APRIL 2016
Commodore Donna Beckett
(510) 857-6599 – commodoredll@gmail.com
It’s April and spring is in the air. When you’re on your boat working away at
your latest project and it gets to be time to feed your tummy, don’t forget that
we now are serving Saturday lunch. The galley opens at noon and serves
delicious bar food until 3:00. You can come up to the Club, grab a bite and
get back to your boat before that sander has cooled down. Give it a try. You
will be pleased.
Here’s a recap of the March Board of Directors meeting:
The Commodore thanked both Michelle Leonard and Chris Bailey for volunteering to update our
New Members Package. A lot has changed since the written material was created which gives
the new members information on what our club offers. Donna also thanked Adam, Cameron and
Robert for all the hours and work they performed in putting vital information into Buz in order to
get the system up and running.
Cameron Kauffman, our controller, gave a very informative report on the condition of our
financial systems. He gave a brief biography, indicating that he is a CPA/PHR, Professional of
Human Resources, and has been for 15 years, working with private businesses. He has lived
most of his life in the SF Bay Area, grew up in the Napa Valley and has a vacation home in
Southern Oregon. He is an avid kite flyer and is heavily involved in mentoring young people in a
volunteer organization. His wife’s name is Reina who works in SF and his daughter attends
NAU. The job here interested him due to the nature of the business, the challenge to improve the
club and the flexible and friendly work environment.
Cameron made notice of the lack of procedures which has led to confusion in office practices.
That in turn has led to problems in the timely payment of accounts payable, duplicate payments,
voided checks, etc. Staff turnover was responsible for such things as missed filings, etc.
Buz posts everything on a daily basis which will allow us to know our cash position at all times.
The Club has been transferring bank accounts to Wells Fargo from Bank of Marin to reduce fees
and staff time.
The office has changed payroll from ADP to Intuit resulting in a considerable financial savings.
The staff worked numerous hours to get the Account Receivables current and organized; an
incredibly detailed and time consuming job. They are close to completion. Accounts Payable is
also a high priority and Cameron is setting up procedures to avoid late fees and maintain good
relations with our vendors. The staff is obtaining quotes to retain the services of IT support. Late
last year the Club hired Ken Burns to review our accounting procedures and that has been a great
help in getting procedures in place which are so critical for an efficient and well run financial
system.
We are 100% live on Buz. Because of that we are no longer using Club Tech and Quick Books,
again a financial savings to the Club. Both Club Tech and Quick Books will be kept dormant on
our computer as a source of historical records. Checks are being created from Buz without extra
data entry. The cash account which is used for daily business is being reconciled. Financial
reporting on an accrual basis is underway and the information should be available for the next
Board of Directors meeting. Buz will allow automation of financial reporting, financing planning
(creating a budget) and tracking expenditures versus budget.
The data entry that was necessary to facilitate members being able to pay their account
automatically by credit card was an extraordinarily time consuming project. Each member’s
information had to be manually entered into the system, credit card number, boat information,
slip, dock box, dinghy, power connection, phone number, et., all had to be manually done.
At the end of the report the Board gave Robert, Adam and Cameron a well-deserved round of
applause.
Donna and Rich Beckett went to the Alameda City Council meeting earlier in March where
approximately 25 members of the public spoke on the proposed plans for Alameda Marina. All
but one were against the development. The City Council will address several issues and revisit
the plan in April.
The Vice Commodore reported proposed changes to the Harbor Policies. Feedback and
discussion will occur at the next Board meeting. Here are the proposed changes:
Guests:
1. Members are responsible for the behavior and safety of their guests while in the
clubhouse or on the docks.
2. Guests are permitted on the dock only when accompanied with a member.
3. Guests are allowed to stay overnight on a member's boat when the member is present.
4. Registered guests of an approved Live Aboard may be on the dock or on the member's
boat even though the member is not present.
5. Guests staying longer than three nights will follow the same policy as Live Aboard
guests.
Also, proposed changes to guest berthing -- Length of Stay and Fees (replacing section 1):
1. Boats from affiliated Reciprocal Yacht Clubs will enjoy the reciprocal privileges
published on the affiliated club's website, policy, or bylaws.
2. Boats from affiliated Reciprocal Yacht Clubs without published reciprocal privileges
will be charged:
A. $30 per night for a boat 30' or less
B. $1 per foot per night for any boat over 30'
The impact of this change is to charge paper clubs for every night. This would establish true
reciprocity for physical clubs. It was suggested some time limit be set to avoid abuse of this
policy.
The new dinghy dock is under construction. The Committee is working to get rid of carpet on the
fingers which is a violation of Harbor policy.
The Rear Commodore reported that off-site storage was rented to store items cleared out of our
on-site storage in order to create a clean office, give the staff more room and Robert a real office.
The office blinds have been installed.
There was no Treasurer’s report. Next month all the details will be shown through Buz.
The General Manager reported that all the berths on Dock 1 have been rented, which is the first
time in a long time that this has happened. Several EYC members have purchased 5.5s and
needed berths to keep them in. There were five total.
In loading the Buz software, Robert noticed a number of people who showed up in our member
roster but were not 'real' members. For one reason or another they had left the Club but were not
removed from the roster. Robert's concern is that our real member count is only 220, which is a
concern.
There was discussion as to whether to allow non-members to rent 28' foot slips. This does not
match policy, but might work for EYC members only. The harbor committee will consider
options in this regard.
Dejah Overby has agreed to take the upstairs supervisory position. She will handle the bar and
the inventory which allows Adam to devote his energies full-time to his new job as office
manager.
Phil Davies, our Measurer, announced that photo day will be April 30/May 1 to coordinate with
the open house. Lee Corkran will be doing the photos. We would like to take pictures of as many
member's boats as possible. Digital copies will also be made.
Wayne Marin, our Membership chair, announced the club will be open from 1 to 4 pm on April
30/May 1 for prospective members with an Open House. Wine and cheese will be available. We
hope to get a lot of member interaction with the prospective members. We will have banners in
front of the club advertising the open house.
We need help manning the Strictly Sail Boat Show in Richmond. Membership will make a new
request via the Blast for specific dates and times needing coverage. Membership considered
giving away custom USB drives at the boat show, but the cost was too high. Chocolates will take
their place.
Jim Conger is offering to do the 'How Sails Really Work' seminar for non-members June 5 as
another way to attract new people (potential members) to come to our club.
Keith Dines, our Port Captain, was not present. Richmond Yacht Club is cruising in this
weekend.
John Ratto, Race Committee, reported that the Sunday Brunch series finishes this Sunday. 20
boats participated. Plus, there were several excellent presentations. The Rights of Spring race fell
on a bad weather day and of the 30 boats signed up, 14 showed up for the race. But lots of people
came in for dinner. The Sweet 16 series starts Wednesday, April 16 th.
Chris Bailey reported the San Rafael cruise out is set in April. Benicia will be May 13/15.
Memorial Day will have two cruise outs.
John Speakman reported the St. Patrick’s Day party will be an Irish themed Friday night dinner.
Saturday, April 9th is the Wine Taster's dinner with a six course meal.
Maggie Sabovich reported that the PICYA Leadership Conference is the day before Easter. They
have seminars with information of interest to clubs. Opening Day on the Bay has a theme of
'Heroes on the Bay' this year. Tuesday May 17 will be a dinner in honor of departing Coast
Guard Captain Greg Stump, who is an OYC member.
Ham Radio Club – Rich Beckett. No report.
Under Old Business, Sam reported that the phone system will soon have a phone and separate
voice mail for all office staff and the chef. The automated voice will be replaced with a real
human being as soon as possible.
The Commodore reported that due to plans to travel Larry Calfee has resigned from the
Nominating Committee. John Egland has kindly agreed to take Larry’s spot.
Resignations and Non-Resident Status:

Roger and Dianne Frizzelle, resigning as cruising members. They had made substantial
contributions to the Club before going cruising. The resignation was accepted by the
Board.

Mike Joyce’s resignation was accepted by the Board.

Dan Nichols sold his boat. His resignation was accepted by the Board.

Dave and Peggie Marshburn. Dave is a past commodore. They had non-resident status
but have now resigned. Their resignation was accepted by the Board.

Bob Paulsen sold his boat and requested non-resident status. Non-resident status was
approved by the Board. Bob graciously volunteered to continue as Seascape editor.

Dan Dionne and Kim Mattos requested non-resident status, although their boat is on the
hard and in dry dock at a local yard. A motion was made by Sam and seconded by Greg
to make an exception to allow non-resident status for this dry storage boat. The Board
approved this motion. John Speakman suggested making this type of arrangement a
formal part of the harbor policy, so that it is not an exception in the future.
Jim Conger gave a demonstration of the new web site. He reported it will be implemented before
the end of March to avoid having to make another payment for support of the old web site.
Members will log in using their new Buz OYC member ID number. The card is being mailed
along with a letter from Commodore Donna Beckett. Email notifications will be sent before the
switch, but we can anticipate Adam getting a number of phone calls from members getting used
to the new login ID.
Once the Buz web page is online the idea is to replace the Blast email system with a Buz-based
news page on the web site. This will reduce the cost and staff workload in maintaining the
weekly updates, but will require that members get used to going to the web site for details rather
than having everything in one big email.
Jim also made two longer term recommendations. One was that we use the Buz web site as our
document repository. Using the office computers has not been successful, and makes the
documents difficult for club members to access. The web site is automatically backed up,
accessible, and a good long-term home for things like bylaws, policies, and so on. The second
was that we need to recognize that a position of 'OYC Web Master' will need to be filled in the
future, much as the Seascape editor position is filled each year. Keeping the web site current
takes continuous effort, and this will be true from now on.
Dan Jones completed an ABYC course and received a certificate qualifying him to test our
marina for galvanic issues.
The House Committee has proposed a policy for how to charge members for events where the
member does not wish to partake in the food service.
A member wishing to attend just the entertainment portion of an event with entertainment will be
required to pay a cover charge. An event with entertainment is defined as an event for which the
full-priced ticket includes an additional charge to cover the cost of the entertainment.
Greg made a motion to accept this change, which was seconded by Jim Labbe. The motion
passed.
The palette for the floor coverings, approved by the House Committee, was displayed. There is a
thick laminate (hardwood) for the bar and downstairs hallway, large tiles for the kitchen area,
and broad carpet for the remaining areas. Greg reported that competitive bidding turned up a
wide range of price quotes. The lowest bid was Carpet One. Two members of the Board
indicated Carpet One had installed carpet in their own homes and had done a good job. Greg
made the motion to authorize the Commodore to place an order for $23,700 with Carpet One of
San Ramon. Phil Davies seconded the motion. The funds for this project are available House
capital budget and the funds are in the House reserve account. Installation will have a lead time
of 3-4 weeks. The actual installation will take about six days. The motion passed with three
opposed.
Carpeting the Regatta Room will cost $2,880, which is $1,519 over the approved budget total for
carpeting. The funds are available in the reserves. Greg made a motion to fund the additional
$1,519 to carpet the Regatta Room. Bill Mohr seconded. The motion passed with two opposed.
Jim Reed requested that his membership be reinstated He has done extensive cruising. Jim
Read’s request was approved followed by The Board of Directors meeting adjournment.
Larry and Pat Calfee had the first meeting of the Dance Club in March and it was a blast. Bob
Chope and Bobbi Johnson showed us all how to do the Cajun Cha Cha. For a couple of hours we
laughed at ourselves, got frustrated that our feet wouldn’t do what they were supposed to do and
then actually did the Cajun Cha Cha. The next get together is Saturday, April 16 where we’ll be
introduced to the West Coast Swing. There’s no charge to be a member of this “Club” and the
reward is a great time. The galley is open and you can get some of Matt’s great food. So come
join the group, learn a new dance step or brush up on one you already know and have a lot of
fun.
Bocce Ball is alive and well at OYC. The next pot luck, where you can play bocce ball and laugh
at what the ball does once you throw it on a carpet, will be Tuesday, April 19 at 5:00.
One Saturday a month I’m available in the Regatta Room for approximately one and a half hours
for any member to come and speak with me about any concern, suggestion, and question,
anything on their mind about our Club. I welcome you all to take advantage of the opportunity,
but by no means want to suggest that that’s the only time you can bring these topics to my
attention. Any form of communication anytime is more than okay with me. The best way for you
to enjoy the Club is to come and participate and whatever I can do to make that participation a
better experience for you and all the other members, please let me know.

Spring forward, and I think everyone is happy it’s staying lighter longer. I sure hope all of our
members had a happy Easter. It’s been a real busy time at the Club, with the systems conversion
from Club Tech to Buz Software. The most difficult parts of the conversion are over, and now
we have an integrated system and all pieces of the puzzle are connected and up and running. This
will give us the ability to have up to date information in all areas of the Club’s operation, and
allow our members to interact with the software. Please take a moment and go into your member
profiles and make sure all your information is current, and accurate. Please give us a call if you
have any questions, or need any assistance navigating the new website. I want to recognize
Adam and Cameron for their countless hours of work, which has allowed us to finish our system
conversion in the office. And also Jim Conger, for the hard work in getting our new web site up
and running. Please be aware there will be a few glitches, and we will clean them up as we go.
So what else is going on?, Your Club has been very active on and off the water, with the Sunday
Brunch Series wrapping up, visiting Clubs cruise-ins, and daily dinning, there is a lot happening
around the Club. Your BoD has approve new flooring for the Club, and this will have a big
impact on member usage, attracting new members, enhancing member dinning, and boosting
catering activities. If you been to the Club recently, I’m sure you noticed the office has been
updated, which will allow us to be more accurate in all our transactions, and at the same time
creates a friendly and professional environment. The last couple of months have been very
productive, and beneficial for our Club’s ability to attract new members and retain our current
members as we push forward into the future.
We have added a new member to our OYC team; Dejah Overby has come on board to manage
the front of the house upstairs. She comes with a lot of experience and will ensure that our
members are well taken care of when they come to enjoy a meal, or a cold beverage at the Club.
Now that Thursday’s are up and running, do not forget that the Bar is now open on Saturday’s
servicing a bar menu, and your favorite beverage. The hours are from noon until three, and yes
dollar beers are offered on Saturday’s. Please stop by and welcome Dejah, and let her know how
we can better service you. The Wine Society meets once a month, and now the Calfee’s have
started the Dance Club. The Dance Club meets once a month, and the next meeting is on
Saturday April 16th. If you have an idea for a Club with-in the Club, please drop by and let’s see
if we can make it happen.
Memorial Day is right around the corner, and summer will be here before you know it. Time
flies when you’re having fun, and that is exactly what is happening at the Club. The entire staff is
here to help you in any way we can. So please come down and say hello. It’s your Club so enjoy
it!
Vice Commodore Sam LaVanaway

The year is going fast. I am still unpacking at the new homestead and
wishing I could be sailing when I come to the club instead of going to
meetings. But what a great start to the new year.
The harbor is full of Columbia 5.5 and dock 1 is full! With the rain some
repairs were slowed but the spring sunshine should allow us to get back
on schedule. Speaking of rain, the San Francisco Boat Show was cancelled, but the Strictly Sail
is going on in its new location.
I think help is still needed staffing our booth. The new location in Crane Pavilion and Marina
Bay Yacht Harbor at Point Richmond should be a great venue. I will be there Sunday and look
forward to meeting several new OYC members there.
Before I forget, the Harbor Committee will start meeting on the second Tuesday of the month.
That means the next meeting April 12. We welcome members to come and learn about what the
committee is working on. See you at the club.
Rear Commodore Greg Lonie

As the weather continues to improve, participation at the Club continues
to increase. Attendance for dinner on Friday nights continues to grow.
We have attended several dinners this month, and really enjoyed
catching up with friends we haven’t seen for a while, and especially
enjoyed the meals that our chef, Matt and his staff have been producing! The filet mignon, crab
and shrimp stuffed sole, creamy avocado pasta, were really good, and I have been told that the
specialty entrée salads have been fantastic. If you haven’t been to the Club for a meal recently, I
encourage you to stop by. With lunch available Wednesday, comfort food on Thursday nights,
dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, bar snacks on Saturday afternoons, and brunch on
Sundays, there are plenty of opportunities to dine at the Club. Matt has also shown great
flexibility in preparing meals for members with dietary restrictions, all you have to do is ask!
As promised, Robert provided three bids from reputable companies for the replacement of the
flooring in the Club. The House Committee reviewed the quotes, decided on a vendor, and the
Board approved the choice. The contract has been signed and delivered, and by the time this
published we should have an installation schedule for the work. With our Open House just
around the corner, we are working closely with the flooring contractor to schedule the work prior
to April 30th.
Our Open House the weekend of April 30th and May 1st will be an important opportunity for
OYC to attract new members. It would be great to see as many of our club members as possible
at the club, enjoying our wonderful facility and the comradery that keeps all of us dedicated to
OYC. As all private clubs are finding, it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract new
members. OYC is no exception, but I think we have a lot more to offer than many of our
competitors, including great members. I encourage all of you to please make time during this
weekend to visit the club, and share your experiences with potential new members.
For those of you that have been to the our club recently, you will notice that we once again have
table numbers to reference when ordering meals, and they look really nice in their new holders.
Thanks Judy Labbe, and the House Committee for a fine job resolving this issue!
There have been many changes in the office this month as well. As you know, the Buz software
is up and running, however not without a few bumps in the road, which is to be expected with a
system change of this magnitude. Robert, Cameron, Adam, and many member volunteers have
dedicated an enormous amount of time and energy to implement the changes to the office
systems and procedures, as well as the website. Their efforts are paying off in streamlined
procedures that will ultimately increase the efficiency of the staff, and allow for better
communication with the membership. The other night a member ordered a drink, and by the
time he returned to our table, he was showing me his current club charges, inclusive of the drink
he had in his hand, on his smart phone! There will be a lot of useful information available to the
membership with the deployment of the new website. Thanks to all who are involved in this
much needed implementation!
Robert moved into his new office this month, and with the addition of Dejah to the bar area,
Adam will be able to focus all of his time to his position as Office Manager. We were able to get
the new blinds installed in the office as well. Thanks to Michelle Leonard for her efforts in
completing the installation. The office is looking much nicer!
Memory bricks are still available! This is a great opportunity to create a lasting memory for
future generations of club members and guests. As an added incentive, the cost of the bricks will
be discounted by 10% starting in January. Order forms for the memory bricks are available in
front of the office area.
Hope to see all of you enjoying the Club! With the addition of many activities like the Wine
Club, Bocce Ball, and the new Dance Club, there is plenty to do at OYC! Be sure to stop by!
Cruise Committee Chair – John Egland

Forget Spring Cleaning; Let’s Talk Spring Cruising
Spring is in the air and sunshine is all around. It’s a great time to get
out, get on your boat, and enjoy the company of your friends at OYC.
March was a little hit and miss for us. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and we had to
scrub the trip to Sausalito for the tour of the Bay Model. We’re hoping Len and Barbara will be
able to reschedule that for later in the year. Even though it didn’t happen, we appreciate
everything Len and Barbara did to get this trip ready. They did just about everything but take the
actual trip. Thanks Barbara and Len.
On the other side of the coin was the cruise out to St. Francis YC
that Denny and Dan Stoup managed. It was a great weekend for a
cruise out and St. Francis is always a treat. The St. Francis YC
Dockmaster, Chase Bargemann, was a big help in getting the
boats situated and all reports are that dinner was only out done by
the magnificent view from the club. As usual, dinner was
preceded by a fun happy hour on the docks.
Coming up in April, we have two special cruise outs. The first, April 22 to 24, is a trip to San
Rafael YC. This is the same weekend as Opening Day on The Bay, so, on the trip home, on
Sunday, April 24, people can plan to swing by and join the rest of the OYC fleet in the parade
along the San Francisco waterfront. Stay tuned to the Blast for updates on channel and harbor
depths. The sign up has been posted on the new website. If any issues signing up on-line please
let me know.
April is a busy month at OYC and in the San Francisco Bay boating world in general. As such,
most of the weekends have some kind of other activity going on. So, at the end of the month,
we’re bringing together the experience of cruising out and participating in a major club event.
On Saturday, April 30, OYC will host an Open House. In conjunction with that, we’ll be having
a Cruise In to OYC. If you keep your boat at another marina, bring it on over that weekend for a
little get away and stay at the guest dock. If you have a boat in the marina and have never spent
a weekend aboard or seldom get a chance to, make this the weekend for a retreat.
Along with staying aboard, we’ll have many of the regular events we have on a cruise out: happy
hour on the dock, dinner at the host club, and the usual, and at times unusual, impromptu
activities that happen on a cruise out. The OYC Open House is a great opportunity to show
prospective members how engaged you, as members, are in your club. See you there.
A quick note on May: May will be a busy month for cruising. Look for upcoming information
on a trip to Benicia the weekend of May 13- 15 and on two Memorial Day weekend cruises: the
traditional trip to Coyote Point YC and, what’s becoming a new tradition, a trip up the river to
Petaluma. All promise a great deal of fun.

Our SUNDAY BRUNCH SERIES has
completed with our final race on March
20th. This year we extended to a 7 race
series and it appears to us that it worked!
Race 6 started with a seminar on Light Wind and Estuary Sailing by
Kame Richards. Kame also shared information about The Alameda
Community Sailing Center (ACSC). ACSC is a 501c3 not for profit
organization founded by a local group of sailing enthusiasts to open
sailing to the Alameda and East Bay Community. Yvonne Wigman, a student of ACSC, joined
in by passing the hat and raising around $350 for the program.
The start of the race found us with good wind but a threat of rain. Undaunted the races got off
without delay and all the racers finished before the rain hit. Then back to the Club for prizes, a
drink and a warm chowder. And to keep the party rolling, Emile Carles, skipper of Lelo Too,
expanded the fun, with his crew celebrating his 89th birthday and sharing that celebration with all
the racers!
The last race of the Series, March 20th, provided us with winds
at 8-12 knots, and squalls passing through, before the start and
throughout the race. We had a reasonable turn-out, with 17
boats on the line and most all the racers up at the Club after for
a great Taco Bar, and Race #7 and Series prizes. The Columbia
5.5 Fleet continues to build and rumor has it, there will be more
than the 5 currently racing, by the Sweet 16 Series.
On Saturday, March 12 the
Rites of Spring race was run.
There was a small craft
advisory posted early in the
day with the threat of rain and
building winds. As boats were
headed out to the start near the
Berkeley Pier, wind was in the
high teens. With 30 boats
signed up for the race, 15 made the line. The winds were strong, blowing steady in the 20s, with
gusts to 30. It was a wild day racing on the bay, with the race finishing at OYC. After the race,
racers turned out to share and swap experience, prizes, drinks and a great Irish themed menu.
WHAT’s NEXT? You got it… Sweet 16 Race Series starts Wednesday, April 27. It’s a great
way to break up the week, race, and hang out with fellow boaters.

Holder 12 Racing News
March was just too busy on the racing calendar with two Sunday Brunch Races and the Rites of
Spring, and so the March Holder races will be held on Sunday, April 3, and the April races will
be three weeks later, on Sunday, April 24.
All are welcome. We race off the OYC docks, and because
we share the boats, you do not need a boat to race. Join us
and sail a few races to see if you like it. The entry fee
couldn't be lower, and the trophy is . . . well, unusual. The
first race each day will start about 1300; come to Dock 3
about noon to help rig the boats; bring a PFD and some
knee pads (volleyball knee pads work fine and are about
$10 at Big 5).

Happy Spring to everyone!
We had a fun Saint Patrick's Day Celebration at the club with great Irish food and of course lots
of green beer flowing! It was fun to see all the green outfits and hats roaming around.
The Easter Sunday Brunch was a great success. The Te Struth family had a blast hunting for
Easter eggs that were hidden by our Commodore / Easter Bunny Donna Beckett.
If you haven't been to a Thursday Night Comfort Food Dinner you really should come on down.
Chef Matt does a great job with all those comforting meals we all love complete with a yummy
dessert.
Looking down the road on our calendar Cinco de Mayo will be on a Thursday Comfort Food
night and we will have a fun fiesta that night at the Club! So mark your calendars for May 5th

our Club so special. We hope to see you soon at the Club!
Here’s an important note from the Membership Chair
We would like to invite all members and friends to the Boat Show on April 7- 10th
from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We have now filled all the volunteer spots for the booth at the
Show. We thank each member for giving of their time and especially Maggie for
coordinating the shifts and people, and Michelle, for putting the booth together with Marya.
It should be a great time to hopefully get some new prospective members to attend the
Open House, April 31 and May 1.
The Open House will be in conjunction with the boat picture days from 1-4:00 PM. Last
names from A - M will be Saturday and N – Z on Sunday. IF you have any problem with
the day come the other. There will be live music each day. We would enjoy having as
many members stay around to help meet and greet the prospective members and welcome
them to the club.
This will be the biggest event for the club, so let’s come out for the club and enjoy each
day!! -- Wayne Martin, Membership Chair

OYC's New Buz-Based Web Page Goes Live
Jim Conger – OYC web master
On March 24 Erik Jones pulled the plug on the old OYC web page by pointing the address
oaklandyachtclub.net to our new Buz Software-based web page. Instant update for all of us!
There are a lot of changes from the old web page, but I think you will like them. Some of the
biggest changes are:
1) There is a complete separation between what the public sees and what members see after they
log in. The public side is designed to entice new people to join (many thanks to Anne Jacobson
for getting the messages just right in this section). The private side is just for us – we use it for
just about anything we want to do.
***The public face of oaklandyachtclub.net
2) The private side integrates with the back office, so your club statements are current to within
about a minute. For example, if you order dinner and some drinks you can check that the billing
was correct by the time you reach your table to sit down!
3) The whole web site works well from a smart phone, tablet or computer. All the content gets
rearranged to fit the device, so the menu items and images change form as appropriate. About
one third of our web traffic is from mobile devices, and we expect that fraction to grow quickly.
***The Member-Only face of oaklandyachtclub.net after you log in
4) Michelle Leonard has moved the entire racing web activity over to the Buz site. This is
important because racing generates a lot of traffic from non-members, some of whom might just
want to join.
You will find some familiar things on the member side, such as menus, the online calendar and
the current and past issues of Seascape. There are new things such an expanded News section,
updated member photos and videos, and a live member blog.
To get access to all of this you must log in. Your login ID is your four digit member ID, so if you
new Buz member number (on your ID card) is 80, your login ID is 0080. Your initial password is
that same four digits. Here's what you need to do right away:
1) Go to oaklandyachtclub.net in our browser (ID, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.)
2) Click the 'Members Only' button at the top right corner. The login screen will pop up.
3) Enter your four-digit ID number for the ID and password.
4) Click the 'Update Profile' button to open up your personal information
5) Edit all of your personal information, such as your phone number, email address,
spouse/partner's name, and so on.
6) Be sure to change your password which is on the 'Access' tab.
7) Click the 'Save My Information' button at the bottom of the screen.
We are always looking for new content to keep the web site fresh. There is a 'Contacts' menu
item that lists the current contacts that maintain the site. Here are today's assignments:

In 2017, a fleet of turbo-charged 12- meter mono-hulls will compete on San Francisco Bay
for $500,000 in prize money in one design “Super 12’s”, with carbon fiber hulls and decks,
modern rigs, and minimum electronics, placing emphasis on sailing skills and teamwork.
The “Super 12’s” will be built from the same female mold by the same builder, all rigging
and deck hardware will be identical, and each team will use the same restricted sail
inventories. Instrumentation is limited to just a handheld GPS, a VHF radio, a depth
sounder, a compass and a Windex.

PICYA’s 2016 “Opening Day on the Bay” is scheduled for Sunday, April 24 th, and this year’s
theme is “Heroes on the San Francisco Bay”, which may refer to Military Heroes, Historical
Heroes, Bay Area Innovators, Inspirational Figures, Acts of Bravery on the Bay, fictional SuperHeroes. Emergency Service Providers, etc.
OYC members can decorate their boats to these themes or with flags and streamers and
participate in the parade to earn the OYC up to 50 Club of the Year Points or can also bring
friends and family members along to view the waterfront boat parade from the PICYA
Committee Boat, which provides breakfast and lunch aboard a Hornblower Yacht which
accommodates 200 guests. Cost for this cruise is $80 for adults and $40 for children ages 2-12 up
to March 31st. After that date an additional charge of $5.00 will be added. Information and
registration forms about entering your boat in the decorated boat parade or cruising along the San
Francisco waterfront is on the PICYA website at www.picya.org.
PICYA member clubs will also be donating prizes and/or money for the 16 winning boats in
each category, so the OYC will be providing our usual logo tee shirts, hats and wine for the
Opening Day Decorated Boat Parade Winner’s Award Bags as we usually do.
The PICYA Board of Directors held a brainstorming “retreat” in February at the Encinal Yacht
Club, and one of the new projects resulting from that gathering is a new online monthly PICYA
newsletter called the “PICYA Navigator”, which is designed to provide member yacht clubs with
information about current PICYA and PICYA member club events. This newsletter will be emailed out on Tuesday mornings one week after each monthly PICYA Delegates’ meeting,
which will provide a week to gather information from the Delegates’ meeting, plus information
about upcoming events from our member clubs.
Member clubs can e-mail event information and invitations for their respective club events to
PICYAnews@gmail.com on the Friday following each Delegates’ meeting. PICYA Rear
Commodore Winston Bumpus (Sequoia YC) is the inaugural Editor of this new publication,
which appeared for the first time on March 14, 2016.
The OYC will be hosting a celebratory New Orleans Cajun Style Farewell Dinner for OYC
members Coast Guard Captain Greg Stump and his wife Leigh-Ann, on Tuesday, May 17, 2016,
with PICYA and OYC co-sponsoring this event. Greg will be moving on to the Pentagon from
his three year post here on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, and we will all hate to see Greg and
Leigh-Ann leave us, but wish him the best in his new position! Dinner registration information
will follow soon. Cost for the dinner will be $25.00.
The next PICYA Delegates Dinner meeting will be held at the Pittsburg Yacht Club on Monday,
April 4th, 2016.
PICYA Regional Affairs Issues:
PICYA Regional Affairs Chair/OYC PICYA Delegate Maggie Sabovich has been working with
a local Alameda organization called “SAWW”, or “Save Alameda’s Working Waterfront”, since
December 2015, in order to prevent a residential development of 500+ units at the historic
Alameda Marina, which is the location of Svendsen’s Boat Works, Boat Yard, Boat Transport,
and Marine store, plus many other marine service companies that provide multiple services to the
Bay Area boating community.
Svendsen’s business is called “Pacific Shops” and it also oversees a 530 berth marina, a 700+
boat dry dock, and the only 3 ton crane in the central Bay, plus a huge RV facility for boat
owners. In addition, Alameda Marina houses the Island Yacht Club, along with 60 total
businesses employing 250 people. This Committee has been working with The City of Alameda
City Council and City Staff to change the current zoning regulations so that all of the current
businesses can remain. Bay West Development, which bought into Pacific Shops in 2006, wants
all the businesses to be razed by next year, to make room for this residential development, so we
have a substantial challenge facing the Committee.
Most recently 25 supporters in favor keeping the Alameda Marina as is, spoke before the
Alameda City Council in support of favorable zoning changes, and waited until after 11 PM at
the February meeting of the City Council to speak. More committee members are needed, so
anyone interested in saving this historic marina, please contact Maggie Sabovich at
mksabovich@yahoo.com.
