Industrial Control Panels 409.1 Scope. This article covers industrial control panels intended for general use and operating at 600 volts or less. FPN: UL 508A is a safety standard for industrial control panels. 409.110 Marking. An industrial control panel shall be marked with the following information that is plainly visible after installation: (3) Short circuit current rating of the industrial control panel based on one of the following: A. Short circuit current rating of a listed and labeled assembly B. Short circuit current rating established utilizing an approved method FPN: UL 508A-2001, Supplement SB, is an example of an approved method. Meaning: This ties UL 508A and its supplements into the NEC and the subsequent SCCR ratings for panels. UL 508A SB5.1.1 Effective April 25, 2006, UL 508A approved panels will be required to include on its nameplate rating of industrial control panels its Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) Determination of a panel’s SCCR rating is achieved by listing all of the individual component’s ratings and selecting the lowest value. Values not listed on a component defer to assumed values defined in Table SB4.1. Table SB4.2 defines peak let through currents, Ip, and clearing , I2t, for Class CC, G, J, T, L, RK1 and RK5 fuses at 50, 100 and 200kA. Key is using Class J fusible disconnect switches and J fuses in feeder and branch circuits in panels making it easier to achieve 50, 100 or 200kA ratings NEC and UL Standards define required drive installation methods. Drive Manufacturer’s are leaving the responsiblity of meeting these installation standards and drive protection in the hands of the installer. Ferraz Shawmut is committed to the introduction of new and innovative products. Products that are focused at the end-user, providing the end-user with time and cost savings, and optimal protection. The Drive Protection Module combines Ferraz Shawmut manufactured components applied in the power wiring installation stage. 1. AC Drive manufacturers do not provide line side branch circuit or short circuit fuses. With both types of protection required, the HSJ has provided an improved solution to fusing drives. 2. The drive manufacturers do not provide a disconnecting means. 3. In the case of over-voltage, drives are being protected by very low quality surge devices. 4. High short circuit current ratings on panels are not being addressed. 1 Courtesy of Steven Engineering, Inc. ● 230 Ryan Way, South San Francisco, CA 94080-6370 ● General Inquiries: (800) 670-4183 ● www.stevenengineering.com Benefits • Latest safety design and electrical code requirements: - NEC 409 The Drive Protection Module reduces total cost, time and money! STEP 3 - Select DPM current rating from the table provided: Selected Fuse Ampere Rating DPM Current Rating 1A thru 30A 35A thru 60A 3J 6J STEP 4 - Select system voltage & wiring configuration from page 5 diagrams. STEP 5 - Select DPM mounting method: Enclosure or Backplane only. EXAMPLE: STEP 1 - Select your drive manufacturer make, drive part number and HP rating. ABB, ACS series, ACS550-U1-044A-4 which is a 30HP drive. STEP 2 - Select drive protection fusing from the last column of the drive manufacturers selection table. HSJ60 from the fuse selection column of the ABB table off the Ferraz Shawmut website. STEP 3 - Select DPM current rating from the table provided. HSJ60 corresponds to the 35A thru 60A selection which points to the 6J DPM current rating. STEP 4 - Select system voltage & wiring configuration from page 5 diagrams. From the wiring diagrams my system is a 3 phase, 480 volts, Wye connected, (schematic C) STEP 5 - Select DPM mounting method: Enclosure or Backplane only. Need it in enclosure with a NEMA 4X rating in stainless steel. A) If in enclosure - Choose required NEMA rating and enclosure material. B) If backplane only - Reference switch section of Ferraz Shawmut product Advisor or website for proper handle and shaft length selection.
