Joan motioned and Pat Smith seconded to approve. President’s Report Sandy spoke on behalf of Susan Scherber. “What can I do for this club” should be the thoughts when a club member considers their involvement with BGRC, and she wanted to thank people for all the good work accomplished this past year. She spoke about the “designer dogs” and how BGRC is advocating keeping the Golden Retriever as it is—a special breed indeed. Also, the GRCA will hold its national specialty in Asheville, North Carolina, October 24 through November 1. She said it is electrifying to participate and members should think about going. Joan reminded people to consider joining GRCA for just a $55 membership fee. Secretary’s Report Please sign in using the new BGRC Sign In Sheet at all meetings you attend to help with recordkeeping. Thank you to all those members who joined between 2007 and 2012 and shared their stories with us during the past year.] Jeremy Leverence: My dog’s name is Four Lakes Ishmael The Philosopher. His call name is Ishmael. He is my first Golden and only dog at this time. He is a 1 year 10 month old male dog who loves chasing birds, squirrels, rabbits, and deer. He loves playing with other dogs, getting in trouble, snuggling, and, most of all, food. The titles that we have acquired so far are: JH, CGC, WC, and RO1. We competed in the Bark River Dog Club trials at the Western Waukesha Dog Training Club this past weekend where we ran three UKC Novice 1 rally trials and passed with 94, 99.5, and 95 to get our RO1. We were very excited about that and hope that the upcoming AKC Obedience/Rally dog trials go as smoothly as this. Our goal for this year is to obtain his SH, WCX, CD, and RN. If time and money don’t run out before that, we hope to try our luck at a few more UKC titles as well. Training Ishmael happens every day! No matter what we are doing…cooking in the kitchen, shoveling the driveway… I test his brain by giving him random commands throughout the day. I take him everywhere I go so he loves the car and getting to do most of what I get to do during normal days. We have the most fun when we are camping or hunting! Ishmael seems to pay special attention to me when we are hunting pheasants or taking hikes in the woods. I also just began training at the K-9 OTC in Menomonee Falls to help me advance in the obedience/rally ring. I use the Training with Mike Lardy articles and videos to help me learn his method of training for hunt test scenarios. I don’t necessarily use the force, just the drills and handling tactics. The videos made the literature come to life which, for me, helped out immensely since Ishmael is my first dog that I am training to this degree. Seeing the training happen makes some of the drills much more obvious. (Continued on page 7) (Continued from page 3) Committee Reports a) Field Dan Feisthammel has served as the field director for the past several years. He demonstrated a decoy hook to show how to reach decoys without having to go into the water. The hook was purchased for the club and will be stored in the BGRC trailer. Several members commented on how they have experienced success with field training under Dan’s tutelage. Susan Scherber has contacted Bong Recreational Area regarding the hunt test that is scheduled for June 14 and 15. The WC/WCX will take place the second Sunday in August. It was suggested that another location be secured for BGRC field event fun day. b) Nominating Committee Anne Millane reports that no additional nominations were received and the nominations submitted will stand for today’s elections. These nominations include: Officers: President Josie Trad Vice-President Sandy Flaaten Secretary Anne Millane Treasurer Joan Kaml Board of Directors: Conformation Jean Taylor Obedience Jan Nyland Field Susan Scherber At-Large Chris Getter Election of Officers & Board (Annual Meeting) As the candidates are unopposed, it was suggested by Sandy Flaaten that a hand vote rather than a paper vote be conducted today. Bill McEachern moved and Pat Smith seconded that a hand vote be accepted. Motion passed. The new board was elected unanimously by hand vote/ayes. Election of New Members No new applications to consider for membership. Unfinished Business a) March 2014 BGRC Specialty a. Committees i. Sharon Long — Chairman and chief ring steward for conformation, Joan Kaml has stepped in for today’s meeting, as Sharon is not here. This year, mats are rented from Washington County 4H who will put them down and pick them up for a $500 donation. Setup will probably begin at noon on Friday prior to the show. Gates, tables, and chairs will need to be set up. Costs are more this year with a substantial increase. Electricity charges will be shared by the groomers who use it. Josie Trad will bring in the trailer from Sullivan to the show grounds. Linda Gensch is doing the ribbons, and someone is needed for hospitality. Cleanup crew is needed for Sunday afternoon to tear everything down and spruce up the place. Jean Granger had volunteered to run a decorations committee. Julie Strey Johnson reminded everyone that the contract should be read to recall what type of tape is allowable on painted surfaces. ii. February/March 2014 Page 7 (Continued from page 4) A little about myself… I am going to be 34 on March 1. I grew up in Mukwonago with the Vernon Marsh as my backyard. As kids we played in the woods every day that we could. Hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, skiing,… anything you can do outside, I still love doing it. However I am done with the latest cold streak we have been dealing with.;-) After graduating from high school I traveled around the United States with my pickup truck and a camper. After about two years I was a little wiser and decided I needed to enter college. I was 24 years old. At the age of 28 I graduated from UWStevens Point with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. These days consist of working as a water chemist and playing with Ishmael. We are looking forward to a vacation in April to parts of the Appalachian Trail and other surrounding parks. The summer can’t come fast enough!!! Sue Loucks: I joined Badger in 2013, even though I've been graced with this breed since 1981. I grew up with a miniature poodle, and saw my first Golden Retriever when I was around 7 or 8 years old and always wanted "one of those big, dumb gold dogs." My parents words, not mine! So in 1981, with two small boys, ages 4 and 1, my husband and I purchased our first Golden, for the astonishing price of $25. She lived until 12-1/2 and taught me all about those big dumb gold dogs and a love affair truly began. When she passed away, we got our second girl, a red bundle of energy that my husband said I needed to get into training...and fast. That was when I attended my first obedience trial and thus began my love of training. She received her CD but was diagnosed with severe HD, so that was a far as we went. Our golden boy Dylan was next and he lived until the age of 14. On a whim, I entered a photo of him in the Orvis dog photo contest, and he was chosen as a winner. After hearing his story, they started a joint venture with the Morris Animal Foundation to help fight canine cancer. Orvis' original goal was $50,000 but today they are approaching the $1,000.000 mark in contributions. I am still humbled that this boy's legacy is helping to find a cure for this insidious disease that takes so many of our beloved dogs. Riley, my current boy, is 3 years old and the absolute joy of my life. He has taken me on so many roads already. We participate in tracking and nosework, his two favorite sports, along with rally and obedience. He is also a registered therapy dog, and we visit nursing homes and schools. In the summer, we spend a lot of time at our cabin in Three Lakes, and he gets to spend his days wet, from morning ’til night, as he's always swimming. We often refer to our cabin as Doggy Disneyland. Besides dogs, I enjoy hiking — with Riley, of course — crocheting, painting, reading, and spending time with family and friends at our cabin. I have two grown sons, two wonderful grandsons, and the best husband in the world, who indulges any aspect of my dog obsession. Badgergold Update Almost 60% of our club membership uses badgergold, a private list started by Edell Schaefer in 2003 to enhance communication among members of our club. In midFebruary we emailed all club members information about badgergold. A followup invitation was emailed to club members not currently participating in badgergold. Our goal is to have 100% participation. If you have not joined and would like to receive an invitation, contact Bill McEachern at wmceach@yahoo.com.
