A Word from
It’s the day after the AGM and I’m still buzzing. What
a great turn-out and what a nice crowd!
Ray and James did the business for us and everyone
said what an enjoyable and rewarding day it had been.
I always worry that people won’t make the effort to
attend or can’t get the time off because of business
requirements but we actually had to bring in some
extra chairs to accommodate everyone that turned up!
As for the Annual Awards, you’ll find details of all the
winners in the coming pages and they all deserve our
warmest congratulations for their efforts, whether as
individuals or Clubs.
Sadly our President, Paul Williams, was unable to attend because of business
commitments, such a shame because this was to be his last AGM as President. Paul
is standing down for personal reasons and on behalf of everyone in HASSRA South
East I want to thank him for his loyal support and encouragement over the past nine
years or so.
The AGM approved the installation of Paul as a HASSRA South East Life Vice
President, an honour which will allow him to continue his connection with HASSRA
South East as he sees fit. He will always be welcome at any event or meeting that
HASSRA South East runs in the future so we hope we have not seen the last of him.
His successor is being sought at this time and an announcement will be made as soon
as details are confirmed.
Last but certainly not least, the AGM formally marked the departure of our RBP Ray
Allen. Ray has been outstanding for more years than I care to remember in terms of
the service, support and effort he has given to the South East organisation and in
recognition of this he became the very first recipient of the new Exceptional Merit
Award.
He is fully deserving of this high accolade and we all wish him the very best in his new
HASSRA post. Ray has been replaced by James Kennedy, someone who is well
known to us in the South East and if we had to lose Ray, then James is definitely the
man for us. Good luck James, you’ve a hard act to follow!
Sports Day promises to be a cracker this year now that we’ve pooled resources with
London so I hope to see many of you there.

The Great Bognor Bake Off
The Great Bognor Bake Off was held on 5 th
December in aid of Tyler’s Trust. Tyler’s Trust
gives personalised gift boxes to children with life
threatening illnesses who live in the Worthing to
Portsmouth & Isle of Wight area. It is run by
Janice who works in Bognor JCP with her son
Tyler who came up with the idea, and has himself
had a brain tumour for the last six years.
The bake off cakes/pies/scones were all baked by
managers connected to Bognor Jobcentre at band
D and upwards. Our district manager judged the
competition along with Tyler, both tasting each of
the 14 cakes!
Luckily for the judges the standard was extremely high. The winner was a lemon drizzle, with a
raspberry cheesecake coming in 2nd, and a spectacular owl chocolate fudge cake coming in 3rd.
After judging the slices of baked goodies they were
sold off.
In addition we had a ‘bring and buy’ sale, a raffle,
name the bear, and silent auction.
All in all we raised £193 for Tyler’s Trust. An
incredible sum given how few staff there were in
Bognor that day; they all dug very deep and we thank
them very much!
Alison
(Bognor Regis)
Tyler’s Trust
At the age of 12 Tyler was diagnosed with a brain tumour and
underwent a considerable amount of treatment in hospital.
Tyler now wants to bring a little sunshine into children's lives
who are suffering from a life threatening condition.
His aim is to provide each child with a balloon, together with a
box of goodies which will include items such as :- Teddy Bear,
Bandana, Mug, Journal, Pens, Sweets and a voucher.
He does not want to forget any siblings, and they too will
receive one of these boxes

1935
– King George 5th
celebrated his 25th year on the
throne, Sheffield Wednesday won
the FA cup and driving tests
became compulsory in the UK.
And HASSRA was born!
Well, it wasn’t actually HASSRA at
the time, but the social club that
eventually became HASSRA came
into being in March 1935 as the
Unemployed Assistance Board
(UAB) Sports Association - UABSA
for short. Membership cost one penny a week (twelve pennies = 5p – you do the maths!)
One of the new committee’s primary concerns was that of team colours and, after much debate,
it was decided on navy blue for the men and royal blue for the ladies. The Regional bodies and
their own team colours weren’t formed until 1945 and many of the Regions today still have, more
or less, the same areas they had back then.
The social club had a couple of name changes down the years as the social security department
took on new responsibilities and changed its own title – there was MNISSC (the Ministry of
National Insurance Sports and Social Club), MOSSRA (Ministry of Social Security Recreational
Association) and finally, in 1969 after the merger with the Ministry of Health, HASSRA (Health &
Social Security Recreational Association).
But, as new governments were formed, each one determined to ‘radically restructure the Social
Security for the better’ the Department (and its title) morphed yet again - first into the DSS and the
BA and later to where we are now – the DWP with Job Centre Plus (I recall an early directive
instructing that this title was ‘not to be abbreviated to JCP’!) So, with the removal of the words
‘Social Security’ from our title the acronym HASSRA was no longer strictly relevant. The members
were asked for suggestions for a new name for our club - the winning suggestion? – ‘The
Association previously known as HASSRA’ (APKAH for short?) the hint was taken up, the name
was left alone and HASSRA we remain.
What are you doing to celebrate the 80th Anniversary this year?
Maggie Smith
South East
Our Region has also had a few
name changes over the years –
‘London South’, ‘South’ and
‘South East’ being the most
recent but, while other Regions
have changed their colours at
every chance, we have firmly
clung to our ‘claret and blue’ - as
you can see on the left where
our members competed in the
1985 Special Event.
Why claret and blue? The story, passed down the years, goes back to when the regions were
asked to consider what colours they wanted. The Chair and the Regional secretary of the day
(now known as the ‘business partner’) were both ardent football fans – one for West Ham, one for
Aston Villa – the colours they were going to choose for our HASSRA Region was obvious!

A Message from
Paul Williams
Another Annual Report and another ring around the old tree.
And yes a fine year once again for HASSRA South East with
another splendid Sports day and some notable team and
individual successes.
We say ‘goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ to Ray Allen, who has served
HASSRA South East so well for more years that I care to
remember. I am sure you'll join me in wishing Ray all the best in
his new role and thanking him for his long and unstinting
support.
After almost eight years in the role, I have also decided to pass on the baton as your President. The
past few months have proved tough in all sorts of ways and I hope to partially retire in April to spend,
in the words of the political cliché, more time with my family. Mr Wyatt assures me I won't regret my
decision .......to partially retire that is!
The past few months have reminded me of the vital importance in our lives of fellowship and
friendship with colleagues we work alongside every day. HASSRA personifies that spirit. At its finest,
HASSRA is about care and thoughtfulness and yes - steady lads and lasses - love for each other.
To slightly misquote Corinthians, "love keeps no record of wrongs. It always protects; always trusts;
always hopes; always perseveres. It never fails". Not a bad tenet to live by in our dealings with each
other, irrespective of our faith, or indeed absence of it.
Kind regards,
.
Paul

Sittingbourne has great news!
We have just received the news that someone has very kindly
paid the remainder of the money that we needed to name the
guide dog puppy that Sittingbourne HASSRA have been
collecting for.
So…yes, folks we did it! We raised the fantastic amount of £5,000!!!! And on top of
that we also raised over a thousand pounds in gift aid!
The necessary form has been completed and sent it off to ‘Guide Dogs’.
As agreed, we have asked for our puppy to be called ‘Roman’ and as soon as he is
old enough he will come to visit us with his puppy walker. I will let everyone know
when it has all gone through and give you all updates when I get them - especially
when I get the news that our little pup has been born!
Our kind donator has decided to remain anonymous which, of course, is their choice
but I have made sure that they are aware of how grateful we all are. Especially Guide
Dogs!
Thanks again to Sittingbourne staff for all the support and help you have given in
making our fund raising such a success.
Davida
Since then we received this from ‘Guide Dogs’! :

MILTON KEYNES HASSRA and the AGM
We recently had the pleasure of attending the Regional AGM for HASSRA.
In 2014 we lost our treasurer, deputy treasure and Chairman to transfer and retirement. This meant
the committee had to quickly re-organise and try and continue the fantastic work and events for our
members while trying to get our head round new roles.
All committee members worked hard in 2014 to make sure our members get value for money and
the office is happy. This was achieved during numerous events including a fabulous summer fair
and a coach trip to see our adopted donkey, a new trip to go shopping ahs been arrange for 2015.
We also hold an office wide HASSRA Christmas buffet, this was free for members and had a
nominal charge for non-members along with a display of what HASSRA could offer non- members.
Due to the active presence of our HASSRA team we have a recruitment rate of 72%.
All of the above was recently noted and rewarded by the regional team when we won not only BEST
SMALL OFFICE but also a merit award for Nikki Sawtell and a Contributor of the year award for
Amanda Church. We were surprised and thrilled to think our hard work had not gone un-noticed,
although we do feel we have set the bar very high for 2015!
Both Nikki and Amanda attended the event along with Chair Rob Zorlakki. It was a lovely day, made
special by the awards we got. We would encourage all local HASSRA groups to work hard in 2015,
enter an end of year report and, fingers crossed, you could be up for an award at next year’s AGM!
Milton Keynes HASSRA has developed links with the Local food bank.
A permanent collection box sits in the office for items to be placed by all members and nonmembers. This is taken to the food bank warehouse once a month - or sooner if it’s full!
We put out urgent requests when they
are running low of certain items and the
office always rallies round and are very
generous.
Most recently we have arrange an Easter
egg collection so families who use the
food bank in Easter week can have a
treat for the children, we have nearly
twenty eggs collected in just one week!
The Food Bank send a huge thank you
to all who kindly donated chocolate eggs
for the children of people who are
struggling financially at present. We donated an amazing 26 medium and large Easter eggs.
I had the opportunity to take a look around the food bank premises and asked questions about how
they operate and their funding sources.
They work through community centres and churches and have a mobile Food Bank which takes
them into specific areas each weekday. They also fundraise and operate collection points for foods
at various venues and at supermarkets. The Food Bank in Milton Keynes are a registered charity
and will accept also accept cash donations for running costs such as keeping their van on the road,
heating and lighting the warehouse etc. Most of the people working there were doing so on a
voluntary basis and they have two paid members of staff.

The Claret and Blue Quiz (Answers)
1) b) – Claret is produced in Bordeaux. Mosel is in Germany.
2) d) – Amaranth is red.
3) a) – Aston Villa was founded in 1874, Burnley in 1888, West Ham in 1895.
There is an unsubstantiated tale that in 1899 the father of the right-half playing for West Ham
(then known as ‘Thames Ironworks’) won a bet against a group of Aston Villa players and
received a complete team kit in payment. Burnley took the colours in 1910 in tribute to Aston
Villa who were a dominant club at the time. Which is how they came to have the same colours!
4) a) – the others are b) The flag of Albania c) The National flag of Chile
5) 2000
6) Crystal Palace. Apparently, Reading’s first games in 1871 were in a claret, blue and amber
kit.
