YWCA Academy of Diversity Achievers Award
Individuals selected to the YWCA Academy
of Diversity Achievers have directly helped
in the YWCA mission of eliminating racism
and empowering women by participating
and supporting programs which promote and
embrace diversity, supporting opportunities for
women’s growth and leadership or the person
embodies the spirit of peace, justice, freedom,
and dignity.
Ryan Beauford
Chauncey D. Brown
Tom Burton
There is no way to adequately measure
the depth of Ryan’s impact on Syracuse
University students. How many young
men and women has he embraced and
supported? How many has he advised
and encouraged to make wise and
productive choices? How many has
he taught respect by showing respect?
Ryan is the quintessential example of
grace and dignity in action—quiet,
positive, yet forceful action.
During his seven-month tenure as
Men’s Outreach Program Coordinator,
Chauncey has become a visible
example of male leadership in
ending violence in our community.
Chauncey expanded the breadth of
Vera House’s “12 Men Model” and has
recruited several men to challenge
their attitudes toward violence. With
Chauncey’s leadership, Vera House
hopes to continue this important
dialogue.
Tom’s work in diversity is exemplified
through his work with many diverse
constituencies to advance the College
mission. Working with individuals
and groups and their widely different
backgrounds, cultures, interests,
goals and expectations, he strives
to promote education as a tool
to empower all people, from all
backgrounds, to transform their lives.

Onondaga Community College
Hui Chen
Program Associate
Onondaga Community College
Helping others has always given Hui
a great sense of pleasure. During the
past five years, she has been diligent
in her efforts to provide high quality
academic and supportive services and
cultural programming to the students
of Onondaga Community College, as
well as the residents of the Central
New York community.
Pamela Crane
Marybeth Dutter
Pam has coached and mentored
diverse staff at two branch libraries.
She has continually fostered
an atmosphere of respect and
encouragement for members of
her team that goes well beyond
differences in race and gender.
Pam recognizes the importance of
connecting with the communities
she serves and the importance of
including all people and realizes
that this begins with embracing the
talents of a diverse work force.
Despite her heavy workload, Mrs.
Marybeth Dutter takes the time to
deal with a constant flood of staff and
job seekers looking for information,
mentoring and leadership in a
sincere and welcoming manner.
Her volunteer work as Coordinator
for the Deacon’s Wives Roman
Catholic Diocese, and sponsor of
multiple programs such as Northwest
Community Center, Samaritan Center,
Unity Kitchens and St. Joseph’s
Hospital is phenomenal.
Branch Manager
Onondaga County Public Library,
Beauchamp Branch
Assistant to the Director
Onondaga Community College,
JOBSPlus! Program
Jerry Farnett
Evening Coordinator/Extended Learning
Onondaga Community College
Mr. Farnett has been an instrument for positive change on campus. His
awareness of student issues has served to unite OCC students and employees
to address food and clothing shortages faced by many. His prior experience in
New York City makes him a good contact in helping students acclimate to life
away from home.
Richard M. Litz
Manager, Hospital Purchasing and Central Stores
Upstate Medical University
In support of Upstate’s strategic plan to commit to the community and increase
community partnerships, Mr. Litz led efforts to organize a SUNY Central Region
Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise Summit (MWBE).
The summit successfully brought together representatives from nine SUNY
campuses to meet with MWBE’s in the local community to discuss current and
future procurement opportunities.
Michele Malone
Human Resources Administrator
Lockheed Martin MS2-Syracuse
Michele Malone’s participation in activities that promote diversity and inclusion
positively impact many people. The community and Lockheed Martin benefit
from her involvement with the NAACP, the New York State Fair Pan African
Village and the Lockheed Martin Cultural Alliance Network. Her efforts build
awareness to help create an inclusive environment.
Theresa Pagano
Program Facilitator, CEO, Founder
Partners in Learning Inc. West Side Learning Center
Theresa Pagano, founder of West Side Learning Center and MANOS Early
Education program, has many reasons to be proud. Last year, 100% of the
MANOS children entered kindergarten prepared to succeed and 800+ WSLC
adults, representing 41 countries, improved their English language skills and
engaged in training and employment services to
become active in their new community.
Thomas K. Pelis
Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Planning
SUNY Upstate Medical University
In the past two years, the number of minority and women businesses
performing work for professional design and construction projects at Upstate
has more than doubled. The percentage of total expenditures has increased
from approximately three percent to more than ten percent. Tom has provided
valuable leadership toward helping Upstate achieve its strategic goal of
investing in our community and building community partnerships.
Rev. William Redfield
Rector
Trinity Episcopal Church
Rev. Redfield has worked tirelessly to build bridges of understanding among
Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, and others. In a time when people of various
faith communities are under suspicious scrutiny and undue attack leading to
the unfortunate oppression of Muslims and Sikhs, Rev. Redfield has stood as a
beacon of peace, justice, and dignity for all.
Jackie Robinson
News Anchor
WSTM-TV
A generation of Central New Yorkers has watched Jackie on the evening news.
Her reach as a role model even convinced the New York State Education
Department to change its Regents Exam when students described her instead
of the baseball player as their Jackie Robinson answer. Besides “being there” on
daily newscasts, Jackie has a personal commitment to helping young people
visualize goals and seeing that they can be more than dreams.
Flora Rockburn
Customer Service Coordinator
Carrier Corporation, United Technologies
Flora has made a difference for nearly 20 years as a volunteer working with
many diverse organizations including Vera House, Francis House, Samaritan
Center and Seymour School, to name a few. As an advocate for peace, freedom,
dignity and equality to all, her commitment and tireless energy to those less
fortunate helps bring hope to all who come in contact with her.
Kelly Rodoski
Communications Manager, News Services
Syracuse University
Kelly has grace, understanding, acceptance, and kindness. She believes and
lives respect for every person and works for the dignity and equitability of each
person. Her impact is quiet and constant; many describe feeling better by just
being around her. Her commitment to justice and acceptance impacts the
entire university community as well as her colleagues and community.
Her goodness is contagious and unmistakable.
Diane M. Stefani
Human Resources Director
Lockheed Martin MS2-Syracuse
Diane embraces diversity and inclusion. Her commitment is evident through
her work with numerous affinity groups, especially the Diversity Council.
In addition to being involved in initiatives to overcome age, gender, and racial
biases, she promotes career events that broaden perspectives and promotes an
overall corporate culture that is always seeking to understand
and appreciate employee differences.
Katherine M. Teasdale-Edwards
School Counselor for Special Education Transition
Syracuse City School District
Katherine’s persistence in launching the first Project Search program in
New York State is a testament to her commitment to providing vocational
opportunities to young people with disabilities as well as employment
opportunities that would not have otherwise been available to them. It has
given participants an opportunity to showcase their invaluable skills in the
workplace and has had an enormous impact at University Hospital in enhancing
appreciation for diversity.
Christine Vogelsang
Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
Syracuse City School District
Christine Vogelsang has dedicated her career as an educator to working with
students who are often faced with obstacles few of us could imagine. She
refuses to let issues of race become a barrier to a student’s success. Chris has
made it her priority to see that all students receive a quality education and has
worked tirelessly to ensure equity among them.
Talisha Wright
Team Member, Radar Systems
Lockheed Martin MS2-Syracuse
Talisha is an example of a woman over-achiever. She has demonstrated
exceptional commitment to the Cultural Alliance Network Group. Talisha
is a catalyst whose energy and enthusiasm is contagious. She organizes,
participates in, and supports an inclusive attitude that seeps into everyone
around her.

YWCA Diversity Workshops
A. Disability Awareness: In The Workplace & Beyond
People with disabilities live and work in all corners of our community.
While they strive to be treated as equals, misconceptions and
stereotypes abound: “How should I talk to a person with a disability?” and
“What if I say or do the wrong thing?” are just a couple of the common
questions that arise from often well-intended people. This interactive
session will offer time for insight and reflection on the topic of disability,
and offer tips and strategies for working and living with persons with
disabilities in our community.
Jeffrey Tamburo, Coordinator of Employment Services, Enable
B. Communication @ Work
The purpose of this workshop is to help participants understand
interpersonal communication in a workplace context. Professor
Muhammad founded the John F. X. Mannion Lecture Series at OCC
as part of his course, Communication @ Work. The Series’ speakers,
diverse leaders from a variety of fields and organizations in Central New
York, understand the importance of communication in their everyday
work life. Professor Muhammad and his students will share some of the
communication lessons culled from this year’s speakers.
Mark Muhammad, Assistant Professor, Onondaga Community College
C. The Global Workplace: The Rewards And Challenges
Of Integrating New Americans Into Your Organization
For generations, Syracuse has been a melting pot for immigrants and
refugees from all over the world. Italians, Germans, Irish, Vietnamese,
and Africans from many countries have all been welcomed into the
Syracuse community and enriched it by their culture and traditions. One
of the critical phases of resettlement is finding meaningful employment
for new arrivals. In this workshop, we will explore the community
resources dedicated to helping refugees become self-sufficient and how
their unique skills and talents enrich our businesses.
