The Digital Imperative:
How Networks and Platforms Are Transforming HR’s Agenda
Barry Libert
Digital Board Member, CEO Advisor, Angel Investor and co-author of The Network
Imperative: How to Survive and Grow in the Age of Digital Business Models
Digital networks — such as those created by Amazon, Google, Uber and Airbnb — are changing what we
do, how we do it and how rewards get distributed. They are at the helm of a rapid shift in the way business
is done today and produce unprecedented returns with less investment. The problem, however, is that
98% of today’s organizations are neither truly digital nor networked. Consequently, it is not a question of
whether they need to change, but rather how much and when. As a longtime advisor to businesses of all
sizes, Barry Libert has seen what works and what doesn’t when it comes to digital transformation. Drawing
from his extensive experience, he’ll not only explain why change is necessary, but more importantly, what
kinds of changes are needed, and the increasingly important role HR and HRIT leaders are going to need
to play to help bring them about.

Great HR leaders understand the best talent wins. With that in mind, investments in advanced technologies to make recruiting easier, faster, more efficient and cheaper have been a hallmark of the HR and HR
technology landscape for over two decades. Starting with the first major online job boards, to the emergence of enterprise ATS solutions and the rise of LinkedIn, to video interviewing and mobile capability,
there’s been no shortage of technology designed to make finding, engaging and hiring candidates easier.
But despite significant investments in recruiting technologies, organizations still report that hiring has
never been more difficult, with the average time to fill an open position reaching historic levels. You’ll learn
about the modern recruiting challenge, how technology has evolved to help meet that challenge, and how
to best leverage your investments in recruiting technology to achieve better outcomes.

The Employer Value Proposition:
What the CHRO Needs to Know
CHRO2
Thursday, Oct. 6 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Your Employer Value Proposition (EVP), or why someone wants to work for you, should clearly define your
organization’s culture, employee experience, employer brand and work environment. Once owned by
marketing and communication departments, EVP and employer branding is now under the HR and talent
acquisition functions. A strong, descriptive EVP supported by the employer brand helps companies attract
talent and makes the task of sourcing simpler. But, a weak EVP and brand, or one that misrepresents your
company culture, can have a negative impact on your overall talent acquisition strategy. Organizations
today face a unique set of challenges related to employer branding, including how to customize the EVP
for different regions and effectively communicate that EVP to a diverse workforce. You’ll learn the critical
elements of defining, communicating, and using the EVP and brand to ensure your organization can compete for the most sought-after talent.

Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 1:15 - 2:15 p.m.
Several sweeping consumer trends in mobile technology, usage of social networks, increased organizational transparency and the implementation of smart technologies are transforming how leading
organizations are sourcing, developing and engaging with potential, current and former employees.
But what are the keys to this “Consumerization” of HR? And how are companies using the principles of
consumerization and consumer behavior to reinvent and expand HR’s role? Cisco, Kronos and IBM are
leading the way. Hear examples of why and how these companies are using consumerization principles
in HR and the business results they have achieved. You’ll learn how you can create the workplace as an
experience where all the elements of work — physical, emotional, intellectual, virtual and aspirational —
are carefully orchestrated to: inspire employees and help develop them into brand ambassadors, recruit
boomerang employees, use state of the art collaborative technologies to engage employees, and build
an open talent marketplace.
According to Deloitte’s 2016 Global Human Capital Trends report, employee engagement is a top talent
issue facing organizations today, with 85% of surveyed executives rating engagement as important to
them. As the methods and tactics to measure engagement continue to expand, so does the challenge of
addressing this critical human capital issue. Despite the emergence of many tools for frequently evaluating employee sentiment, 64% of organizations still only measure employee engagement annually — which
is no longer enough to deal with a multi-generational and changing workforce. Learn effective strategies to
measure engagement as well as the role of business leaders, managers and HR to be always listening to
the voice of employees, acting on findings, and making meaningful progress on engagement.

people more and more. So what will the role of HR look like in 2022? How will you need to evolve, develop
new skills and agility, and continue to embrace and adopt new technology to create the optimized future
of work? These CHROs will share their insights on how you can develop and adapt your role and build a
future-proof, agile workforce to ensure you can deliver for tomorrow’s business.

TALENT MANAGEMENT
TM1
John Kelley, Chief People Officer & VP, White Castle
Max Caldwell, Managing Director, Data, Surveys & Technology, Willis Towers Watson
Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
As the nation’s first fast food hamburger chain, White Castle has cultivated a distinct position in a crowded
segment. This family owned and operated business has a brand widely perceived as fun, vibrant and
current, but with a long-standing history. White Castle boasts intensely loyal team members and notably lower turnover than industry norms. But until recently, White Castle’s HR function relied heavily on
paper-based processes, making employee data fragmented and cumbersome to work with. Employee
communications were limited, largely hard copy and messaging was conservative. Find out how White
Castle selected and implemented a new talent management system that has taken its HR processes
from antiquated to innovative. You’ll discover how new and modern performance management, market
analysis and compensation management systems can create efficiencies and revitalize the HR function —
enabling HR and business leaders to confidently make better decisions about talent.

Thursday, Oct. 6 | 4 - 5 p.m.
The words “performance management” and “valuable” rarely appear in the same sentence. But some
companies have figured it out. Three senior HR leaders will share examples of how their companies have
effectively used performance management technology to drive value for their businesses. These companies have developed solutions to recognize that all employees are valuable — some more than others
— by including practices that accurately rate and reward top performing employees without making others
feel unimportant or unfairly treated. You’ll hear how they use technology to differentiate and reward high
performing employees in a manner that has increased employee engagement across their entire workforce. Plus, you’ll learn why methods that work in one organization might fail in another, how they enlisted
support of business operations leaders, what training and change management was required to make
their solutions work, and the lessons they’ve learned.
TM2
Pat Ross, Deputy Director of Membership, Team Rubicon
Chris Stewart, VP of Global Client Success & Support, Cornerstone OnDemand
Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Founded in the wake of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010, Team Rubicon is a nonprofit
organization with a two-fold mission: to provide immediate relief when disaster happens, and to provide
military veterans with purpose, community and self-worth after leaving active duty. In the early days, several logistical and operational challenges prevented Team Rubicon from scaling up. Its technology systems
— essentially one-to-one email communication and Excel spreadsheets — severely hampered timely
deployments. New technology came to the rescue in 2014 and now it can provide cultural and organizational training that prepares team members for deployment the moment disaster strikes. In 2015 alone,
Team Rubicon deployed more than 1,300 veterans to 35 domestic and 3 international operations totaling
more than 75,000 hours of on-the-ground disaster response. Learn how you too can become more agile
in positioning your talent to the projects and locations where they are needed the most.

TM3

Panelists to be Announced
Thursday, Oct. 6 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
HR experts have been forecasting the demise of the annual review and other traditional performance
management processes for years, and now the shift towards a more personalized approach is quickly

what? Deloitte and other early adopters of modern approaches from Workday will explore the next generation of performance management, outlining why we should move from “managing” performance to
enabling it. They’ll share perspectives on what HR leaders can do to strategically accelerate and enable
performance for greater productivity and employee engagement. You’ll learn how technology can be used
to support employees and career development in a way that will meet the evolving needs of the workforce

KPMG learned and best practices for adopting chat-based interactions to engage highly targeted talent

Referrals are arguably the most important source of hire in the talent acquisition quiver. While the focus
has been on referrals from employees, it has now broadened to candidates, alumni, vendors and even
customers, parents and others. There is no argument that 95% of employers have some form of a referral
program but technology tools have long struggled to support the diverse competitive practices that corporations use. In this panel, experienced talent acquisition leaders will engage the audience in discussions
of the issues, technology tools, best competitive practices and future trends of referral programs. Gerry
Crispin will also supply and review data from an in-depth study of referral practices in 200 companies

action. Anderson is now using these tools to take proactive measures to keep its best talent and to determine whether the retention processes in place are actually working. Through its journey, you’ll learn to

and your return on investment. He’ll cover all of the elements of HR technology and how they fit together.
Plus, he’ll give you an overview of the HR technology landscape to help you determine which areas of HR
tech you are most interested in learning more about so you can design your ideal conference experience.

The Experts Tell You How
CS4
George LaRocque, Principal Analyst and Founder, #HRWINS
Cristina Goldt, VP, Presales, Workday
Irfan Khan, Principal Sales Consultant, Oracle
Mara New, VP, Global Presales, SumTotal Systems
Thursday, Oct. 6 | 4 - 5 p.m.
You’ve written detailed requirements, sent out and graded the RFPs, and narrowed down your HR tech
vendors to a short list. Now it’s time for one of the most critical steps in the vendor selection process:
the onsite product demonstrations. But how do you know that you have properly prepared for these important sessions? What should you be looking for? How do you structure the meetings? What questions
should you ask? And how do you ensure you get the most value, needed insight and information from
the demonstrations in order to make the best selections? Learn the answers to these questions and more
from a panel of veteran HR tech solution advisors who, combined, have run thousands of demos. You’ll
leave ready to own your next HR tech demo, and be more prepared to make the right decisions for your
organization.
Brian Sommer, HCM Contributor, Diginomica; CEO, TechVentive and Vital Analysis
Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 1:15 - 2:15 p.m.
For years, new HR technology was justified by productivity gains and reduced systems costs. But after
you’ve re-automated payroll for the third time, how much more productivity gain is possible? There are
other opportunities for savings but it will take a new approach to serving the business: thinking about IT
and how HR will drive strategic advantage. If your recent plans to modernize HR haven’t found favor at the
Executive Committee, then join Brian Sommer as he shows you how to build the HR business case of the
future. You’ll learn invaluable perspectives on how non-HR and board of directors executives evaluate HR
technology investment capital decisions, the metrics that work in moving an HR change initiative forward,
how to get the funding for those big change HR initiatives and how understanding the key HR technologies
will propel your next HR business case.
The Never-Ending Implementation:
How to Thrive in the Post-Production Release Cycle

Mark Stelzner, Founder, Managing Principal, IA HR Advisors
Friday, Oct. 7 | 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Planning for New HR Technology?
How to Manage the “People” Aspects of Major Change
CS3
Speed, agility and compliance are the mainstays of a cloud provider’s value proposition, but how can employers prepare themselves for the relentless cadence of enhancements and updates? Mark Stelzner will
walk you through five practical approaches to both surviving and thriving in the post-production release
cycle. From the power of your voice in the provider community to organizational and operational strategy,
he’ll share real-world examples you can apply immediately after the conference. Having supported some
of the most complex HR cloud deployments in the world, Mark has a practical and entertaining perspective that you won’t want to miss.
Katherine Jones, Partner, Mercer
Thursday, Oct. 6 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Many technical deployments fail not because of flawed technology or a lack of good intentions, but because the organization wasn’t invested in making the change work. Katherine Jones will discuss the key
steps in initiating successful organizational change and give practical advice on how and when to take
those steps. She’ll explain how to: evaluate your project stakeholders, assess organizational change readiness and capability, and work with solution providers when planning for and deploying new software to
manage HR. You’ll leave prepared to create a step-by-step plan for a technology change implementation;
work with the vendor throughout the planning and deployment process; and plan for the post-deployment
phases when working with modern, cloud-based HR technology solutions.

Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
It began with a question: How could Citi encourage the most talented developers and startups to imagine and build solutions that could apply internally? To achieve the goal of driving more innovation into
the organization while connecting emerging technology companies with the business, the Citi Smarter
Worklife Challenge was launched. The initiative sought to crowdsource leading technologies to connect
employees with productive and fulfilling work — from recruitment through retirement. Learn how Citi and
thought partner PwC managed to streamline the procurement cycle and radically change the way HR
technology is imagined and selected within the bank, all in an effort to increase productivity and drive
radical transformation internally.

The Datafication of HR: Ask the Expert Panel

Jocelyn Caldwell, Senior Director, Workforce Research, Analytics and Improvement, TIAA-CREF
Timothy Hickey, Director of HR Strategic Services, Exelon Corporation
Todd Horton, Director, Workforce Intelligence, Dignity Health
John Schwarz, CEO, Visier
Wednesday, October 5 | 1:15 - 2:15 p.m.
Workforce analytics is now a top priority for most CHROs, yet the successful “Datafication” of an HR
organization involves a lot more than just buying technology. It’s also about ensuring your team has the
skillset and mindset to graduate from empathy-based to evidence-based HR, and figuring out how to
manage the challenges that change brings. This panel of experts have all been through the journey, and
they’ll share their war stories and best practices with you, providing practical guidance about how to
begin adopting a data-driven approach to HR. You’ll leave with a better understanding on how to chart
your own course towards becoming a more data-driven HR function and organization.
Companies that aren’t household names often have to battle for talent against well-known brands. This
year, the People and Marketing teams at SMB software company Lever kicked into collaborative overdrive
to overcome such an awareness deficit. The results? They successfully “recruited” 80% of their own employees to help shape a powerful, differentiated employer brand; amplified the resulting messages across
HR and marketing channels alike; and more than doubled their headcount and client roster. Hear how to
leverage your employees as ambassadors and turn them into an employer branding advantage, effectively engage with marketing as a partner, and implement great place to work strategies without breaking
the budget.

CEOs continue to worry about talent, and how they can best align and engage their talent in a fast-paced,
competitive environment. PepsiCo is no different. As one of the world’s leading food and beverage companies, PepsiCo has an unmistakable global portfolio of diverse and beloved brands, sold in more than 200
countries and territories. How did it get there? Simple: PepsiCo’s strength is its people — all 250,000 of
them. In today’s digital economy, companies have to move faster than ever or face obsolescence, and that
only happens by engaging their people — making HR more important than ever. Shakti Jauhar will share
what enabling HR transformation looks like at organizations today, how the cloud is easing the journey and
the successes it’s had along the way. You’ll walk away with some key insights on how technology and the

THE WORLD-FAMOUS EXPO

Leighanne Levensaler, SVP, Products, Workday
Wednesday, Oct. 5 | 1:15 - 2:15 p.m.
With 300+ exhibitors in every type of HR technology, the HR Tech Expo
is your once-a-year chance to see and touch all the latest products and
services available to help you improve the HR processes you need to
operate more smoothly, cost efficiently and strategically.
Abbott Labs has long understood that it must quickly adapt and embrace change to thrive in the
competitive, fast-moving healthcare market. In 2013, Abbott’s transformation began when it spun off its
proprietary pharma arm and separated into two Fortune 200 companies. With over half of its employees
and business outside of the U.S. and 75% of growth occurring in emerging markets, the company realized it needed to rebuild its talent pipeline and bench for succession — and that required visibility into its
global workforce to identify gaps and align the right skill sets with roles. Hear the Abbott team’s unique
approach to solving these challenges by developing a unified HR, Talent Management and Recruiting
system which helped transform the HR function into a strategic advisor to the business. The lessons
learned will help you better design, plan and execute your own HR technology transformation.
