Honeywell Announces Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)
140-2 Certification for Xenon 1902 Wireless Area-Imaging Scanners
This notice serves as formal communication that Honeywell Scanning & Mobility’s Xenon 1902 access point and
charge/communication base are now FIPS 140-2 certified.

On January 8, 2012, Honeywell’s Xenon 1902 Bluetooth -enabled scanning solutions received FIPS 140-2 certification.
The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 is a security accreditation program for cryptographic modules
and is controlled by the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). US federal government departments (e.g.,
VA Hospitals and the Department of Defense) that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate "sensitive, but not
classified” information must use FIPS-Validated cryptographic modules for the protection of data.
Only solutions with FIPS 140-2 certification will be able to access the government market. Solutions lacking the
certification are not qualified for sale into US government departments.
Effects on System Integration:
FIPS firmware resides on the cordless area-imaging scanners and access point / charge/communication base and wired
communication is sent to the host after decrypting. Consequently, FIPS is invisible to the host in this application.
Operation of scanners utilizing FIPS will be no different than non-FIPS scanners, unless there is a mismatched scanner /
base (FIPS / non-FIPS). If this occurs, the user will hear a warning beep.
