Kia ora koutou. Hello Everyone.
Who would have believed it! Snow at Cornwall Park District School. Monday was
a day I am sure many of our students will remember in years to come. It was
interesng to see the children's reacon when they realised it was actually
snowing and even though it didn't last long there was great excitement from students and teachers a like; especially for
some as it was the first falling snow they had ever seen. We event had reports from neighbours who heard the gleeful
squeals from way down Wheturangi Road. View our own excited roving reporter, Mrs Grimsey, who video some of our
children. This can be viewed on Knowledge Net.

further improve in Mathemacs by helping them at home. A number of praccal and fun
acvies and games were shared and tried out by our a7endees. I would like to thank all

ROK Soldier
Cross Country - All the best to the children who will be represenng our school at the zones cross
country next week. We are very proud of you!
Learning the Korean Way
An'nyeonghaseyo
One of the highlights of my recent trip to Korea was a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) which is a
strip of land that forms a buffer between North Korea and South Korea at the 38 Parallel. Many people
forget that these two countries are only at ceasefire aDer signing the Korean Armase
Agreement and over the years there have been many incidents between the two
sides. Last year in March a South Korean Navy Ship was sunk by a North Korean
torpedo (although denied by the North) and even while we were in Korea there
reports around rising tension regarding up and coming military exercises South
Korea was planning with America.
It was sobering to hear as we drove along the barbed wired river banks of the River Han, that a number
of a7empts had been made by small groups of northern troops to infiltrate the South via the river. Once
clearing the American Passport control, we were presented a small movie outlining the on-going
challenges faced by the JSA (Joint Security Area) and the many fatal incidents that have occurred over
ROK Soldiers the past 35 years. I must admit they were very good at bringing home the reality of where we were.
The next stop was walking out from the Freedom House onto the famous steps many of us would
recognise from photos taken. A North Korean guard was clearly visible on the
opposite steps and it was clear that our movements were also been recorded.
Pictures of North
If we didn't realise the on-going tension that existed before, we did now.
Korean Soldiers
Once we moved into the United Naons Command Conference building we
watching us
got a chance to stand in North Korea for a few moments looking at the blue
door that led the way into one of the five only communist countries leD in the
world.
To be connued...
Kind regards, Janine Irvine, Principal

PTA News
Athon
This is traditionally the biggest fundraiser of the year for the
PTA. Well done to the children for all the effort put in to
learning their Athon questions and maths problems and also
to the teachers, parents and caregivers for their support in
learning them. Many thanks to Caroline MacKenzie and
Fiona Campbell who organised this event and we look
forward to letting you know how much has been raised when
the final figures are tallied. Remember, we offer an
incentive for the class who returns their money to school first
so please forward the funds to the class teacher as soon as
possible if you haven’t already done so.
Quiz Night – It’s Not Too Late!
Hopefully you’re all organized for the legendary quiz
night happening this Saturday 20th August. If you
haven’t secured a table yet and you can hustle up a
group of 10, it’s not too late but you’ll need to do it right
now!
This year the theme is International Events & Cultures
so a last minute costume should be achievable. It
really is a great night out so book the babysitter, get a
team of 10 together and make it happen.
School Banking is a great way for
children to save. CPDS arranges
banking on Friday’s.
If you would like a new a/c
application form or would like to
register with school banking, visit
the school office.
Children bring
their deposit
envelope into the
office and put
them in the
container
provided.
Family Photos – $10 Family
Portraits
By now, you should have received
the flyer for Jack ‘n’ Jill Portraits.
This is a great opportunity to have professional family
portraits taken at school on Friday 26th and Saturday
27th of August. The cost per sitting is $10 and this
entitles you to receive a quality 10” x 13” photo at no
charge. For bookings please contact Helen Martinez,
by phone 523 1006 or helen.martinez@clear.net.nz

Learning Intention:
To develop an understanding of the size of the standard unit.
We are Learning to:
Estimate and measure, using a standard unit.
Success Criteria:
Make sensible estimates about the capacity of given objects.
Fill the biggest and pour
into the next.
Time how long it takes to fill
with water.

Choose a bottle to fill at the fountain.
Start the timer as you push the fountain button.
Stop the timer when the water reaches the top without

Put the times in order from the shortest to longest time to
fill up.

They were all a clear
answer.
We made a good team.
We clicked the button of
the watch exactly at the
same time as we filled
the water in the bottle.
If we pushed the tap harder the
answer would have been
different because the speed of it
wouldn’t be the same.
Every time we poured it in it
wasn’t the same amount every
time.
The top of the bottles weren't
the same size, some of the water
splashed out.
It was
interesting to
see how
different our
guesses were
to the actual
answers.
It was easy to
pour the water
because the tops
were wide.
Other than the
first two, we
guessed correctly.
We guessed the Avanti bottle was
the biggest but it was second
biggest.
When we poured from one to the
other some water flowed out,
which meant that we had the
incorrect result.
At the start we all disagreed on the
biggest.
We were surprised
because the first biggest
bottle was really the
second biggest.
We thought the tallest
would make it the
biggest, but we were
wrong.
