Safety demands IEC 61010-1
As a professional user of test- and measuring equipment, your instruments must fulfill
current norms and guidelines. This includes CE standard, EMC and IEC10101/EN61010-1. Especially when measuring voltage and current is to be measured, it’s
important to fulfill IAC 1010-1 for correct category. This information are applied to all
relevant instruments, for example IEC 1010-1 CatIII 300V. Please be aware that the indi-

cated voltage is not the maximum voltage to be measured, but the maximum potential to ground. This will be 230V in standard household installations. The Low voltage
directive (LVD) describes safety required when measuring. If the equipment fulfill
IEC61010-1 / EN61010 and corresponding category, the LVD is said to be fulfilled.

Note: The indicated voltage is the maximum allowed potential between the instrument and neutral ground. Ie. that a 300V instrument can be used to measure 400V line to line voltage, because the potential to neutral ground is only 230V.
Methods of measuring – ground resistance
It’s important to verify the resistance to ground. Worst case scenario is injury or death, if the resistance to ground is not ok.
There are values and norms to fulfill. Therefore it’s important to be able to test and measure all connections and resistance to ground. When measuring the resistance of
earth bonds, one of the below methods are typically used.

GOOD TO KNOW - EARTH LOOP RESISTANCE
GOOD TO KNOW - THREE CONNECTION MEASUREMENT
This method demands a connection to line and neutral, as it is the earth bond of the
grid that are used as reference. Known as the two connection earth loop measurement.
The 62% method is the most precise method to measure resistance to earth. The
distance from E to H must be at least 5 times the length of the earth rod. For example if the rod is 2 meters in the ground, the distance between E and H must at least
be 10 meters. The distance from E to S is 62% of the total distance, in this example
6,2 meters.
It’s as easy and fast method, and no external probes are needed. The loop is measured through the grid and the transformer grounding. That means that the value will
typically be slightly higher than the clean resistance to earth from the rod.
Note: In large earth systems the diameter of the earth system is to seen as the length
of the earth rod.
Because of this the method is not suitable if a precise resistance is required.
Be aware that the result should be stable, if controlled by moving the S rod to 10%
more and then 10% less than 62%.

GOOD TO KNOW - EARTH RESISTIVITY
SCHLUMBERGER METHOD
The earth rod should be established where the earth conductivity is best. This can be
controlled by using the Wenner or the Schlumberger method. The unit for this type of
measurement is Ohmmeter. The CA6472 (page 61) automatically calculate the result,
the only information necessary for the instrument is the distance between the rods.
Used to determine the vertical conductivity and if it would be an advantage to extend
the rod deeper in the ground. When the distance between the outer rods, E and H is
extended, the measuring depth is extended.
The distance between the inner rods is A.
WENNER METHOD
Used to define the lateral placement of the earth rod. This identifies the best place
along a line to place the rod. The distance D between the rods must be the same.
