Meet Michael Tomshack
By Pat Gordy
One of PSC's newest board members (as of April 26 - replacing Bob Edens), Michael Tomshack, is now coordinating the Photoshop Group classes to begin on
June 11. While the classes will be taught by Chris Oughtred of North Light Imaging
Services, Michael will be in charge of the logistics of the group meeting.
In 1985, Michael purchased his first SLR camera, which was a Canon T70, and he
proceeded to become a serious student of photography in 1999. He has since
switched to Nikon in 2000, and now uses D300 and D700 bodies, and has a wide
assortment of lenses and flashes. Using the Apple computer system, Michael post processes in Lightroom® 4 and Photoshop® CS5 (will be upgrading to CS6 when released).
People are his favorite subjects, and it showed when he recently helped with PSC's project of photographing the Upward
Bound basketball players and cheerleaders at St. John UMC. "I really enjoy using photography to give back to others. Like the
Upwards cheerleaders at St. John's, The Help Portrait Project, and several personal projects," says Michael.
With a general goal to continue learning the art and technical side of photography, Michael's goal in people photography is to
capture exposures in unique ways so that they, and those important to them, say, "you really captured __personality, thank you
so much..." Michael adds, "In landscape and nature photography, my goal is relaxation and to capture exposures that please
me. So, I concentrate on learning the gear at home so I can capture better images each time an adventure presents itself."
To expand his photography skills, Michael attended the "Flash Bus Tour" with Joe McNally and David Hobby last year in Atlanta, has been a subscriber to KelbyTraining.com for a couple of years, read many books, reviews the work of others, and
practices, practices, practices. A resident of Chattanooga for the majority of his life, Michael has worked for Morgan Stanley
Smith Barney since 1985. He did live in Nashville, Alabama, and Wyoming for awhile. Visit Michael's website: michaelktomshackphotography.com for a sample of his photographic work.
If you have any topics you would like to suggest for classes regarding Photoshop and Lightroom, please send Michael a note
at mike@chattanoogaphoto.org

2012 Youth Photography Showcase
Best of Show Winners
Annalisa D'andrea (left), from Baylor High School, took Best of Show in the YPS Digital Division and First Place in the Digital
Scapes Category with her image entitled "Lily Pads" shown left. With her "Sound of Music" image shown right, Morgan Koch
(right) earned Best of Show in the YPS Print Division, and First Place in the Print Photojournalism Category. To see other winners, go to http://chattanoogaphoto.org/Activities/Contests/Youth_Photography/youth.php
At the April PSC meeting, high school students who entered the club's sixth annual Youth Photography Showcase gathered (along with family, friends, and teacher) to find out who had won. There was a large crowd present to see the students with winning images come forth to receive their certificates, ribbons, or
checks - some got all three. First place in each category (there were 10 of
them - 5 digital and 5 prints) received $25 and the two Best of Show winners
(one in digital, and one in prints) received $50 each.
The winning entry in each category from each school, has been sent to the
Photographic Society of America to compete against other high school students worldwide. This was the first year that students have been allowed to
enter digital images (PSA rules changed) and the first year that the contest
opened to students outside the United States at the PSA level. Now the students wait to see if they place there. At the PSA level:

The most outstanding digital image and the most outstanding print image each earn a "Best of Show"
plaque, a $350.00 cash award, and a PSA Youth membership.

A $175.00 cash award and a PSA Youth Membership to both the top print and digital image in each of the four remaining categories.

A $50.00 cash award to the 1st Honorable Mention in each category for both prints and digital images.

A $25.00 cash award to the other Honorable Mentions in each category for both prints and digital images.

The top five prints and digital images, along with each maker’s photo and biography, will be included in the September issue of the PSA Journal.

The top five prints and digital images in each category will be displayed in a gallery on this webpage. Additionally,
the print and digital images that are selected to be shown at the PSA Annual Conference will be prepared as a slide
show and presented on this page.

Approximately 25% of the prints will be exhibited at the PSA Annual Conference in San Francisco.
In May or June, students will be notified if they have placed at the PSA level or if their images will be exhibited
in San Francisco.

The Holy Land (Part 1 of 3)
By Myra and Larry Reneau
We are blessed to get the opportunity to teach Bridge, the card game, on cruise ships. Therefore, we have travelled to many
fantastic places. Last September, we experienced Israel and Egypt. The first part of our story will focus on the Holy Land.
We will start our journey in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a Holy site for 3 religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The
Western Wall is the most sacred Jewish shrine in Jerusalem. The wall, known as the Wailing Wall, is the sole remnant
of the 2nd Temple destroyed by Rome in 70 AD. The men are segregated from
the women while entering the gates into Jerusalem, as well as when visiting
the Wailing Wall.
As you make your way into the Walled
City, the streets are narrow and cobbled
taking you back to a time long ago. Millions of pilgrims make their way to walk the
Via Dolorosa (Way of Sorrows) which was
Jesus’ final path. This route starts in the
Muslim Quarter, at Lions’ Gate and passes
the fourteen Stations of the Cross, ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
Several of the most important Christian relics are housed in this 12-century
church, including the anointing stone and Jesus’ grave. We were told that every individual’s Jerusalem experience is
different. There are so many sights, landmarks, traditions, religious preferences,
tourists and worshipers that it verges on overwhelming. You are guaranteed to
be amazed no matter what your beliefs. Sadly,
due to the world we live in, safety and security
for all is a major concern. From the photo of
the automatic weapons the young men are carrying on the open street you feel much reminded of this fact.
Next, we visited Dormition Abbey which marks
the site where the Virgin Mary is said to have
died, or fell into ‘eternal sleep’. The abbey is
the site of
the Room of the Last Supper, where Jesus ate
his last
meal. As we were leaving the abbey area, we
happened
upon a Jewish wedding that was concluding. It
is tradition that a wedding cannot be held
during the Sabbath (sundown Friday to sundown Saturday). We were there on a Friday
afternoon but it was not yet sunset. Experiencing how other cultures do things is always a
fun experience. In our travels, we have happened upon many weddings and we
find that very much a thing of photographic interest.
The Garden of Gethsemane was our next destination. Olive trees abound and flowers
were all in bloom. This too, is a spiritual place
as it is believed that Jesus prayed with his
disciples
the night before
his crucifixion. We did not
go into
Bethlehem but
were
shocked to see
the walled,
guarded gate
around this place we typically think so fondly of. Political
agendas surrounding the West Bank area are a harsh
reality.
One singular day in Jerusalem is simply not enough! The
rich history and wonderful cultures, buildings, archeological sites and the meshing and acceptance of varied religions is a site to behold. In our next segment, we will visit
the Sea of Galilee area.

Tim Grey’s Q & A
Today's Question: I purchased a new iPad with 2048 x 1536 @
264 ppi resolution. I would like to convert my photos in Photoshop to
provide the best viewing size and also minimize the file size. Once I
do this, I will put them in a file for upload to the iPad. Most of my
photos are PSD files in the 50 MB range, some are TIFF (also large
files) and a few are JPEG. What is the best way to convert my
photo files for iPad viewing. And, can I convert these files in a batch
process?
Under Image Sizing turn on the Resize to Fit checkbox, and set the
associated popup to Long Edge. Then set the size value to 2048
pixels (or whatever the long dimension of your device is), making
sure the popup is set to "pixels". The Resolution value isn't important. Using the Long Edge option (rather than Width & Height) enables you to display images full size when the device is rotated to
match horizontal versus vertical images (though obviously not all
devices offer this feature).
Establish the other settings based on your preferences, and then
Tim's Answer: You can actually prepare images for sharing on a
device such as an iPad (or about any other device that enables you perhaps save a preset by clicking the Add button at the bottom-left
and providing a name. That will make it faster and easier next time
to share photos) very easily and in a batch process.

image, which generally means identifying the pixel dimensions of
the display that will be used (or an average or typical size if you'll be
sharing images on multiple devices). As you note, the new iPad
features a display resolution of 2048 pixels by 1536 pixels. The prior
versions of the iPad had a 1024x768 pixel resolution. And of course
other devices will feature different resolutions.
If you're using Photoshop, you also have an automated tool available. I recommend starting by selecting the images you want to
