Holy Cross High School Volume 27 Issue 2 February 2014 SISTER CARMELLA DIES AT 104 Another legend has passed on. Sr. Carmella Azzolina died on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at the age of 104. Sr. Carmella entered the Benedictine Order in 1934 at the age of 25 and celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (75 years) in 2011. She taught at Villa Madonna for 22 years before coming to Holy Cross, where she would remain for 27 years. In 2006, Sister Carmella and Sr. Samuel moved back to the convent for their retirement years. Shortly before Thanksgiving (2013) , Sr. Carmella fell and was admitted to the hospital. She returned to the infirmary at St. Walburg Convent under hospice care, where her condition slowly deteriorated. She died peacefully on December 8. Sister Carmella is fondly remembered by many of us. In her 27 years at Holy Cross, Sister taught mostly foreign language. Later in her tenure, she worked in the library and covered study halls. Sr. Carmella received many visitors from Holy Cross—many classes were known to treat the sisters to lunch once a month! Sr. Carmella and Sr. Samuel made a huge impact on Holy Cross High School and will be remembered fondly by all of us. We are happy to say that they are no doubt—together again—and enjoying every minute of their newfound happiness. Upcoming Activities Saturday, February 1 Denim & Diamonds Scholarship Auction Dinner Friday, February 14 Night at the Races 7:00 - midnight Week of February 17 Boys and Girls District Basketball Tournaments Thurs.—Sun., Feb. 20-23 “Annie Get Your Gun“ at Carnegie Friday, March 21 Jr. Class Bingo (cafeteria) MAKING THE MOST OF AN HC EDUCATION Fri-Sun., March 28 -30 Alumni Basketball Tour. Quite a few Holy Cross High School students are taking advantage of the college course opportunities that are being offered to them, and their parents could not be happier! We tracked a recent HC graduate who had taken college courses at Holy Cross in Biology, American History, Calculus, Foreign Policy and AP English and earned 22 college credit hours prior to graduating from HC! As a student at Holy Cross, the fees for the credit hours are greatly reduced - a college course would cost between $280—$1100 per credit hour plus books at local colleges, but can be taken for approximately $57 per credit hour at Holy Cross. In this instance, this college freshman had enough hours after her first semester to be classified as a sophomore. Because of the association with local colleges and members of the Holy Cross faculty who are professors at these colleges or who have taught previously at the college level, these opportunities are available for our students without leaving Holy Cross. Thanks again to our dedicated teachers! Friday, April 11 Mulch Delivery Begins “ELITE 30” CLUB CONTINUES TO GROW! Nine current HC students have joined the “Elite 30” Club by scoring a 30 or above on their ACT test. A score of 30 places a student in the top 4% of students nationally and is a benchmark score that all students try to attain. A score of 30 or above practically guarantees students full scholarships to a large number of universities in the country. Over the past four years, 44 Holy Cross students have reached this goal of joining the “Elite 30 Club”. Current students are seniors Tim Woeste, Stanley Doerger, Noelle Lameier, Lillian Frantz, Marty McDaniel, Evan Reynolds, Regan Bales and juniors Nick Scheper and Donovan Finan. The average ACT score for our senior class last year was 22.3, which is excellent and far exceeds national and state averages. He has been a prosecutor since 1984 and has a private business as well. John played basketball in high school, noting that “basketball and baseball were really the only options we had back then”. John and his wife Debbie have three sons who all graduated from Holy Cross, Justin in ’04 , Jordan in ‘09 and Jared in ‘12. John has been a constant supporter of Holy Cross High School, offering his legal expertise whenever needed. He has been very instrumental in the procedural acceptance of the properties that have been gifted to Holy Cross in recent years. John also coached grade school and AAU teams that have represented Holy Cross over the years. Congratulations, John, and welcome to the Alumni and Friends Service Hall of Fame! Mary Guidugli - Mary Guidugli has been a constant around Holy Cross for the past 15 years. Mary’s exceptional grant- writing skills, her high-level enthusiasm, and go-getter attitude have benefitted Holy Cross more than most people know. For someone who did not graduate or have children who graduated from HC, one might ask why. Mary’s explanation is simple—”My mother Delores Hengehold Metzger graduated from Holy Cross High School in ‘34 . Growing up, my parents attended Holy Cross Masses on Christmas and Easter, Turk-a-rama in November and countless other Holy Cross functions, bringing her children with her.” Her aunts and uncles also attended Holy Cross, and her mom let her children know how much she loved Holy Cross. After the death of her father in 1992, Mary made good on a promise to make a donation to Holy Cross. In 1995 Mary met John Wysong, who was beginning the football program at Holy Cross and she realized that she had met her match. In her first year of grant writing for Holy Cross, Mary secured $75,000 from the State of KY and $25,000 from a donor. Through Mary’s association with Aramark, Holy Cross High School has made close to 1 million dollars by working the Bengals games. Mary continues to work tirelessly to support the upkeep of Eva G. Farris Sports Complex. Mary is married to Dan and has twin sons Joe and Greg and four grandchildren. Holy Cross is proud to receive Mary into the Alumni and Friends Service Hall of Fame. Tim Bockweg - Tim is the father of Megan ‘09 and Nick ‘10 Bockweg and an invaluable asset to Holy Cross High School. Tim began volunteering at Holy Cross when the windows in the new building were replaced in 2002 and has been a jack of all trades around the school ever since. Tim spent numerous summers helping to rehab the classrooms and restrooms in the “old” building, helped transform some of the donated properties, installed a roof on the “new building” and has served on the Sports Nite Committee for the past eight years. Tim says, “We knew HC was the right place for our children to attend when we would talk to friends who had attended HC or their children had, and they would always say something good, or that they were helping with something at HC , or going to catch a game etc. It seems to me that everyone comes back for one reason or another and that was special to us, and still is.” Although Tim did not graduate from Holy Cross, he is part of the Holy Cross family and a deserving candidate for induction into the Holy Cross Alumni and Friends Service Hall of Fame. 4 Alumni, Family & Friends Newsletter PRE-DERBY LUNCHEON AND HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY The Pre-Derby Luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 26th at The Marquis Event Center, adjacent to Town and Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Kentucky. JUDE THE BELIEVER The Society of St. Jude the Believer exists to help secure the financial future of Holy Cross High School by helping to build an endowment through planned giving. Success in the coming decades rests squarely on the school’s ability to build a base of capital. As you are aware, Holy Cross, like all Catholic high schools today, faces enormous financial challenges. And in many instances, the needs of the school and the families that we serve are greater than we can accommodate. Short term, our reality is that our parents, alumni and friends do everything they are asked with tuition, the Alumni and Friends Annual Appeal and many other resources. Our concern is the long term and you and others like you could be the answer. You can help. The proceeds for the Society of St. Jude the Believer will be used to fund the tuition-assistance needs of today’s and tomorrow’s students. Remembering Holy Cross with a planned gift is simple, and many benefactors will find that they are able to benefit Holy Cross to a greater extent in their estate plans than they would be able to do from current resources. Please consider joining the Society of St. Jude the Believer. For more information contact katie.wesseling@hchscov.com or 859-655-2192. LIFE INSURANCE AS PLANNED GIVING Life insurance is an asset you may not think of donating to Holy Cross High School until you hear how powerful, practical and simple it can be. When you own a life insurance policy with accumulated cash value, you're essentially sitting on a pile of money. When the original purpose for the protection no longer applies—such as to educate children now grown or to provide financial security for a spouse now deceased—your life insurance can be redirected to help support a worthwhile cause. One option is simply to name Holy Cross High School as the primary beneficiary. (Naming us as beneficiary while you retain ownership of the policy, however, does not qualify you for an income tax deduction.) Or, you can name us as the beneficiary and also assign us ownership of the policy as a current charitable gift. Doing so provides you tax benefits as outlined below. When you assign us ownership of a life insurance policy and also name us as the beneficiary, the following good things happen: You receive an income tax charitable deduction, available under most circumstances. You realize tax savings from use of the deduction, and these savings can be invested for future income. You reduce your future estate tax liability. Donating a New Policy Perhaps you don't own an existing policy but still realize how beneficial giving life insurance can be. If so, you can—in most states—purchase a new insurance policy and name a qualified charity like ours as the beneficiary and owner of the policy. Rather than paying premiums to the insurance company, you make tax-deductible cash gifts to cover the annual premiums. 8 Alumni, Family & Friends Newsletter The 2013-14 Annual Appeal officially “kicked-off” on Tuesday, September 17. Close to 100 past donors gathered to listen to Anne Verst Julian ’86 , representing the Chair Family (Marilyn Gadker ‘63 and Tony Verst, daughters Tonja Verst Lewis 85, Anne Verst Julian ’86, Becky Verst Houston ‘89, Nichole Verst Smith ‘91 and granddaughter Jayden Julian ‘12) tell of the family’s experiences at Holy Cross and how it has contributed to their family in the areas of education, social skills and especially in faithfilled experiences. Anne spoke of the many miracles she has seen first hand at Holy Cross as a student, a teacher and a member of the Holy Cross family. An excerpt from the letter from the Verst family that all should have received in October follows: “...Holy Cross High School has distinguished itself from other area high schools by offering more than academic education. Our experience as graduates of Holy Cross included lessons from the gospels of Jesus, a family-oriented community, and empowerment to become leaders in a diverse and global society that inspires us for a lifetime. “This is the year to ‘Imagine the possibilities’. A possibility demands one’s utmost power, capacity and ability. We believe in Holy Cross High School and want to make sure that it stays strong in its commitment to provide the highest quality of education for all. “The Annual Appeal at Holy Cross is essential in the mission to provide our students with the absolute best academic and extracurricular programs. … “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. John 6:37” In keeping with the mission of Holy Cross High School, our diversity prompts a need to help families who are in need of tuition-assistance in providing a Catholic education for their children. Our teachers, who are so talented and do such a great job day in and day out, need to be taken care of so they are able to make ends meet and continue their vocation of teaching at Holy Cross High School. A major goal this year is to air condition the gymnasium to make conditions bearable for summer camps and fall sports as well as for school assemblies and to stay competitive in the modern era of facilities. Our current pledges and payments total $109,684, on the way to our goal of $210,000. Thanks to our loyal supporters. Thanks also to the new donors - we desperately need each and every one of you. No donation is too large or too small. If you have not yet donated, please consider this very worthy cause. You can donate on-line through the website hchscov.com or use the form below. It was the first day of my junior year in 1969. I had registered to take a foreign language because I was told that you had to have two years of it to get into college. Sr. Carmella had been Sr. Carmella, 2nd from left, surrounded by her sisters at the retirement celebration for away from Holy Cross for several years and had just come back from Sr. Samuel and Sr. Carmella in 2006 teaching at Villa. I walked into her sixth period classroom and saw my fellow classmate, Andy Sketch, sitting in the second desk in the second row. He had a look of panic on his face, and he welcomed me to sit in front of him as soon as I walked in. I soon found out what his problem was - there were about 15 girls in the room so far and more kept coming in. He was the only boy until he saw me. I sat down and the parade continued as five or ten more girls came in and then finally a boy, whom we later found out was a junior transferee from Cov Cath named Bob Theissen, walked in and sat way in the back of the room. By the time the bell rang, there were about twenty five freshman and sophomore girls and 3 junior boys in the class. After the bell rang, Sr. Carmella spotted our little oasis of masculinity, came over to our desks, pointed to us and announced, “These guys are the lucky ones. Before I’m finished with them, they’re going to be your Frenchspeaking boyfriends.” The classroom erupted in female giggles, Andy and I turned beet red, but in spite of that, I realized that this older nun had a sense of humor. I liked her right away. Although I didn’t make the best grades, I loved going to her class. She made learning fun and although a little strict at times, she truly cared about her students and never forgot her former ones. My brother-in-law, Don Meyer ’65, was in Vietnam at the time and she often asked if he was okay and assured me of her prayers. My sister, Kay Urlage ’65, had just had her first child, Kellie ’87. She saw them in church one Sunday and told me to ask her to bring Kellie up to visit her because “I would love to see that baby.” Obviously, my sentiments towards her were shared by many other former students. Between being taken out to lunch regularly by the “kids” from the class of ’50 for years or being driven to their old hometown in West Virginia for a sentimental journey or traveling to other parts of the world with other Villa and Holy Cross alumni, Sr. Carmella and Sr. Samuel were always on the go. I used to call them the flying nuns. After I heard that she had died, I figured that she was 61 years old that first year that I had her. That would be like me living another 43 years at sixty! Unbelievably, and possibly due to her active and conservative lifestyle with Sr. Samuel, she was blessed with remarkably good health until a month or so before she died. Office secretary Judy Borchers saw her and a friend out to lunch last fall. Sr. Carmella recognized her right away and asked her to come and visit her at St. Walburg. Shortly thereafter, just before Thanksgiving, she fell at the convent and broke a bone. From there on, she went slowly downhill. The other sisters sensed that she missed Sr. Samuel so much and that she was just ready to go. Both Sr. Carmella and Sr. Samuel epitomized the Catholic education that four generations of my family have valued here at Holy Cross for the last 98 years. Their passages have sort of marked the end of an era for all of us.
