Welcome
Welcome to the following new pupils:
From the Principal
Kia Ora Koutou
Last Thursday we held our 2016 Ultimate Challenge. The feedback I’ve
had from parents, staff and children has all been extremely positive. The
day was obviously a lot of fun with a huge number of opportunities for
our older children to learn and demonstrate leadership skills and for
everyone to learn about the importance of teamwork.
Our Year 7 and 8 children showed wonderful leadership skills as they
guided their teams throughout the day and in the weeks leading up to the
event. There were many examples of our older children living and role
modelling our values of respect, empathy, excellence, responsibility and
integrity.
One comment that I’ve heard repeated often was that there was a real
sense of calm throughout the day. This is amazing given that there were
over 770 children in 65 teams involved. The Ultimate Challenge was
clearly a fantastically coordinated and well planned day, so a huge thank
you must go to our organising committee of Lena Going, Lara Plumtree,
Jules Hayman and Trish Blacktop. Thanks also to the parents who helped
out on the day, we couldn’t have managed without you.
Any additional or altered dates will be highlighted in
yellow each week
A thought to share with your children:
“Unless you’re willing to have a go, fail miserably, and have another go, success won’t happen.” (Phillip Adams)

School News
In Memoriam - Mrs Dale Golder 1936 – 2016
It is with much regret and fond memories that we share the news that Mrs Dale Golder passed away peacefully on
Wednesday 30 March at Te Hopai Hospital.
Mrs Golder was a well-respected teacher at Karori Normal School from 1985 – 2001. She held the position of Associate
Principal/Senior Teacher of Junior Classes.
Mrs Golder was known for her passion for Reading and Writing and was a warm and welcoming person for the parents
and new children to our Junior School. We remember her freehand kiwi and owls adorning many of the children’s
work as acknowledgement of their efforts.
During her time here, she effectively oversaw many educational changes and Mrs Golder will be affectionately
remembered by the many parents and children from the Karori Normal School community.
A memorial service is to be held on Wednesday 20 April at 2pm at the Old Saint Paul’s Church, 34 Mulgrave Street,
Thorndon.
School Road Patrols
Each week we will publish the names of the two children who will be on road patrol duties for the week. Please check
and ensure you know when you are on duty. This is very important. Any queries contact Andrea Peetz –
apeetz@kns.school.nz.

Gala News
Gardening on Saturday 9 April at 2pm
The gardening stall for the School Gala is starting up again this year. We need pots! Please save small or large plastic pots
for us (eg. the ones you buy herbs or flowers in), If you would like to help pot up strawberry plants, a group of us are
meeting to put strawberries in pots on Saturday afternoon 9 April, bring your kids for a play. No experience necessary – its
really easy and quite sociable. We are also meeting on Saturday 7 May at 2pm to take cuttings from hydrangeas and pot up
mondo grass. Please feel free to join us for this. We have a number of jobs that you could help with – watering plants,
collecting cardboard boxes nearer the time, growing plants or joining in with planting sessions. We need all sorts – some of
us are working full time and so our planting sessions are usually weekend afternoons once a month or Wednesday evenings
at 7pm closer to the time. We are a friendly group and it doesn’t matter if you can’t come every time.
Please email abbiemilburn@yahoo.co.uk for the address for dropping off pots and / or to join in with the gardening sessions.
