Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington gave the 15,000 acre Huntington
Wildlife Forest to the NY College of Forestry in 1932. Biogeochemical
and hydrological processes have been evaluated at the SUNY ESFoperated Adirondack Ecological Center at Huntington Wildlife Forest
since 1975 (see
http://www.esf.edu/hss/huntington_forest_research_overview.htm). Past
and recent research investigations include sulfur cycling, nitrogen
cycling, acidic deposition, carbon cycling, mercury, climate change, and
winter processes. Gaging stations continuously monitor stream
discharge at the major inlet (Archer Creek) and outlet of Arbutus Lake,
as well as two streams draining two small subcatchments in the upper
Archer Creek Watershed. Data recorded include meteorological
measurements at the Ackerman Clearing Tower and AEC, and water
temperature and ground water heights at six ground water wells. A
wireless data transmission network permits real-time data access. A

The Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System
(HRECOS) is a network of real-time monitoring stations on the Hudson
River Estuary. HRECOS is operated by aconsortium of many partners
from government and the research community and is funded by the
USEPA, NOAA, Hudson River Foundation, and the Hudson River
Estuary Program of the NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation.

The Hudson River Museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural complex.
The museum enhances peoples’ understanding of the art,
history and science of the region, and does this out of a commitment to
lifelong learning for all of its audiences.
The museum’s facilities include the Andrus Planetarium,
Westchester County’s only public planetarium; Glenview, the 1876
historic Victorian home; Hudson Riverama, a permanent environmental
teaching gallery; galleries for showcasing new exhibitions and
permanent collections, and the Joyce Greene Education Center.
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater

The 106-feet-long sloop Clearwater was built and launched in 1969 as
envisioned by folk singer and environmental activist Pete Seeger. The
sloop was among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based
environmental education aboard a sailing ship. Each summer,
Clearwater re-connects Hudson Valley residents with their cultural
heritage and traditions by bringing them down to the river for the Great
Hudson River Revival, the country’s oldest music and environmental
festival. The organization and its local sloop clubs also sponsor smaller
local riverfront festivals throughout the year. Clearwater’s unique
approach to public outreach has made the Clearwater a symbol of
grassroots action through hands-on learning, music and celebration.

The Hudson River Valley Institute is the academic arm of the Hudson
River Valley National Heritage Area. Its mission is to study and to
promote the Hudson River Valley and to provide educational resources

Valley Review and the management of a dynamic digital library and

stem. Research provides a solid foundation for all reserve programs in
education, outreach, training, stewardship and restoration. The Reserve
is part of the national reserve system and participates in the The Hudson
River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS). It
includes 5,000 acres in Stockport Flats in Columbia County, Tivoli Bays
in Dutchess County, and Piermont Marsh and Iona Island in Rockland
County. The Reserve is managed in cooperation with four other state
agencies: Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
(OPRHP); Palisades Interstate Parks Commission (PIPC); Office of
General Services (OGS); and Department of State (DOS).

Description
The Northern Forest Institute for Conservation Education and Leadership
Training (NFI) is designed to

in the Northern Forest

NFI is a multi-tiered, interdisciplinary program focused on professional
audiences, students in college and secondary curricula, and the general
public.
NFI operates the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb,
NY (formerly the APA VIC). NFI also oversees a 46-acre property that
includes the historic Masten House, perched at the headwaters of the
Hudson at the former Village of Adirondac, the southern access to the
High Peaks Wilderness.

Our County is part of the Hudson River Watershed and contains the
Moodna Creek Watershed, as well as parts of the Wallkill/Rondout, the
Quassaick Creek, the Ramapo River, the Wanaque River and the
Delaware River Watersheds. In partnership with Orange County’s
Planning Department, the Authority has created watershed plans, a
Stream Bio-Monitoring Program, a streamflow gauging program as well
as a Water Conservation Education Program for elementary, middle,
high school, and college students.
The Authority has produced numerous water resource studies, including
a County-wide Groundwater Study, a report on the effects of climate
change on Orange County’s water supply, and the Moodna Creek
Watershed Plan and Atlas. The Authority provides support for watershed
planning, intermunicipal alliances, scientific research and other critical
efforts to preserve water resources and drinking water supply.
