In order to increase our knowledge about employment opportunities in non-NHS hospitals, the University of Sheffield Careers Service approached 136 independent hospitals/providers in January 2007, with a request to complete a questionnaire about their recruitment practices. 44 institutions (32%) replied to the survey and the information they supplied is presented in the following pages. AIMS OF THE SURVEY The aims of the survey were: § To draw up a comprehensive list of independent hospitals, together with their contact details. § To gather information about the recruitment practices of individual independent healthcare providers. 2 SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON INDEPENDENT HOSPITALS The following information sources were used in order to identify independent hospitals: Healthcare Commission http://www.healthcarecommission.org.uk/serviceproviderinformation/independenthealthcare privateandvoluntary/independenthealthcaredetail.cfm?cit_id=469 Private Healthcare UK http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/private-hospitals/hospitaltreatment-companies Independent Healthcare Advisory Services: http://www.independenthealthcare.org.uk/links.html CareHealth http://www.carehealth.co.uk/ Check the Map http://www.checkthemap.org/ SpecialistInfo.com http://www.specialistinfo.com/directory.php Netdoctor.co.uk http://netdoctorhospitalguide.drfoster.co.uk/objectlist.aspx?w=25 Standard Life Healthcare http://www.adviserzone.com/pdf_library/slh1441.pdf Many of the institutions identified are individual independent hospitals, particularly those catering for people with mental health problems or learning difficulties. Others, however, are large chains of hospitals, especially in medical/surgical/acute care. Companies appear often to take over others, with the sub-company sometimes retaining the original name, leading to a somewhat confusing picture. Some of the large chains, with numbers of hospitals in brackets, are: Medical/surgical/acute – BMI (50), BUPA (25), Capio (21), Nuffield (40), Classic (9) Mental health – Priory Group (18) Mental health/Learning disability – Castlebeck (9). Approximate number of hospitals of different types: Medical/surgical/acute Mental health Learning disability 207 118 10 3 Learning disability /mental health 26 SUMMARY LIST OF INSTITUTIONS CONTACTED Abbey Hospitals ADAPT Ann Moss Domus Aspen Healthcare Ltd Bigfoot Independent Hospital Blenheim Specialists in Mental Health Brook House BUPA Hospitals Ltd Cambian Healthcare Ltd.
