambridge oarsman tied a light blue ribbon to the
bow of his boat (the colour of his school, Eton College). A dark blue ribbon was then ascribed to Oxford
(the colour of Christ Church College).
Subsequently, a Sporting Blue became identified around the world as an accolade of sporting
excellence by young people, and is distinguished by a two-coloured blue ribbon attached to a
traditional bronze medallion.
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development believes it is fitting to present
Sporting Blue awards as a reflection of the high standard of talent and dedication demonstrated by
aspiring young athletes in Victorian government schools.

Master of Ceremonies
Nicole Livingstone OAM
One of the greatest backstrokers in Australian swimming history, Nicole Livingstone was a member of the
Australian swimming team for 12 consecutive years from 1985 to 1996.
In 1987, she began the longest winning sequence of any Australian swimmer in history at the national titles,
winning 10 consecutive 100m backstroke titles.
Nicole’s career achievements include a silver medal and two bronze medals from three Olympic appearances
and six gold, two silver and a bronze from three Commonwealth Games. She competed in six Pan Pacific
Championships, winning four gold, two silver and one bronze medal. She also broke a world record in the
200m backstroke (short course) in 1992.
Following her retirement from competitive sport, Nicole has thrived in her role as a television presenter.
Nicole has been active in promoting drug-free sports in Australia through the Australian Olympic
Committee’s anti-doping education program.
A great ambassador for Australian sport, Nicole was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in
June 1997, the Australian Sports Medal in July 2000 and was inducted into the Victorian Women’s Honour
Roll in 2006.
Nicole has recently joined Network Ten as an expert commentator on the new ONE Channel and as co-host
of ‘Thursday Night Live’.
