The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute and the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center will be sponsoring their annual conference titled,
“Courses in Neurological Management & Rehabilitation” from Dec. 5 - Dec. 8, 2013. This four day educational activity will commence on Thurs. evening (Dec. 5)
offering a choice of two concurrent interdisciplinary evening workshops, one on Evidence-Based Integrative Approaches In Rehabilitation and the other on the
High and Low Assistive Technology Including “iDevices”. This will be followed by two full days of focused courses, one on the JFK Coma Recovery Scale - Revised
(Dec. 6) and the other on Stroke Management and Rehabilitation (Dec. 7). The conference will close on Sun. (Dec. 8), offering a choice of two concurrent full day
workshops for PT’s & OT’s , one on Serial Casting and the other on Neuro Handling. Participants have a choice of attending any individual component or the full
four day conference (where applicable).

Description: Research evidence is suggesting that increasing numbers of patients are
looking toward integrative approaches to complement their traditional medical treatment.
Hospitals are also recognizing their potential and incorporating some forms of integrative
therapy approaches into their treatment programs. This workshop will provide insight into the
practice of mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR), yoga, Jin Shin Jyutsu® and nutrition
and how they are being used within the Center for Head Injuries and other components of the
JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. Participants will have the opportunity to experience
MBSR, Jin Shin Jyutsu® and yoga and leave with the basic knowledge to apply these
approaches in practice.
Description: This course will focus on the available technology to support stroke and brain injury
survivors. Participants will learn how to create low tech communication devices based on a
patient’s needs, including letter boards, eye gaze boards and simple picture boards. They will
also learn about higher tech options available on today’s current everyday technology. Options
for access will be explored for both high and low tech devices. Participants will leave with the
ability to create low tech communication devices and the ability to modify and/or use high tech
devices to accommodate the stroke population. Participants are encouraged to bring their own
iDevices, tablets, Smart phones, not so smart phones, and/or any other low tech devices.
Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Explain the concept of an evidence based integrative therapy approach.
2. Describe how mindfulness based stress reduction, Jin Shin Jyutsu®, yoga and nutrition
complement traditional western practices.
3. Experience hands on MBSR, Jin Shin Jyutsu® and yoga for the purpose of making an
appropriate referral.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be asked to self-assess the
achievement of these educational objectives.

1. Discuss low and high technology options for use with the stroke and brain injured
population.
2. Create simple low tech communication boards.
3. Identify appropriate access modes for low and high tech communication devices.

JFK COMA RECOVERY SCALE – REVISED: ADMINISTRATION & CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

DESCRIPTION
The JFK Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) is a standardized assessment instrument developed for the evaluation of individuals with disorders of consciousness. It is designed to
facilitate diagnostic assessment, monitor neurobehavioral recovery and assist in the prediction of outcome. It is intended for use in acute medical settings, as well as rehabilitation
facilities. The CRS was originally published in 1991 and the revised version was completed in 2004. The scale is currently being used in facilities in the United States and internationally.
The purpose of this seminar is to provide comprehensive training on the CRS-R for current users, as well as those without prior experience. The course will review the criteria for
differential diagnosis of disorders of consciousness (e.g. coma, vegetative state, minimally conscious state) and will provide training in the assessment, scoring and interpretation
procedures for the CRS-R. The course will include group discussion of discipline specific and inter-disciplinary treatment applications using the CRS-R. Where available videotaped case
studies will be illustrated. Audience participation is encouraged and will be elicited to facilitate the learning experience.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1.
Describe the clinical features associated with severe alterations in consciousness.
2.
Administer and score the CRS-R assessment protocol.
3.
Interpret neurobehavioral findings generated by the CRS-R relative to level of neurobehavioral and neurocognitive function.
4.
Outline and critique treatment interventions developed for individuals with disorders of consciousness.

STROKE MANAGEMENT & REHABILITATION – MEDICAL, SURGICAL, & THERAPY INTERVENTIONS
(Interdisciplinary Symposium)
DESCRIPTION:
This annual interdisciplinary one day course will provide an update on the most salient information and interventions in the forefront of stroke management and
rehabilitation. The conference will open with a discussion of the concept and rationale for Comprehensive Stroke Centers. This will be followed by a review of prehospital and emergency department care, also covering EMS education and Critical Care Transfer (CCT). The role of radiologic imaging in diagnosis of stroke will be
presented. A discussion on cardiac causes of stroke followed by approaches to the management of subarachnoid hemorrhage will be presented. The scientific
evidence with respect to comprehensive neuro critical care will be discussed and outcomes of this approach analyzed. Mechanisms of stroke and secondary
interventions in high risk patients will also be discussed. The morning component will conclude with an intriguing synopsis of what the presented evidence suggests
regarding the future of stroke care. The rehabilitation facets of the course will include a review of the research outcomes with respect to the timing and intensity of
rehabilitation interventions. Evidence-based approaches to spasticity management will also be discussed. Occupational therapy and physical therapy interventions in
the treatment of upper extremity dysfunction will be presented, as well as approaches to preventing injury in the hemiplegic shoulder. The far-reaching impact of
aphasia on all interdisciplinary interventions and most aspects of recovery of everyday functioning will be analyzed.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Describe the rationale for and the process, standards and challenges involved in the development of comprehensive stroke centers.
2. Discuss the pre-hospital emergency management of stroke, including critical factors in EMS education and organization, and Critical Care
Transfer (CCT).
3. Discuss radiologic imaging in the diagnosis of stroke.
4. Discuss cardiac sources of stroke.
5. Describe state-of-the art approaches to the management of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Description: This workshop will give each physical and occupational therapist an
opportunity to gain “hands-on” experience with the application of a serial cast. The
workshop will begin with a lecture focusing on the theoretical foundation and clinical
application of serial casting. The lecture will provide the prerequisite background
information necessary for the direct “hands-on” experience. Following the
demonstration of upper extremity and lower extremity cast fabrication, participants will
have the opportunity to fabricate one cast. They will then have a cast fabricated on
them and experience holding/positioning the limb of another participant as a cast is
being fabricated for that participant. A brief discussion of advanced casting
techniques will also be presented.
Description: This one-day introductory neuro handling workshop will focus on the treatment
and management of the adult hemiplegic patient. It will cover the use of neuro handling
treatment strategies with a patient during specific activities, including: bed mobility, sitting,
transfers, developmental positions, standing and gait. These treatment strategies will also be
addressed through lab sessions. The use of new technology, including equipment and
assistive/adaptive devices will additionally be covered, as it pertains to employing neuro
handling strategies. The current evidence for the role of technology will also be discussed. The
goal of this course is to provide the participant with a variety of treatment strategies, the
rationale for their use, and the progression that may be utilized in treating patients with CVA.
Educational Objectives:

1. Discuss the theoretical basis and physiological rationale of serial casting.
2. Identify indications and contraindications to serial casting.
3. Describe facets of the clinical application of serial casting, including material
selection and integration into treatment planning and patient evaluation.

5. Describe clinical application of advanced casting techniques.

65 James Street Edison, NJ 08818 The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute at JFK Medical
Center, was established in 1974, and since that time has grown
to become New Jersey’s most comprehensive rehabilitation
facility, with extensive inpatient and outpatient services. Its
programs are designed to address the physical, psychological,
social and vocational potential of each patient, with a goal of
maximizing independence. Aggressive Stroke Rehabilitation is
offered, including physical and occupational therapy, cardiac and
pulmonary rehabilitation, chronic pain, vocational and
occupational services, audiology and speech pathology. Created
in 1981, the Center for Head Injuries at the JFK Johnson
Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in Edison, New Jersey is nationally
known as a pioneer in head trauma evaluation and treatment.
Through a comprehensive continuum of care from acute inpatient
to outpatient cognitive rehabilitation, the Center for Head Injuries
restores real-life skills to those with head injuries so that they
may return to their families and communities at the maximum
level possible.

The New Jersey Neuroscience Institute at JFK Medical Center
is a comprehensive diagnostic, treatment research and teaching
center offering hope and relief to adults and children afflicted with
complex neurological disorders. In partnership with affiliated
JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, rehabilitative services are
provided for brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke and pediatric
and geriatric rehabilitation. JFK Medical Center is one of only
