Coal Valley
Days
is back!
July 7, 8, 9
By Stephen Mullen, Director of Water & Sanitary Sewer Systems
The Village of Coal Valley will be conducting hydrant
flushing April 11th to the 22nd. Hydrant flushing flushes
sediments from mainline pipes
(which enhances water quality),
verifies the proper operation of
fire hydrants and valves, helps
find weaknesses in the water
system, checks for closed
valves and weak flows in the
water mains, and verifies ample
flow for firefighting.
During hydrant flushing
there may be a temporary drop
in water pressure at this time.
Water may be rusty or cloudy.
Discolored water is not harmful
Stephen Mullen
and will clear up in a few hours.
Fill a bottle with water and store it in the refrigerator to use
for drinking or cooking. Flush your hot water tanks after
the cold water clears. Do not wash white laundry during
this period (wait until cold AND hot water are clear before
laundering whites). If you see a crew flushing a hydrant on
your street, avoid running tap water and using the washing
machine or the dishwasher until the flushing is completed.
If you see hydrant flushing crews working in the area,
please drive carefully and treat them like any other road
construction crew.
If tap water is used during flushing, it could come out
full of sediment that causes discoloration. When a hydrant
is opened, there will be temporary incidences of discolored
water while fine sediment particles are flushed out. There
is no health hazard associated with the discolored water.
Allow a few hours for discoloration to dissipate.
To verify water is clear, run your cold-water tap for a few
minutes. If you encounter discolored water, shut the water
off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity
by running cold water for a few minutes allowing new water
to work its way into your pipes. If the water is clear it’s OK
to use. If not, wait a few more minutes and check again.
In some cases, there may be slight discoloration for a
few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of
the water; it does not affect the taste or water quality. Avoid
washing laundry during scheduled flushing times. Wait until
the water runs clear at the tap, then wash a load of dark
clothes first. Hot water tanks can hold discolored water for
some time after the cold water runs clear. If pressure or
volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped

Spring is here! Watch for
farmers on our rural roads
Submitted by Drue Mielke. source: Southwest Farm Press
Spring is here and gardeners around the village as well as
golfers at Oakwood are getting ready. Also, our area farmers that
adjoin our village and make up part of our larger community are
getting into the fields and gearing up for spring planting.
When driving on our rural roads around our village like West
4th Avenue (78th Avenue going into Coal Valley Township) or be it
Oak Glen Road, E. 3rd Street, or any of the highways, be alert for
slow moving farm implement.
Be sure to use caution when passing watching for oncoming
traffic and of other vehicles that may try
to pass. Never pass when curves or hills
block your view of oncoming vehicles, in
a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an
intersection.
Be aware that the farmer may be about
to make a wide left turn.
Be curtious. Farmers are trying to
slow you down. They are making a living
and providing our nation with the most
important item- food. Whenever possible,
farmers will pull off the road to allow others
to pass.
Slow down when you see the orange
triangular Slow Moving Vehicle emblem
warns drivers of a slow vehicle. All farm equipment traveling at
speeds of 25 mph or less are required to be marked with an SMV
emblem. Once you see it, slow down immediately.
Don’t assume the farmer knows you are driving near his vehicle.
Although most farmers check behind them whenever possible, they
are concentrating on keeping their equipment on the road and
avoiding oncoming traffic. Before you pass, use your car’s horn to
let the driver know where you are. Farmers may not be able to hear
you over their equipment noise.
Yield to wide vehicles: Sometimes farm equipment is wider
than travel lanes. If you approach wide equipment and cannot pass
safely, stop. Watch for pilot or escort cars, which help to indicate an
oversized vehicle. If you see one, pull off so the vehicle can pass
you.

A surprise phone callCoal Valley Days is back
It was Wednesday, January 13th, I was riding in
the car, working on my laptop for work, on my way to
Springfield for the annual Illinois Association of Agricultural
Fairs (IAAF) convention when my cell phone rang. It was
longtime Coal Valley resident, Scott Parsons, of Coal
Valley Days fame. You may also know Scott as one of
the many friendly, smiling faces at the Shell gas station
downtown Coal Valley on U.S. 150.
Scott told me he had good news Coal Valley Days is back for 2016. He was able to
secure a carnival and the dates will be July 7, 8, and 9,
2016.
Everything is in the planning stage, but getting a
carnival booked is the biggest piece, so kudos to Mr.
Parsons for getting this done. The Carnival is C.D.A.C.
and I made a point to visit them at the IAAF convention
I was attending, which is a must for county fairs and
events like Coal Valley Days. As luck would have it, while
I was there, I ran into the Rock Island County Fair Board
members too. Nice people.
Will there be a parade for the kids in the village? To
make this happen, Coal Valley Days will need volunteers
to make this a reality.
Volunteers are a must for this wonderful, Coal Valley
community event to happen. I have volunteered for the
Beer and Pop Tent again this year, already. It’s a great
way to talk to everyone because in the summer, everyone
is thirsty!
Without volunteers, Coal Valley Days won’t
happen, as we discovered last year! If you would
like to get involved with this great community event,
please contact Mr. Scott Parsons at lottafunhouse@
yahoo.com.
