State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT November 18, 2010 ANNOUNCEMENT OF TENURE-TRACK FACULTY VACANCIES (3 positions) ASSISTANT PROFESSOR . The Department of Landscape Architecture (DLA) at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) seeks candidates for three faculty positions who place Landscape Architecture at the center of their pedagogy, service and scholarly activities. Ideal candidates will engage environment, culture and sustainability in design, planning and management of landscapes at a variety of scales. They will also function collaboratively with department, college, campus, institutional and professional colleagues in the pursuit of academic excellence in service to the communities and state of New York. Founded in 1911, DLA currently has more than 250 students enrolled in BLA, MLA and MSLA programs, and in a PhD in Environmental Science program managed jointly by DLA and the ESF Graduate Program in Environmental Science. The Department has enjoyed a long, successful and high profile standing within ESF and the SUNY system. Many collaborative opportunities exist for successful candidates, including those with disciplines at ESF (including forestry, biology, ecology, environmental engineering, natural resource management, environmental science and environmental studies) and with neighboring Syracuse University (including architecture, geography and public administration program at the Maxwell School) and with SUNY Upstate Medical University. Opportunities also exist to lead or participate in ESF sustainability initiatives in green infrastructure, stormwater/CSO reduction, energy use, food systems, resource management, socially viable and walkable communities, multimodal transportation, landscape management and landscape urbanism, all with an emphasis toward creation and revitalization of healthy communities. In addition, DLA houses Centers for Brownfield Studies (CBS), Community Design and Research (CCDR), and Cultural Landscape Preservation (CCLP). Department faculty have a long tradition of community engaged teaching and scholarship through which they have established strong relationships with community, not-for-profit, academic, and governmental organizations working on local, regional, state, national and international issues. The City of Syracuse is a mid-sized city centrally located in the state. The region possesses numerous physical, cultural and recreational amenities that make it a stimulating place to live. Its setting makes it ideal for pursuit of activities in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, St. Lawrence and Hudson Rivers, Finger Lakes, Erie Canal and Great Lakes regions. New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal are all within easy travel distances. POSITIONS ONE AND TWO: Responsibilities: 1. Teach entry- to advanced-level design studios, participate in the DLA Off-Campus Thesis Program and teach other core curriculum courses within the accredited BLA and MLA programs; 2. Contribute to student advising, mentor graduate students through roles as major professor and graduate steering committee member, take part in undergraduate and graduate curriculum development and participate in ESF and DLA governance and institutional service activities; 3. Develop and execute a clearly-defined program of scholarship leading to the creation of new knowledge or recognized creative applications of knowledge within the discipline; 4. Have strong professional practice skills, including demonstrable skills in digital production methods and the creation of digital content in areas of application common to the discipline. Scholarly activities are expected to complement the academic directions of the ESF institutional vision (www.esf.edu/vision2020/vision2020.pdf) and support the College’s mission to advance knowledge, skills and promote leadership in the stewardship of natural and designed environments. Preferred areas of scholarly interest include: • Emerging topics and applications in sustainable design; • Community and urban design; • History/theory/culture of landscape design; • Applications of digital methods and media to design exploration or practice; • Aspects of design and planning implementation at a range of scales and through public or private endeavors. Qualifications: Successful candidates must hold one or more accredited professional degrees in Landscape Architecture and have a terminal graduate degree in Landscape Architecture or a related environmental design or planning degree. Individuals with Doctoral level credentials are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will also have enthusiasm and demonstrable skills for teaching, an ability to embrace advancements in the practice of the discipline, and a record of scholarship or professional practice accomplishments that exhibit critical thinking which advances the knowledge or practice of the profession in the scholarly activities mentioned above.
