PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
Yesterday and today Judy, Sharyn and I are
interviewing applicants for a new Performing Arts
teacher to commence next term. The quality of
the applicants has been high and we will make an
appointment this week which I will announce in
the newsletter next week. A reminder that there
is a farewell morning tea for Sharyn on
Wednesday 24th April at 11.00am which is week
two next term. I hope that you can make this as a
grand farewell and thankyou to Sharyn for her 23
years of dedication to the students of Ss Peter &
Paul’s.
On Saturday we had a successful BBQ at Bunnings
Nunawading. Many thanks to all who worked on
the day and in preparation for the day including
Janet and Alexadra McCartin (a former parent and
student) who love helping at BBQs. If the
response of patrons is an indicator our school is
well thought of in the area. There were many
customers who asked us to “keep the change” and
a couple who didn’t want a sausage but made a
donation. Many thanks go to Di Censo Butchers
at Tunstall Square who donated all the sausages. A
very generous support for us and they are great
sausages, a generous size which cooked well
without shrinkage or splitting.
A reminder that enrolments are open for
Beginners for 2014 and that they need to be
received by Friday 17th May. If you know anyone
who is considering enrolling and cannot visit our
Open Day tomorrow please ask them to contact
me to arrange a personal tour and conversation.
I am taking a week’s long service leave during the
first week next term. During that time Judy is
acting principal Monday – Thursday and Peter on
Friday.
Recently Mary Hevern, who lives in Beverley
Street contacted me about her concerns regarding
a proposed development at 51 -53 Beverley
Street. Following is her correspondence about
this. If you are a local resident and have concerns
or if as a parent at the school you have concerns
you may wish to contact Mary and exercise your
right to object.
This Friday we farewell the Guyton Family
(Nicholas Room 2) from our school as they
embark on a new adventure to Abu Dhabi.
Please see further in the newsletter our mass
times for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter.
Please make a special effort to attend one or all
of our ceremonies over this special time.
Maria McIntyre
“I would like to bring to your attention that a
proposal has been posted by the Manningham
Council regarding a 3 storey development of 22
apartments including an underground car park at
51-53 Beverley Street Doncaster East. Currently
there is a large two storey residence on this site.
Many residents are very concerned at the impact of
this proposal and to that end a meeting will be held
on Thursday March 21st at 7.30 pm at 55
Beverley Street and you are invited to attend. The
purpose of this meeting is to discuss objections to
this proposal.
Objections need to be lodged in writing at
Manningham Council by 28th March 2013.
Bill Garvey and Mary Hevern are co-ordinating
these meetings and would be very happy to discuss
any aspects of the process with you. The mobile
number is 0417171734.
We would be very grateful for your assistance.
Thank you
Mary Hevern and Bill Garvey”
PRAYER FOR LENT
God of love,
I know that you are the
source of all
that is good and graced in my life.
Help me to move from the life of sin
to which I so often cling,
into the new life of grace you offer me.
You know what I need to prepare for
your kingdom.
Bless me with those gifts.
Amen

eSmart – Keeping children safe in our digital age
Our continuing work towards achieving eSmart
status will involve the whole school community—for
example, we’ll be integrating cybersafety into our
wellbeing policies, establishing clear procedures to
deal with incidents, and delivering curriculum around
the smart, safe and responsible use of technology.
We’ll regularly update you on our progress through
this newsletter. More information is also available at
www.esmart.org.au
and
http://
www.cybersmart.gov.au/Parents/Resources.aspx . On
this web page you will find separate links specifically
aimed at parents of 4-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds.
Restorative Practices
At Ss Peter & Paul’s School we use Restorative
Practices as a whole school approach to promoting
resilience and building and maintaining positive
relationships in our school.
Our focus is on helping our students become aware
of the impact of their behaviour on others through
personal accountability and learning from a conflict
situation. An important component is the focus on
restoring relationships after harm has been done.
Our overarching aim therefore is to create a safer
school, which is built on the development of positive
relationships amongst all members of our school
community.
Our goals are to:
Lessen the occurrence of conflict situations between
students and their peers and between students and
teachers
Lessen the number of times particular students are
referred for the same conflict behaviours
The principles of Restorative Practices are:
See every serious instance of wrongdoing and
conflict as an opportunity for learning.
Negative incidents can be used constructively to
build empathy and a sense of community in the hope
that there is a reduction of negative incidents in the
future.
Restorative practices must be systemic, not
situational.
Every attempt on an individual level to use these
principles needs to be well supported by the broader
system.
From the Library

We congratulate Pope Francis 1 on his election to the
papal office!
One can see that he has really read Jesus’ message of the
gospels. You just have to read the quotes attributed to
him (in the media), when he was Archbishop in Argentina.
“Jesus teaches us another way. Go out. Go out and share
your testimony, go out and interact with your
brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the
Word in body as well as spirit.” And he did! He lead by
example.
Having travelled through South America , and away from
the tourist routes, I was able to see the great divide
between the poor and the very rich, the “slums and the
glam suburbs” as well as the oppressive
repression that was imposed on the poor.
His Holiness spent time with the poor, urging his priests
to do the same and not live in the “trappings” of the
wealth. He cooked his own meals, travelled on public
transport (not by any means an easy feat—quite scary in
fact) and walked with the poor.
Watch and read future instalments that will definitely
come our way! It is with hope that he will bring a breath
of fresh air to the life of the Church and its people.
