Gansu Natural Energy Research Institute (GNERI) is mainly engaged in the studies and
application of new and renewable energies and solar energy techniques in particular, national
and international technical cooperation and trainings, technical consultation and exchange,
new product research and development, solar technology promotion and transfer etc. GNERI
is one of the leading research institutes in the solar energy research field and also well-known
over the world. GNERI is one of the main founding member units of the China South-South
Cooperation Network, one of the “International Science and Technology Cooperation Base”
granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of People’s Republic of China in Dec
2007. At present, GNERI has become one of UNIDO’s agencies for technology promotion
and transfer, as well as an associated institution of United Nations University (UNU) within
the overall framework of the UNU Environment and Sustainable Development Program.
GNERI consists of 5 management divisions, 8 researching laboratories, 6 technical
consultation service centers, 5 bases under international solar energy center, 2 experiment
and demonstration bases of solar energy, 3 development entities and 1 professional solar
building design institute. Technologies and products can provide and cooperation include: the
Solar photovoltaic, the Solar water heater, the sun house, the solar energy stove, the solar
water treatment, the wind, countryside energy and biomass energy and conventional energy
saving technology, etc. 6 researchers of GNERI obtained the title of national expert; GNERI
has 20 more senior scientific researchers, 30more intermediate and 40 primary researchers or
staffs. Till now, GNERI has sent almost 20 staffs to USA, Japan, Australia, Italy, New
Zealand, Singapore and other countries for further study or cooperative research. More than
90 staffs have ben abroad for investigation, academic exchange and cooperative projects.
Since 1978, more than 160 scientific research achievements have been gained, of which
32 items obtained the award at national or provincial level. For example, the passive solar
heating technology for building won the national award of Advanced Science and Technology
which is the exclusive one in the solar building field, and this technology also achieved many
of the patents; 20 monographs and comprehensive tool books have been published, among
which “The Research Report on Application of Low Carbon Technology In Shanghai Expo”
in English has been published by Springer Press—one of the world's largest science and
technology press, and has been sold around the world. Besides, more than 400 papers have
been published on domestic and international publications or international seminars.
GNERInot only actively participates in the technology communication and cooperation with
developed countries, but also provides technical training for developing countries. When GNERI
sends experts to developing countries for technology assistance and technology training, also
funds staff to America, German, Japan, Australia, Italy and other countries for technology
cooperation, communication and study. GNERI helped Tanzania to develop a national five-year
plan of solar energy development, assisted Coted’ Ivories in formulating a countrywide
photovoltaic development and dissemination strategy, provided technical training on solar cooker
and solar water heater in Djibouti and Pakistan, and implemented the aid project of establishing a
solar PV production line in Cuba. At the request of UNIDO, GNERI drafted The Proposal for
Developing & Applying Solar Energy in Africa. As a specially-invited guest, GNERI has made a
presentation at “China-Africa Cooperation Forum: Ministerial Conference, Beijing2000”. Projects
which GNERI has implemented include: the first 863 megawatt solar photovoltaic power systems,
a national demonstration project under the National High Technology Research and Development
Program of China (863 Program); National Key Technologyin the 11th Five-Year Plan Period;
UNIDO international solar energy project; Sino-Japanese International Cooperation Project;
pivotal international cooperation projects in China; major provincial projects of Gansu Province,
and many other projects under the commissions of local governments or enterprises in China.
Besides these projects, GNERI also has extensive cooperation with U.S.A, Japan, Germany, Spain,
Canada, Thailand, Pakistan, Yugoslavia, Romania, Lesotho, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Sierra Leone for
technological cooperation; projects of solar energy, and some cooperation projects on solar energy
with countries in South-Pacific, Africa,Asia and Latin America are under discussion. Furthermore, GNERIdevelops a close cooperation with UNDP, UNESCO, UNEP,UNU, WB, ADB and
etc.
GNERI is located in the north bank of Yellow River, which includes poly scientific and
research building and training department covering 14,000 ㎡. The center is equipped with
accommodation,
catering
service,
multimedia
classroom,
transportation
vehicles,
communication network and other training conditions. It is also equipped with good
entertaining facilities such as karaoke hall, ping pang room and etc. The “Solar Energy
Heating and Cooling Technology Experiment and Demonstration Center ” covering 80,000
㎡ on the outskirts of Lanzhou city is also equipped with accommodation, catering service,

multimedia classrooms and good entertaining facilities such as karaoke room, ping pang
room, snooker hall ,tennis court, basketball court and etc. What is more, it has advanced
testing instruments for photovoltaic and solar heating techniques, and can serve as an
excellent platform for the research and experiment of applied technology.
By the support of Chinese governments at different levels, 90 domestic training
workshops have been by GNERI, with than 10 thousand participants from all over china
attended solar water heater , solar cooker, solar building, solar photovoltaic technique, energy
saving and coal or firewood saving stove workshops. By the support of the ministry of
commerce of PRC, the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC, the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of PRC, United National and relevant international organizations, GNERI has held
“International Solar Energy Application Technology Training Workshop” over 55 times in
English, French, Arabic, Russian and other languages, and trained more than 1400 solar
energy talents for 121 countries crossing over the five continents from 1991 to 2014.so far,
more than 20 participants and their agencies have signed cooperation agreements with
GNERI, and under the support of Chinese government, some of the agreements have become
the international cooperation programs, such as China-Kenya solar PV and solar water
heater system demonstration program and China-Thailand Solar condition research and
development program. The international trainingprograms of GNERI not only cultivate the
renewable talents for developing countries, but also play an active role in strengthening the
friendship between China and developing countries.
Entrusted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Ministerial
Seminar on Solar Energy Development and Utilization for Developing Countries will be held in
Lanzhou, Gansu from 05/08/2015—11/08/2015 by Gansu Natural Energy Research Institute
(GNERI). English is used as working language of this program.
The seminar will involve the seminar, field visits and trade discussion to promote the global
low-carbon economy and the transfer of solar and other sustainable development technology and
products, to seek the effective way for cooperation and business with the other developing
countries in solar energy and other renewable energy field, to help other developing countries in
solving the difficulties and challenge in developing the new energy industry, and to promote the
sustainable development of economy and society for all the developing countries including China.
We will invite Chinese famous experts in solar field, policymakers and industry manufacturers to
discuss and exchange views with all the ministers in the field of Chinese solar energy and other
renewable energy policy, development strategy, advanced technology and high quality products.
During the seminar, we will share Chinese experience accumulated over the years in the
field of new energy, the future development strategy and reform measures withministers. At the
same time, we will also learnadvanced technology, experience and achievement from other
developing countries in the field of solar energy and other renewable energy.
In the seminar, the participants will be arranged to visit solar and other renewable energy
enterprises, and inspect typical implementation case projects in Gansu Province and Beijing so as
to know about the research, development and application of solar and other renewable
technologies in China as well as the products market.
