ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Environmental Health – Chemistry/Biochemistry The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse invites applications for an academic-year, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor Environmental Health –Chemistry/Biochemistry. This new position was created under a SUNY initiative to develop a BS program in Environmental Health, which will draw faculty from several departments. The successful candidate will join the Chemistry Department (http://www.esf.edu/chemistry/) as an Assistant Professor and will be one of the core faculty in the interdisciplinary Environmental Health Program (http://www.esf.edu/environmentalscience/envhealth/). Responsibilities: Duties will include developing an externally-funded graduate research program in environmental chemistry or biochemistry related to environmental health, and teaching classes in Chemistry and Environmental Health. The overall teaching load will be 3 courses per year, with at least one course in Chemistry and one in the Environmental Health core. Teaching assignments will be determined by the candidate’s expertise and interests and the needs of the Chemistry and Environmental Health Programs. In Chemistry, this could include undergraduate courses usually found in a chemistry curriculum (general, organic, analytical, physical, bio- and inorganic chemistry) and/or advanced courses related to environmental chemistry, biochemistry or health. In Environmental Health, this will include contributing to the orientation seminar series, overseeing and advising students through the senior synthesis experience and teaching one of the core courses: Foundations of Environmental Health, Environmental Sampling Methods, Environmental Health Management or Hazardous Materials Management. All faculty at ESF are expected to provide service to the college and their home departments and programs by participating in governance as well as professional service to the community and their disciplines. Required Qualifications: A PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related area with a strong background in Environmental Health. Preferred Qualifications: A record of excellence in research and teaching commensurate with time since obtaining the degree; postdoctoral experience relevant to the position as well as the ability to positively contribute to other programs and options within the Department of Chemistry and college as a whole. About the College: Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the nation’s oldest and most respected school dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies and building a sustainable future. The ESF main campus is in Syracuse, NY and has regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack Park. ESF consistently earns high rankings in US News and World Report, Forbes, Peterson's Guide, The Washington Monthly, Princeton Review and other national college guidebooks. About the Department: The Chemistry Department offers degree programs in biochemistry, natural products chemistry, environmental chemistry and polymer chemistry. The department currently has 17 faculty members distributed among these sub-areas and enrolls about 45 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. The department occupies the 6700 m2 Jahn Laboratory, built in 1997 specifically for chemistry research and laboratory instruction. Major instrumentation includes MALDI-TOF-MS, GCMS, LC-MS-MS, GC-EA-IRMS, LA-ICP-MS and ICP-OES capabilities, X-ray diffraction, and 300 and 600 MHz NMR, with an 800 MHz instrument to be added in the coming year. Other instrumentation, including both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and a DNA sequencing core facility are readily available in surrounding departments. The Environmental Health Program is a new undergraduate major offered within the interdisciplinary Environmental Science Division. Environmental health is the study of how people interact with their physical environment – the air, water, soil, plants, animals, workplaces and homes - in order to identify and possibly mitigate potential impacts on human health. The Environmental Health major will provide the training needed to obtain a position in the public health services, continue into higher degree health track programs (MD, MPH, DVM), or academic graduate work (MS, PhD). Based on a core program of foundational math and science, the program draws on faculty from several departments to add upper division focus on a broad array of environmental health applications. Seven key focus areas of study include: Built Environment, Geospatial Technology, Soils, Water and Wastewater, Soil/Hazmat Waste Management, Hydrogeology, and Food Protection. Students will undertake an internship and research experience to develop a senior synthesis project, making this a comprehensive undergraduate program.
