RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Dissertation: Effects of Telephone-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention on Fatigue Interference and Neuroimmune Function in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Department of Psychology, University of Miami Defended Aug 26, 2015; Chairperson: Michael H. Antoni, Ph.D. This project examined changes in fatigue interference and neuroimmune function in response to a telephone-delivered, 10week cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM-T) intervention in 95 female patients with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). This study was the first to quantify fatigue interference in this population, and to examine its associations with stress-related biomarkers (IL-6 and cortisol awakening response) collected from participants’ blood and saliva. Furthermore, this study will examined whether CBSM-T reduced patients’ fatigue interference, depressed mood, and neuroimmune dysregulation, post-intervention and 4 months post-intervention. Data were collected preintervention, post-intervention, and 4 months post-intervention. Data for this project came from a randomized controlled trial funded by the National Institutes of Health. PATIENT-PARTNER STRESS MANAGEMENT EFFECTS OF CFS SYMPTOMS AND NEUROIMMUNE PROCESSES, Department of Psychology, University of Miami Jan 2013 - May 2015; Principal Investigator: Michael H. Antoni, Ph.D. Research Assistant for a 5-year National Institutes of Health-funded randomized controlled trial evaluating the effect of a 10week patient-partner videophone-based cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) intervention on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) symptoms in 150 CFS patients and their partners. Responsibilities included intervention delivery, data management, screening and consenting participants, biological sampling inventory and materials shipment, payment tracking, statistical analyses of study data, and manuscript preparation. Supervised undergraduate research assistants and participated in monthly staff meetings. ELEVATED HEALTH RISK AMONG PATIENTS WITH NON-HODGKIN’S LYMPHOMA (NHL) AND THEIR CAREGIVERS: PILOT STUDY, Department of Psychology, University of Miami Dec 2011 - Dec 2012; Principal Investigator: Youngmee Kim, Ph.D. Project Coordinator for a longitudinal descriptive study of non-Hodkin’s Lymphoma patients and their informal caregivers. Data collection occurred at 2, 6, and 12 months post-diagnosis and included psychosocial questionnaires, blood, and saliva. Duties included training and supervising undergraduate research assistants, scheduling blood draws, and regular communication with the Internal Review Board. Additional responsibilities included managing data entry, conducting statistical analyses for weekly reports, and coordinating biological data storage and processing with partner labs. Daniel L. Hall, Page 6 Master’s Thesis: Adult Attachment and Coregulation of Stress in Romantic Couples, Department of Psychology, University of Miami Defense Date: Dec 2012; Chairperson: Youngmee Kim, Ph.D. This study tested the effects of physiological coregulation in romantic partners using a repeated- measures design with four samplings of salivary cortisol as outcome and one between- group factor (pairing of partner) to determine whether one’s HPA-regulated acute stress response is in part dependent on that of their romantic partner. Participants included 40 collegeaged couples. An experimental stress task asked participants to respond to a scenario wherein their romantic partner was experiencing acute physical pain. Salivary cortisol was sampled before stressor task onset, immediately after 5- minute stress task, and 8- and 18- minutes after. General linear modeling controlling for relevant covariates indicated that participants’ cortisol levels increased during the stress task and decreased after cessation. Attachment was not related to own or partner’s stress response. Awarded $1000 from University of Miami Department of Psychology to fund cortisol processing. THE COUPLES STUDY, Department of Psychology, University of Miami Aug 2010 - Dec 2012; Principal Investigator: Youngmee Kim, Ph.D. Project Coordinator for a study investigating dyadic coregulation of physiological stress in undergraduate dating couples.
