TOFIELD SCHOOL June 2015 Striving For Excellence In A Life of Learning Tofield Titans Newsletter Skills Canada Competition Local Student Competes in Skills Canada Alberta Shayna Reid, a grade 10 student at Tofield School, was one of 24 competitors in the Skills Canada Alberta Baking competition. These young and ambitious students were in a two-day competition to create a wide variety of baking products; some of which included a "Challah Bread," cream puffs and a decorated occasion cake. Congratulations to Shayna for placing 16th out of 24 students. An amazing accomplishment as a first year competitor. We know that Miss Reid will do even better next year as she continues to pursue her passion for baking. Graduation On June 3rd, 2015, the grade 6 classes will be celebrating their graduation from the D.A.R.E. program. Students participated in a series of 10 classes that looked at the negative impacts of substance abuse, discussed positive role models, bullying, peer pressure and used the D.A.R.E. decision making model to assess a variety of situations. The graduation ceremony begins at 9 AM in the library and will be finished by 10 AM. Parents are invited to attend! A special thank you goes out to Constable Christensen for all of her hard work! Students Choo-Choo-Choose to be Safe On Wednesday, May 20th, the grade 5 and 6 students enjoyed a presentation about CN Rail safety from Constable Solowan with the CN Police. The constable informed us of the dangers and precautions to take around rail yards, trains and tracks. Each student was encouraged to go home and share one piece of information that they learned, with a family member. Work Experience/Health Internship – students going into grade 11 or 12 as of September 2015 are eligible to take work experience during the summer. RAP (Registered Apprentice Program) – students going into grade 10, 11, or 12 as of September 2015 are eligible to take RAP during the summer. Any students wanting to report this summer’s work hours towards work experience credit in the fall must complete an application and hand it in to Mr. Daigle before June 10th. This information will be forwarded to our summer coordinator, Mr. Roe. Please see your school off-campus coordinator for more details. Deadline for signing up is June 10th, 2015. All students must complete and pass the HCS 3000 online safety course prior to any Off Campus work experience. Please see your Off Campus coordinator for details. This year’s musical is The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux is a hysterical musical set in a wacky hospital. With an abundance of zany patients, wild tunes and a hilarious plot, this musical will keep you in stitches all night! Lotta Cash, a wealthy widow, must be on the lookout. The evil Dogsbreath Devereaux, M.D. plans to marry Lotta so he can inherit her fortune and her late husband’s clinic. Helping him is the nasty nurse, Hilda Hatchet, whom he promises to wed after he gets rid of Lotta. Wild? Well, talk about medical mania when the insanely jealous Hilda catches Dogsbreath flirting with our heroine, Wendy March. We can only hope that Dr. Phil Good, our hero, can save Wendy and the unsuspecting Lotta from certain death. As they say, Nurses! Foiled again! The Dastardly Doctor Devereaux will be performed June 4 & 5, 2015 at the Tofield School Alliance Church Tickets are $8 in advance OR $10 at the door. Tickets can be purchased in the School Office. Whole Wheat French Toast Sticks 1 cup (250 ml) 2% milk 1/4 cup (60 ml) 35% whipping cream 5 eggs, beaten 2 tbsp (30 ml) brown sugar 1 tsp (5 ml) cinnamon 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract Pinch salt 12 slices whole wheat bread (day old) 1/4 cup (60 ml) butter Maple syrup 1. Cut each bread slice into 4 sticks; set aside. Whisk milk with cream, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a shallow dish. 2. Melt half the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Dip bread sticks in batches and add to skillet; cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side or until golden brown adding remaining butter as necessary. 3. Hold prepared French toast sticks in a warm oven 200°F (100°C) until ready to serve. Serve with maple syrup. Easy Granola Cups 1½ cups 375 ml Large flake oats ¼ cup 60 ml Wheat germ ¼ cup 60 ml Sliced or slivered almonds 2 tbsp 30 ml Butter, melted 2 tbsp 30 ml Molasses 2 tbsp 30 ml Brown sugar 1 tsp 5 ml Ground allspice ¼ tsp 1 ml Salt 1 tsp 5 ml Vanilla extract 1. Preheat the oven to 325 F. 2. In a large bowl mix oats, wheat germ and almonds. 3. In a smaller bowl mix butter, molasses, brown sugar, allspice, salt and vanilla extract. 4. Pour the molasses mixture into the large bowl and stir until combined. 5. Grease a muffin tin and divide the mixture evenly among 10 muffin cups. 6. Press the granola down into each cup and up the sides. (Tip: to get started, use your pointer and middle finger to push firmly down in the centre of each muffin cup.) 7. Bake for 15 minutes until golden. 8. Allow cups to cool completely before removing from muffin tins. 9. Fill with your favourite yogurt and fresh fruit.
