TOWARDS BUILDING A BETTER WORLD
A school is a wonderland of learning, a universal institution that initiates children into the first steps of knowledge
and instills and sustains in them the curiosity and passion to have a quest for learning and a zest for life, always.
And, as in every human endeavour, for learning to be effective and enduring it ought to be engaging and enjoyable.
We believe that every child is a reservoir of talents and, given the right environment and impetus, they will blossom
intellectually and holistically beyond our imagination.
It is these central tenets that continue to define and guide every thought and action at Dhirubhai Ambani
International School, in our pursuit of providing world-class educational opportunities to children. Our focus is on
building a school where learning is a joy, and teaching a pleasure; a school that places the child at the heart of every
endeavour; a school that makes learning meaningful and progressive; a school with an Indian mind, an Indian heart
and an Indian soul; a school that provides a robust foundation for children to grow into knowledgeable, creative,
compassionate and capable human beings and responsible citizens.
The School's motto Dare to Dream
Learn to Excel encapsulates our aspirations and the enormity of effort
required to bring about excellence in every facet of the School. Every element of the School resonates with this
philosophy: curriculum, pedagogy, recruitment, professional development, use of technology, co-curricular life,
international links, service to community, parents' participation, and so on.
The highest standards of excellence that the School has achieved so far, on all performance parameters, speak for
themselves. All these years, consistently across all the three curricula ICSE, IGCSE and IB Diploma our students
have achieved outstanding results in the board examinations, and our IB Diploma graduates have been accepted at
the world's top universities. Year after year, our children have also been excelling in a variety of sporting and cocurricular activities, winning prizes at state, national and international levels; while service to community forms an
integral part of the education at DAIS. This invigorating blend of academic accomplishments and all-round
development of children has placed DAIS amongst the league of top international schools worldwide.

The International General Certificate of
Secondary Education Programme
5. Some frequently asked questions:
At Dhirubhai Ambani International School one has the
option to choose between the ICSE and IGCSE streams. What
aspects should one consider in making this choice?
IGCSE
Find out what you can, about the ICSE and IGCSE Examinations at
Dhirubhai Ambani International School, by reading the
information provided by the School on its website (www.da-is.org)
and talking to current students and teachers. Students who have
studied ICSE and IGCSE are equally eligible to follow the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Dhirubhai
Ambani International School in Classes XI and XII.
If, after Class X in the ICSE stream, I decide not to pursue the
IB Diploma Programme at Dhirubhai Ambani International
School, what are my options?
1. The International General Certificate of Secondary
Although our Classes X students have the opportunity to seek
admission to the IB Diploma Programme in Classes XI and XII, the final choices are driven by considerations of their own plans about further
learning and future career preferences as well as the School's standards of academic performance / achievement and norms of acceptable
behavior. Those students who do not choose to pursue the IB Diploma Programme do have the option to pursue the Higher Secondary
examinations of the Indian education boards - national boards (ISC / CBSE) or the state boards (HSC) at another school / Junior College; some of
these students, post Class XII, may also choose to do a professional course in engineering, medicine, management and so on. It must be noted
that students doing their Class XII with Indian education boards also have opportunities to pursue their higher education with universities abroad.
Thus, certainly, an ICSE Class X student has many possibilities and options.
During the last ten years, about 30% of our ICSE Classes X students have joined the IB Diploma Programme at our School, while the remainder
opted to pursue the Higher Secondary Examinations of the Indian education boards.
How does an ICSE student stand to benefit specially from studying at Dhirubhai Ambani International School?
As a school that offers both national and international curricula, we are uniquely placed to blend the best elements of these different systems at
various levels. The school-wide professional development of teachers through conferences and workshops serves as an effective platform to
appreciate and share the strengths inherent in both curricula.
These help us to thoughtfully appreciate the curriculum requirements and pedagogical approaches at the higher classes and meaningfully carry
down and align them to the lower classes. We believe that this trickle-down effect greatly supplements our efforts of instilling in children an early
ability to develop research skills, think creatively, be self-reliant, as well as of creating an intrinsic excitement that will finally make them lifelong
learners. Thus, we are able to offer our students a continuum of learning and progression within the school, as well as elsewhere.
How does the ICSE grade a student's performance?
Education (IGCSE) Programme
relevant educational opportunity:
The IGCSE Programme is administered by the University of
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Over 10000 schools
in 160 countries offer the Cambridge qualifications. The IGCSE
Programme is firmly established and recognized world-wide and is
taken in 140 countries and in more than 3700 schools around the
world.
The IGCSE has always emphasized adding value within a national
context whilst also contributing to internationalism. The focus is on
safeguarding distinctive cultural identity through specific language
and literature syllabi, for example, or to include study of regional
geography or history, whilst also encouraging an international
outlook. Thus, the importance of an appropriate mix of global and local contexts is well recognized as an essential dimension of IGCSE.
2. The IGCSE Curriculum and its Assessment beyond knowledge recall, emphasizes a strong skill development orientation:
The IGCSE curriculum emphasizes the development of habits of critical enquiry and individual research and encourages a problem-solving
approach
Marks are awarded out of 100 for all subjects. The Council encourages a system of continuous assessment by the school and, therefore, all the
subjects have an internal assessment component of 20% marks in the form of project work, while the final written examination accounts for
80%. With respect to the optional subject chosen from Group III, it is divided into a Theory paper and a Practical component, with each being
assessed to the extent of 50% marks through internal evaluation and 50% marks by way of external evaluation / final written examination. The
standard reached in 'Socially Useful Productive Work' (internally assessed) will be given grades A, B, C, D or E; A being the highest and E the
lowest. A, B, C or D indicates a 'Pass' and E a 'Fail'.

applying what one has learnt. The assessment process goes beyond just knowledge recall and emphasizes other skills, including a
student's ability to use and apply knowledge appropriately, to handle information and use it to solve problems, and to acquire experimental and
investigative skills. This encouragement to go beyond rote learning or memorization is the key in all IGCSE syllabi. This approach recognizes that
'recall' is a less useful skill for individuals in today's world of rapid change. Instead, the development of skills of application, analysis, evaluation
and creation become important in encouraging students who are able to take their learning beyond the confines of the classroom and the
examination hall.
The IGCSE approach is rooted in active learning and its assessment models have been designed to reflect this orientation. They include not only

The ICSE Pass Certificate will be awarded to candidates who attain the 'Pass' standard in at least five subjects, which must include English. In

second languages, and project or coursework completed during the course of study. Throughout, the key criterion is 'fitness for purpose' and
skills are assessed in the most appropriate way possible.
IGCSE assessments are criterion-based and designed to be accessible to candidates of widely differing abilities. For most subjects, the IGCSE
reflects the approach of using tiered or differentiated papers, but within the simpler structure of a core and extended curriculum. The design of
the IGCSE curriculum and assessment recognizes the individual needs of students and provides encouragement of the highest possible
achievement.
3. The IGCSE Programme key features:
Provides an ideal foundation for higher-level courses such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, A Levels and the North
American APT (Advanced Placement Test);
Has worldwide recognition and is equivalent to the Certificate of Secondary Education from Indian education boards, General Certificate of
Secondary Education, and O Level;
Offers syllabi which reflect local economies and cultures within a global context, hence ensuring that students gain a wide perspective while
recognizing and valuing their own environment;
Develops key learning, problem-solving and investigative skills by encouraging an active, critical and questioning approach to study;
Ensures a broad-based education, while encouraging a degree of choice.

They include not only

skills are assessed in the most appropriate way possible.
American APT (Advanced Placement Test);
Has worldwide recognition and is equivalent to the Certificate of Secondary Education from Indian education boards, General Certificate of
Secondary Education, and O Level;
Offers syllabi which reflect local economies and cultures within a global context, hence ensuring that students gain a wide perspective while
recognizing and valuing their own environment;
Develops key learning, problem-solving and investigative skills by encouraging an active, critical and questioning approach to study;
Ensures a broad-based education, while encouraging a degree of choice.

4. The curriculum for the IB Diploma Programme:
IBDP students study three subjects at 'Higher Level' (HL) and three at 'Standard Level' (SL). They study HL subjects for a greater number of hours
(240 teaching hours) and in greater depth than SL subjects (150 teaching hours).
In addition, all IBDP students will:
Undertake original research to produce an Extended Essay (EE) of maximum 4,000 words;
Follow an interdisciplinary course on the Theory of Knowledge (TOK);
Participate in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) Programme.
The IBDP curriculum contains six subject groups together with the core made up of three separate parts. This is illustrated in the IB
Curriculum Model below, with the core at its centre.
1. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

course of study.
Originally developed in 1968 to provide a common curriculum and
a university entry credential for geographically mobile students, the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is now
taught worldwide. Widely recognized as the finest education a
student can receive in the final two years of schooling, its enviable
reputation for rigorous assessment gives IBDP students access to

The International Baccalaureate works with 3,909 schools in 146
countries to offer its three programmes (Primary Years Programme,
Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme) to
approximately 12,27,000 students.
2. The International Baccalaureate's mission:
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring,
knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
The following are the IBDP subjects currently taught at Dhirubhai Ambani International School:
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of
international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other
people, with their differences, can also be right.
3. The IB Learner Profile:
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of
the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

Inquirers
We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn
with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
Knowledgeable
We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas
that have local and global significance.
Thinkers
We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiatives in
making reasoned, ethical decisions.
Communicators
We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening
carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
Students choose a total of six subjects from the above 'Subject Groups', subject to the following conditions:
Principled
We act with integrity and honesty, with strong sense of fairness and justice and with respect for the dignity and rights of people
everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
(a)
All students are required to do English A (Group 1), Language B or a Language ab initio course (Group 2), and Mathematics (Group 5);
Open-minded
We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a
range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
(b)
Caring
We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of
others and in the world around us.
For the remaining three subjects, they choose one subject from among 'Individuals and Societies' (Group 3); one subject from among
'Sciences' (Group 4); and one from The Arts (Group 6). However, if they do not wish to choose from Group 6, they could opt for one more
subject from 'Sciences' (Group 4) or from 'Individuals and Societies' (Group 3);
(c)
Risk-takers
We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and
innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
Balanced
We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives intellectual, physical, spiritual and emotional to achieve
well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
Students have an option to choose an interdisciplinary standard level subject such as 'English Literature and Performance SL' (Groups 1
and 6) which meets the diploma requirements of two groups through a single subject. The student can then chose the sixth subject from any
of the groups, including a group already covered by the interdisciplinary subject. Only one interdisciplinary subject can contribute to a
candidate's diploma;
Reflective
We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order
to support our learning and personal development.
(d)
In exceptional circumstances, based on university requirements and approval by IB, applications may be made for candidates to study for a
'Non-Regular' Diploma, and choose three Sciences Physics, Chemistry, and Biology - from Group 4; in this case, they will not choose any
subject from Group 3 or from Group 6.
The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help
individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities.

(a)
All students are required to do English A (Group 1), Language B or a Language ab initio course (Group 2), and Mathematics (Group 5);
However, if they do not wish to choose from Group 6, they could opt for one more
subject from 'Sciences' (Group 4) or from 'Individuals and Societies' (Group 3);
(c)
Only one interdisciplinary subject can contribute to a
candidate's diploma;
