Applications are being accepted in Human Resources for a Technology Support Specialist position in
Information Technology Services (ITS). The employee reports to the Assistant Director, User Services.
Responsibilities
Working with Washburn Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) administration and Information
Technology Services staff and administrators, provide leadership and coordination for support and
enhancements to the information technology infrastructure on the Washburn Tech campus.
Build and maintain desktop support systems which may include any or all of the following:
- Servers using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) for the use of mass software
distribution and network imaging of devices in office, classrooms and labs.
- Software packages to update security and features in SCCM.
- Assist and consult with System and Network Services to establish and maintain Active Directory group
policy and structure and manage directory access rights.
Track delivery, installation, movement and storage of computer equipment using inventory reporting tools and
a sound inventory control process.
Working with Washburn Tech leadership and staff to identify special needs, and employing ITS configuration
standards, create and update computer software images for placement on computer hard drives in Washburn
Tech offices, labs and mediated classrooms.
Install and support or direct student employees to install and support digital and IP-based telephones to
provide phone service for Washburn Tech employees, working with ITS User Services as needed to
coordinate service with Washburn University systems.
Monitor daily connections and operation of the IT system at Washburn Tech, working with ITS Systems and
Network Services to address issues and apply updates to support business continuity and provide ongoing
support for the Washburn Tech computer system and users.
Troubleshooting and Support
Troubleshoot hardware and software issues through diagnostic tests, Internet research and vendor
consultation, implementing the best course of action for resolution.

Work with vendors on-line and via the phone to obtain replacement parts. Install computer hardware
components to repair or update computers.
Research, analyze and resolve particularly problematic or complex issues as secondary support for student
employee/technicians and Technology Support Technician I’s as they are assigned to provide support and
assistance.
Work with University employees via telephone or in person to address issues with computer software,
hardware and network. Refer issues to other areas of ITS for resolution when necessary.
Other
Maintain records of daily activities including installations, troubleshooting and repair to track user-specific
issues, equipment maintenance and invoicing and for reporting purposes.
Schedule student workers. Assign tasks to students and follow up on assignments to ensure their completion.
Approve student timesheets to ensure accurate and timely payment for time worked.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Three years of experience performing desktop
computer installation and maintenance. Demonstrated knowledge of PC and/or Mac software and hardware
and systems support. Excellent problem-solving, organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
Current A+ certification or ability to attain certification within 6 months of hire. Ability to move equipment
weighing as much as 50 pounds on a daily basis.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced certification in networking, computer management or equivalent. Twoyear degree from a post-secondary institution in the area of computers or electronics. Experience supervising
staff or students. Experience working in an educational environment. Experience scripting and/or building
computer packages.
