the Eagle GLENEAGLES COUNTRY CLUB NEWSLETTER “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” –Thomas Jefferson APRIL 2013 from the Board & Management Dear Members, Ralph Winer bog president Kraig Spina general manager It is so hard to believe that the end of the season is already upon us! It seems like just yesterday we were ramping up for the 2012-2013 season with Welcome Week. We hope that you all experienced the best lifestyle in South Florida during this past season. As always, please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything that we can improve for next year. The newly elected Board of Governors elected officers on Tuesday, February 26. We are privileged to work with a proactive, dedicated, and experienced Board of Governors, which is complemented well by the more than 100 members who make up our 10 standing committees. We are delighted to report that we continue to exceed all expectations for real estate sales. You all may recall that 2011-2012 was a recordbreaking year with 68 transactions taking place. The 2012-2013 fiscal year is off to a great start with more than 30 transactions either pending or taking place since November 1, 2012. This is almost exactly equal to our progress at this time last year. The Master Plan has been and will continue to be the focus of the Board of Governors and Management for the next 18 months. Many members have asked questions about the communication process, and if there will be any way for them to remain engaged throughout the project with consistent updates. We have already launched a comprehensive communication plan that will be very similar to the communications used during the Legends Course renovation in 2011. This will include e-mail blasts, blog posts, YouTube and timelapse videos, and photograph montages depicting the enhancements as they take place throughout the summer and fall of 2014. We are also proud to report that our ad-hoc Gleneagles Asset Recovery Committee (ARC) has been meeting weekly for the past year to proactively handle the Club’s doubtful or delinquent accounts. Although the Club’s delinquency rate is far less than the industry average and much less than all of our neighboring clubs with 96.9% of our members being current on their obligations to the Club, we are aggressively working with the banks and those owners who are not current on their obligations to the Club. In the past year, the ARC Committee has facilitated the sale of one of the units we took title to, an apartment in the Midrise that had no mortgage attached to it, and to date we have two leases in place where we have residents who are now contributing to the revenue flow of the Club as opposed to sitting dormant. We extend our best wishes for a healthy and enjoyable summer to those residents who are returning up north; and to our year-round residents – we look forward to spending the summer with you at the Club. Raises $137,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation The Gleneagles Ladies Golf Association hosted their 9th annual Play for P.I.N.K fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation on Monday, February 11, and Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida. More than 500 members participated in the two-day event which raised $137,000 this year. Monday morning kicked off the two-day festivities with membervolunteers and committee members located throughout the clubhouse promoting the day’s events: an exciting silent auction and boutique, featuring stylish jewelry, vintage purses, accessories, gift items, and breast cancer awareness items. The awareness and fundraising continued on Tuesday with an exhilarating “Pink and White” scramble-format golf tournament on the Victory and Legends golf courses, followed by a decadent luncheon reception featuring speeches from the co-chairs and breast cancer survivors. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office once again participated by bringing the PBSO Pink Patrol Car and honoring all breast cancer survivors by giving them the opportunity to sign their name on the vehicle The beneficiary of the event is Play for P.I.N.K. which is a grassroots organization that donates 100% of all funds raised from Play for P.I.N.K. events across the country exclusively to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The mission of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. This year’s Play for P.I.N.K. committee, co-chaired by Doris Budow, Diane Forman, Nancy Goodman, and Rona Greenspan has been planning the event for more than a year. Including the proceeds from this year’s event, Gleneagles Country Club has raised $766,000 for Play for P.I.N.K. in the past nine years. 100% of the proceeds from Play for P.I.N.K. events across the country go directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “We are so proud of our charity work here. An incomplete follow through leads to a lack of power and a guiding of the racket head that often results in an open face and a ball that travels high and slow. To use your forehand as an example, try to complete your swing with your racket next to your left ear, (right ear for lefties). You should be able to “kiss” your right bicep on this finish. The stroke should be executed at a constant speed or tempo so you can hear the “swoosh” of the racket through the air. – Mike April Showers Bring May Flower Colors to the Tennis Pro Shop Ruth Barnett pro shop manager Check out our new spring collections of women’s apparel blooming in every flower color. Research shows that a regular walking, swimming, or tennis habit reduces chronic disease risk, but it’s been unclear just how much different levels of exercise might extend our lives. Now a study coauthored by epidemiologist I-Min Lee, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, offers specific exercise prescriptions. Data was pooled from six large studies that included information on the leisure activities and body mass index of more than 650,000 people older than 40, each of whom was followed for an average of 10 years. (Body mass index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.) The researchers’ analysis revealed that subjects who completed the equivalent of 75 minutes of brisk walking each week – roughly 11 minutes a day – lived 1.8 years longer than those who didn’t exercise at all. Those who got the federally-recommended minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week – 22 minutes every day, or 30 minutes a day, five days a week – gained 3-4 years. The gains applied to people of all weight levels, even those who were obese, suggesting even if you don’t lose weight, you’re better off than you were when you were not exercising. Normal-weight people who completed the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week fared best, living more than seven years longer than those who didn’t exercise and had the highest body mass index. Researchers used brisk walking as an example because it’s the most commonly reported form of exercise, but any moderate-intensity activity will do. Lee says, “the only requirement is raising the heart rate to the point that you can carry on a conversation but you can’t sing because you don’t have enough breath.” The good news is this: even if you only do a little, you get a fairly good gain in years. pleatsee! no Gleneagles Country Club 1. April 2013 9 classes & CLUBS ♠ ♥ At The Bridge Table by pat hunn This April marks the first anniversary of my chairmanship of Gleneagles Bridge. While I take pride in several accomplishments, it is tempered by the need for improvement in others. I still have not mastered the Excel programs ♦ ♣ for ranking members by masterpoints earned. My punishment was having to compute, manually, over several hours, the club championship qualifiers list. I can assure the bridge community that all masterpoints earned by the members have been reported, properly, to the ACBL. While the “12 & Dine” programs on Sunday afternoons did not become popular, the Bridge Committee still believes that there is a need in our community for a duplicate bridge game dedicated to newer duplicate players. Attendance at the Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon duplicate games has increased over the prior season. I hope that this is due, at least in part, to the new atmosphere of friendliness and collegiality that I have tried to instill. I shall continue to work to ensure that our members are always treated courteously and that our members always show respect and courtesy to their opponents, partners and directors. The pace of play at our duplicate games still requires improvement. Our Tuesday evening game should end at about 9:45 pm and our Wednesday afternoon game should end no later than 2:45 pm. Badgering members to speed up play is not a solution since it results in an unpleasant game experience. Neither is reducing the number of boards played at each session. We have taken steps to shorten the duration of our games. Our pre-dealt boards eliminate time spent in deal shuffling and dealing cards at the outset of play. The computerized scoring greatly speeds up announcement of results at the end, and instantaneously apprises players of their percentage ranking among those who have played each board previously. This is a wonderful bonus for our members, but on the negative side it encourages time consuming discussions. Our members should strive to reserve socializing to the the times before and after the game. If each round of bridge is completed in the allotted time of 20 minutes for 3 boards, we can resume playing 24 board rounds with comfort. Finally, the rules of bridge require that the defending player tables the initial lead before writing the contract in the private record. Adherence to this practice by every player will speed up pace of play and result in a more enjoyable duplicate game for all. Bridge Computer Club News by jim bachner So... True, it wasn’t ours, but the company that takes care of our website, mailing list, workshop schedules, handouts and everything else. Now, here’s the kicker: they didn’t have a backup! Jerry Bartzoff and members of our executive board spent Presidents Day weekend retrieving details of our programs and activities. The good news is, with minor exceptions, everything is back to normal. February was another banner month. Over 90 registrations to our classes and workshops. Regrettably, because of a limited number of stations in our classroom, a few latecomers had to be turned away. If you did not attend our meeting on February 18, you missed a highlight of the season. Marty Troum presented his most interesting program about “EVIL ON THE INTERNET.” Whatever your interest, iPad, iPhone, Apple, Android, Smart Phones, Tablets, Microsoft, Windows 7, Windows 8 etc., go to our website http:// www.gleneaglescomputer.org, find the class or workshop of your choice and register online. There is always something new to be learned. At our March 18 meeting, Richard Miller will introduced us to Windows 8. April 15 will be the next general meeting on our calendar. Our next HELP DAY will be on April 23 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at our computer Center. Bring your questions and equipment and one of our volunteers will try to help you. Help is always available. Call 637-1231, leave your message and one of our volunteers will call you back as soon as possible. MEMBERS HELPING MEMBERS. Gleneagles Country Club by major tom west, director of security I want to thank everyone for another successful Presidents Week vacation. The Clubhouse staff did an outstanding job to ensure everyone had an enjoyable time of fun in the sun. One thing I would like to address is rules enforcement. If a member happens to witness a rules infraction or security matter, please contact Security. In an effort to avoid any uncomfortable confrontation or potential conflict, getting Security involved right away removes the burden of the member and the issue will be addressed. As the season winds down, I encourage everyone to review their emergency contact list to ensure they are up to date with current information. There have been a few occasions where Security attempts to reach an emergency contact and they are no longer the contact person or the phone number is not valid. Please time a few minutes to update your list. As many of you know, we have had some parking issues at the Strathern Satellite due to bridge classes and lectures. Given that parking in the area is at a premium (as well as Glen Garry), and in effort not to inconvenience the homeowners, I strongly encourage those participants to car pool to alleviate any congestion in the area. Parking in the street is only authorized to those guests of the homeowners and only when the driveways are occupied to full capacity. In addition, vehicles must not block a driveway, mailbox or impede emergency vehicles. Do not park parallel across from another vehicle because this creates a bottleneck and makes it difficult for vehicles to pass. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 561-860-8707. I.C.E. & File of Life… because you can never be too prepared! All Gleneagles members are encouraged to follow the I.C.E. program and complete a File of Life to i.c.e. place on your refrigerator and/or in your wallet in case of emergency. As we all know, we can never be too prepared for when an emergency strikes. By following the I.C.E. protocol, and programming contacts in your cell phone with this well-known prefix, emergency personnel will easily be able to identify your doctor and emergency contacts. A File of Life is a comprehensive document that lists your medications, existing conditions, allergies, and contact information for all doctors with convenient magnets to place on your refrigerator. Files of Life, provided by Delray Medical Center, are available at no charge to members at the Fitness Center, Front Desk, and at the Security Office located at the Linton Gate. April 2013 11 social SCENE Still Going Strong! Randee Spencer social director Time sure does fly by! The season is almost over. We have our Eagles Have Flown “Sock Hop Party” on April 5 & 6. Please send in your lottery slips ASAP. Don’t miss out on the fun! In terms of Nite Spots, we saved the best for last! On April 16, one of your favorite performers, Orson Whitfield, will return to Gleneagles for the last Nite Spot of the season. Orson will be singing and playing piano to all of your favorite tunes, such as Billy Joel, Bono, Josh Groban, Neil Diamond and several others as well. He is a very handsome and versatile entertainer! Also we have two more 92nd Street Y lectures left for the season: Elie Wiesel on April 25 and Jason Alexander on May 16. Spring is just around the corner, and that means your new Cultural Enrichment & Entertainment Committee will soon be hard at work planning our summer events and looking ahead to next season’s shows as well. If anyone would like to offer suggestions or feedback, you can e-mail me at rspencer@gleneagles.cc or call 561-498-3606 ext. 132. Also, we still have our dance classes in the fitness center on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Learn to ChaCha, Salsa, Swing, and several other dances. You can show off to your friends at our dinner dances or when you go out on the town! I would like to thank the 2012-2013 Social & Entertainment Committee and Governors for all of their hard work and time to make this a successful and memorable season! It would not have been possible without you. See you on the dance floor! Sock Hop!
