PROVOXr Process Management Systems
Analog I/O Interface with CL6800-Series
Cards, Termination Panels, and Modules
CL6800-Series Analog I/O instruments are members
of the PROVOXr Control I/O family. They interface
analog field devices to SR90 and SRx Controllers in
PROVOX Process Management Systems. The
instruments consist of input and output cards, input
modules, termination panels, and cable interface
panels.
SR90 or SRx Controller
The cards convert analog signals between the signal
format used by SR90 and SRx Controllers and the
analog signals of the field devices. An analog input
and output card provides either input or output signal
conversion, while an analog input-only card provides
cost-effective input-only conversion for control systems
which use many more analog inputs than outputs.
The selection of input termination panels lets you
choose between single-ended or isolated analog input
signals and between simplex and redundant
applications. Output termination panels let you choose
between simplex and redundant outputs.
For isolated signals, a complete family of input
modules plug into input termination panels to interface
a wide selection of high-level, low-level, thermocouple,
and RTD signals to match your analog input
requirements.

The first combination for high-level inputs lets you
accept analog input signals from either traditional
analog devices or smart devices. This combination
gives you flexibility if you are transitioning your plant to
smart device capability. You can install your smart field
transmitters and use their analog signals now and later
use their full communications capability when you
complete your control system upgrade.
The second and third combinations for high-level
inputs let you select the appropriate ground system,
depending on whether the analog transmitter is
isolated or non-isolated. Other combinations allow you
to use millivolt inputs, RTD inputs, and thermocouple
inputs.
With the output selection, you can send output signals
to either transitional analog or smart final control
elements. If you are planning a plant upgrade to smart
final control elements, you can operate your smart
elements now and later use their full capability when
you complete your system upgrade.
Configuration
The analog interface is configured by ENVOX or
PROFLEX Configuration Software, or by the
microPROVOXt System. Each channel is configured
individually for versatile setup to your system needs.

The analog I/O card and the analog input card have
self-contained digital calibration capability. Cards are
shipped properly calibrated so that you need only
configure them to your system requirements. Factory
calibration data is stored in non-volatile memory in
each card and the card automatically maintains
calibration in normal operating environments. When
the cards are operated at or near their environmental
limits, they may require periodic calibration using the
Type CL6891 Analog I/O Calibration Adapter.

1.
Single-ended ground means that a field device ground is not isolated from the PROVOX system ground
2.
Isolated ground means that a field device ground is isolated from the PROVOX system ground
3.
The Type CL6859 module sets the Type CL6895 or CL6896 termination panel to the I/O card. You may use the 4 to 20 mA dc signal
from either traditional analog or smart field devices, but select the analog version of the Type CL68759 module to match the
termination panel to the Type CL6821 or CL6824 card.
4.
The module does not provide isolation. If isolation is required, consult your Fisher-Rosemount representative or sales office.
5.
Dielectric strength rating is measured between field wiring inputs and PROVOX system ground
Intrinsic Safety Applications
Analog I/O products may be used in intrinsic safety
applications. CL6340-Series termination panels and
CL6350-Series intrinsic safety barriers interface field
devices in hazardous locations to a PROVOX system.
These panels and barriers replace the standard analog
I/O termination panels and modules; they are not in
addition, so you can save on the number of cabinets
required for your I/O system. See product bulletin,
CL6349-Series Termination Panels and
CL6350-Series Intrinsic Safety Barriers,
BU4.2:CL6340, for a detailed description.

Current Design Termination Panel
Rack Units
Previous design termination panels are no longer available as a normal order item; they are listed for cabinet sizing purposes to show
rack unit comparison between the previous design and the currently available replacement design.
You may also use the intrinsic safety products of other
manufacturers. These products may add impedance to
the 4 to 20 mA current loop which must be taken into
account. A typical additional impedance is 180 ohms.
To help minimize your system costs, you may be able
to use one-for-N backup. In this type of backup, one
backup card can support up to eight primary cards.
The backup card need not be located in the same file
as the primary card.
Backup combinations are available, as follows:
Termination Panel Interchange
On-going termination panel enhancements provide
more space-efficient mounting. Many of the currently
available termination panels have less height than
previous designs and can be used as replacements for
the previous designs. See the Termination Panel
Interchange table above for replacement sizing
information. Electrical isolation methods may vary
between termination panels, so compare the electrical
ground information provided in the Analog I/O
Applications table with your field device ground
requirements.
Redundancy
You can choose one-for-one (1:1) or one-for-N (1:N)
backup to meet your process requirements.
One-for-one backup requires two analog interface
cards, two I/O buses, two multi-pair cables, and one
redundant termination panel.
An analog I/O card configured for input can be
backed up by a similarly configured analog I/O card
or analog input card.
An analog input card can be backed by an analog
I/O card configured for input or another analog
input card.
An analog I/O card configured for output is backed
up by a similarly configured analog I/O card.
If a primary card failure is detected and input or output
data is not corrupted when inputs are reported or
outputs are driven, both input and output values are
held at their last values. Switchover is bumpless for
outputs. Switchover for input is delayed to allow input
filters to stabilize for smooth transitions. Normal input
reporting and output driving continues after the
switchover is complete.
If the failure is detected and the data is corrupted
when inputs are reported or outputs are driven, a
bump of inputs or outputs at switchover may occur.

Redundant 1 for 1 Configuration
Several figures illustrate simplex and redundancy
configurations. Simplex Configuration shows a simplex
termination panel to I/O card configuration with
redundant I/O bus setup (not necessary, but
recommended). Redundant 1 for 1 Configuration
shows a redundant 1 : 1 I/O setup. Redundant 1 for N
(N = 2) Configuration shows one backup card for two
primary cards. Both input and output I/O can be
simplex or redundant.
Installation
Both the analog I/O card and the analog input card are
installed in the Type CP6701 Control Input/Output
Cardfile. These cards can be mixed with other
CL6700-Series, CL6800-Series, and CL6900-Series
I/O cards in the same cardfile. The cardfile is installed
on standard EIA rails located in a Type CP7010
System Cabinet or factory-supplied custom cabinet.

Redundant 1 for N (N = 2) Configuration
Termination panels are installed on standard EIA rails
in a Type CP7005 Half-Depth Cabinet, a Type CP7010
System Cabinet, or a factory-supplied custom cabinet.
These cabinets provide environmentally protected,
temperature controlled mounting.
Termination panels can be installed front and back in a
Type CP7010 cabinet for efficient space usage. For
this installation, front and back doors make panels
easily accessible. Termination panels can be
intermixed with other family panels wherever there is
adequate rack space on the EIA rails.
Since the interface card and termination panels are
part of the Control I/O product family, all of the
physical-distribution characteristics of the family apply.
The analog cards and termination panels can be
placed in a control room or placed outside the control
room closer to the process field devices.
An I/O bus connects the I/O cards installed in the I/O
card file to an SR90 or SRx controller. A multi-pair
cable connects an I/O card to a termination panel. The
I/O bus and multi-pair cables allow for local or remote
I/O locations. Termination panels accept twisted-pair
cable from field devices.
Power Failure and Recovery
A power failure involving the entire I/O subsystem
causes all outputs to be cleared to a de-activated
state. When power is restored, a power up sequence
returns outputs to the configured power-up states.
System response to power failures of individual analog
I/O components depends upon the component
experiencing the power failure and whether there is a
redundant or backup for that component. Power
failures within a cardfile only cause redundancy
switchover if the failure is a blown fuse on an active
card. Further information is available in Control I/O
family installation planning manuals.
Specifications
Specifications for accuracy, repeatability, operating
conditions, and so forth listed in the Specifications
table are the values for the complete input or output
signal path from the field wiring terminals on a
termination panel to the Control I/O Bus connector.
The path includes the termination panel, the modules
installed on the panel, and the I/O card.

I/O Card to Termination Panel Cables
A simplex termination panel requires one cable. A
redundant termination panel requires two cables: one
to the primary I/O card and the other to the redundant
I/O card (for 1 : 1 redundancy) or to the cable interface
panel (for 1 : N redundancy).
Factory specified up to 20 feet for cabling between
adjacent cabinets. If the cabinets are not adjacent,
specify the lengths below:
Cable Trays
All termination panels include a one-inch wide
horizontal cable tray for field-wiring. An optional
two-inch wide cable tray is available to replace the
one-inch tray. The wider tray, which mounts
horizontally above the panel, increases both the cable
capacity and the cable-bend area. Specify the optional
wider tray if desired.
