Notebooks, backpacks, crayons, markers…the list goes on! We can all remember what it was like to open that new box of crayons on the first day of school and the colorful new folders for homework and bringing home projects that you completed. The Social Action Group has an annual school supply drive in hopes of packing enough school supplies to pack 75 backpacks. We then deliver them to the schools in the West Fargo School District. Your generous efforts have helped so many children over the years. A new box of crayons can be quietly slipped to the student who doesn’t have one. A bottle of glue can be given to a student who never gets the empty one replaced. The student who only has 1 notebook can be given another one. Scissors that have gone lost or funds weren’t available to buy can be offered. Sometimes families go through medical and financial hardships and the school supply list of the broken, lost or used up school supplies gets lost in a sea of bills and forgotten about when families are dealing with a crisis. Sometimes kids don’t even ask and do without because they know there is barely money for food and they don’t want to ask for that new bottle of glue. What you donated can then be given to help the children with their needs and help eliminate some of the stress and worry at home.. Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you……….. For the back pack that you bought on clearance for $5 or the full priced one for $25. The school supplies you bought because your own kids are gone and have all grown up and you miss shopping for school supplies. The $5 cash or the check you put into an envelope marked School Supplies so we would supplement what we could use more of. The 20 bottles of glue you bought when you walked by and saw they were .10 each. Your $2 made 20 children’s hearts soar! You have been so helpful and generous in the past and we look forward to organizing the school supply drive again this year! July 17 through July 31 are the dates for this year. James Meyer as the new Associate Pastor for Holy Cross Parish. It is with great joy that I am writing to you, to announce in my own way, my return to your beautiful parish. Some of you may remember me from my service in the parish over this past summer, and for many of you I do not need to give an introduction. However, I would like to write a brief introduction for the new parishioners who may have joined our community since I left Holy Cross to finish my final year of school or those I may not have had time to meet in the three months I served at the parish following my ordination last June. So here it goes… I am twenty-nine years old, and the second of five boys. I was born in Mt. Morris, Michigan, where I lived for ten years. I attended middle school and high school in Sylvania, Ohio where my parents Bill and Charlotte still live. My brothers are: Jason (36), Matthew (27), Tyler (19), and Johnathan (15). My older brother Jason, and my younger brother Matthew are married to two great gals. Both live in the Twin Cities with their growing families. After graduating from High School in 2005, I moved to St. Paul, Minnesota to attend the University of St. Thomas (UST). During my first year at UST, I began to re-encounter my faith, both in my studies and in a weekly adoration hour. After this first year I attended a priestly ordination in Fargo, and it was at this ordination that I first thought about being a priest. In the Fall of 2007, I began this long journey to priesthood, which has afforded me much joy and happiness. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas in 2009, I came to Fargo and began to study for this beautiful diocese. After a year studying in Denver Colorado, at St. John Vianney Seminary, I was asked by Bishop Aquila to go to Rome to complete my preparation for priestly ministry. I was ordained a priest of Jesus Christ on June 27th, 2015, and began a three-month assignment at Holy Cross Parish. In September of last year, I returned to Rome to finish my studies (or as Fr. Jim likes to say I needed to go back to “remedial school”). Currently, I am finishing my work on a License in Moral Theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana. This degree would permit me to teach, write for the New Earth, work in a seminary, or whatever the bishop wants. With the grace of God, I am finishing up my fifth and final year of studies in Rome, and I am excited to return home to begin work in parish ministry. Two of my favorite hobbies are reading (especially non-fiction literature) and cooking. In High School I played lacrosse, and ran on the cross-country team, and to this day I consider myself a runner (although I am much, much slower). I studied drafting and design, and took nine years of art lessons, and although I am really rusty, I like to paint and sketch when I have free time. I also like to listen to music. My tastes vary from year to year, but I have to confess that nothing can really beat the Rolling Stones. I would like to thank you all for the sincere and generous welcome I received in your parish during my first months of priesthood, and I am eagerly awaiting my return to West Fargo. Although my assignment does not begin until the 29th of June, pleased be assured of my prayers for you all! May God bless you, and as we say here in Italy, Ci vediamo fra poco! (we will see each other very soon!) --Fr. William Slattery Welcome Seminarian Jayson Miller! We welcome seminarian Jayson Miller, who will be with us at Holy Cross for the summer. A little about Jayson: I grew up north east of Devils Lake, ND on my family's farm. At home, I helped on the farm as well as played basketball and baseball in Devils Lake. After graduating high school in 2006, I attended Valley City State University to study Exercise Science and play on the baseball team. I decided to transfer to NDSU after freshman year at VCSU and shortly into my sophomore year at NDSU I began to get involved at St. Paul's Newman Center. Several priests encouraged me to attend a Live -In Weekend at Cardinal Muench Seminary, which I did, and shortly after applied to enter CMS. After finishing at Cardinal Muench with a bachelor in Philosophy and minors in History and Classical Languages, I left the seminary and joined FOCUS (The Fellowship of Catholic University Students). I served at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years, before applying to enter Major Seminary at St. Paul Seminary, where I have studied for the past three years. I am very excited to be ordained a deacon and serve at Holy Cross this summer!
