HC CAMPUS LOOK IS CHANGING
If you haven’t been to Holy Cross lately, it
is worth a look! Over the past 15 years various benefactors have bought properties on
Church Street and 36th Street and donated
them to the high school. The Spencer
House, donated by Mike Spencer, ‘77 was
the first acquisition that took place when the
Academic Enhancement Program was
started and needed a home. The first floor
Three Houses recently razed
of the Spencer House was converted into 3
classrooms and students in the AEP would
report to “the house” for one period a day, where they would receive help in the areas that
were necessary for them. The second floor former bedrooms were offices for AEP, Mr.
Goller and the Development Office. A couple of years later, the house on the corner became available and Ted and Janet Arlinghaus purchased the home, completely renovated it
to be used as a meeting space with offices on the top floor. The beautifully restored home
is still standing and is used primarily for meetings. Mr. Eifert’s office is on the second floor.
The Shafer House, the fourth house on the block, was the next home that became available and was purchased by Ed ‘60 and Barb Shafer and donated to Holy Cross. The Shafer
House became the Student Council meeting place, makeshift chapel and housed Guidance
offices for a few years. Next was the current Toebben House, which was purchased by Mr.
& Mrs. Matth. Toebben and donated to Holy Cross. After a complete renovation engineered by parent Paul Jasper and finished by almost completely volunteer work, the Toebben House is the current Academic Enhancement House with 3 gigantic classrooms, a computer lab, athletic director’s office and guidance offices. What a spectacular building! In
2012, Ralph and Irma Drees purchased and donated the Drees House that sits directly
across from the “old building” and was formerly owned by the Sullivan family and home to
their linoleum company. The Drees House was converted into The Indian Hut on the left
and the Development Office on the right as you look at it from Church Street. Last year, the
final home on the block across from school was purchased and donated by Ted & Janet Arlinghaus. The purpose this time was not for additional classroom space, but for temporary
green space and a dream of what it might
become. Once the final building was in hand,
the Diocese requested that the properties
that were no longer in use, be razed to prevent vandalism and danger. During the summer of 2013 the request was met!
Thanks to the many volunteers who were
part of this monumental process. Parent Bill
Hemmer was invaluable in helping with the
demolition of the properties at HC. Because

Graduation
From The Principal
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
As we opened the school year the students noticed a few changes to the campus. The three houses across from the high school building were taken down, as
well as the church that was located on 36th Street. Once the bell rang we opened
the school year by dismissing to church and having our traditional opening blessing. At the blessing we introduced our theme for the year which is “We are the
Light of the World”. We talked about the challenge of the reading: “Your light
must shine before all others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
heavenly Father.” This means that we must take action so that we may lead others by what we do, and as the school year has progressed our students have embraced the challenge and been the light for others to see.
We have had a great start to the school year with many events taking place. Our festival was a wonderful
success due to the hard work of our festival committee and to all of those who volunteered to work and those
who came to enjoy two beautiful evenings of fun. The “Taste of Latonia”, wine tasting, live bands and the addition of craft beer tasting drew even bigger crowds. It was a wonderful weekend filled with a great deal of
fun and friendship.
At the end of September our seniors attended the Diocesan Senior Mass at the Cathedral. I was very proud
of our seniors in the way that they represented Holy Cross High School by their reverence and participation in
the Mass. The senior class has embraced the leadership role of the school and been vital in the success of the
school year.
To all who participated in last year’s annual appeal who are honored in this issue of the newsletter I would
like to expend a sincere thank you. Without your loyalty and commitment to Holy Cross, we would not be able
to fulfill our mission of providing a quality Catholic education for our students. The appeal funds help school to
retain our excellent teaching staff, improve technology in our classrooms and most importantly to help keep
tuition as affordable as possible for our families.
I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a special thanks to The Tony and Marylyn Verst Family,
who are serving as chairpersons for the 2013-14 Annual Appeal. The Verst family has a longstanding commitment to Holy Cross High School with three generations who have graduated from Holy Cross. They not only
left a positive mark during their time as students, but continue their dedication to our school to this day. An
additional goal this year is to increase the annual appeal so that we will be able to air condition the gym.
I look forward to the rest of the school year, and I thank you for your commitment to Holy Cross High
School. We are proud the be Holy Cross, and just as the cross of Jesus stood on the hill for whole world to see,
we will be the light at Holy Cross for all to see.
Sincerely,
Mike Holtz

INDIAN SUMMER FESTIVAL
YEAR 2 OF WINE TASTING AND “TASTE OF LATONIA”
Beautiful weather, great music, plenty of food and drinks and a huge crowd! Another successful festival and
John Zurborg and his committee can again be commended! Great Job
Chairperson John Zurborg ’84, his wife Susan and their children McKenzie, Ryan, Jillian and Abby along with
faculty coordinators, Mike Holtz, Scott Reed, Sarah Lepping, Tina Feldman, and many student and adult volunteers worked hard to continue the tradition they began last year and there were no disappointments! Church
Street was closed between Southern and 36th Street, where a band performed each night and local vendors
from Green Lantern, Giuseppe’s, Skyline, Sweet Frog, Original Wok, Bard’s Burgers, Bock’s Bar & Grill, Latonia
LaRosa’s, Knights of Columbus and Backstage Café offered their food specialties to the festival goers. Redman’s
Farm Winery and Elk Creek Vineyard offered samples of their favorite wines. The 2013 Indian Summer Festival was even bigger, better and more well attended than last year’s new version!
Special thanks to Major Sponsors Stagnaro Distributing and Skilcraft. Thanks to all of the booth sponsors
and to those who attended, sold tickets or prayed for good weather.

ART STUDENT’S WORK ON DISPLAY AT HC
Biology and Psychology teacher Jill Hunt shared these pictures of murals drawn by
Tyler Lubbers ‘09. Tyler worked in his free time to paint the murals on the wall of Ms.
Hunt’s Biology lab/classroom. It took many hours of volunteer service and Tyler did a
great job!
Tyler also was responsible for the cover of the 2009 yearbook cover that features
Mr. Eifert. His name was omitted from the yearbook cover and we wanted to set the
record straight.
Great Job, Tyler! ...and thanks!

of his experience, he was able to guide us through the regulations
and permit process. His contacts in the field helped us contract a
conscientious and affordable demolition company. Equally important was his willingness to give of his time. He spent many days at
HC in preparation for the project , as utilities had to be disconnected
and properties had to be emptied of debris. Without his guidance
and assistance, the project would have been much more difficult.
We would be remiss if we did not mention that three additional

What’s in store for Holy Cross High School? With your support, the sky is the limit! As we kick off our 201314 Annual Appeal, we are asking for your support. Current goals are to catch up and get ahead of our current
needs so that we are ready for what may come in the future. The gymnasium is the only area at Holy Cross
that is not air conditioned and we are counting on your support to get this done.

Parents have described it as follows: “The Best Open House in Northern Kentucky” and “The information
that we gathered in that single session was amazing.” If you have a 7th or 8th grader who is trying to decide
where to attend high school, or you are just interested in finding out why Holy Cross is a front runner in the

teachers, the activities and the Spirit of Holy Cross. The evening’s activities on both November 6 and January 8

FOURTEEN YEARS IN A ROW!!!
For the FOURTEENTH year in a row, Holy Cross High School is at capacity! Although the class of ’13 boasted
120 students, our freshman class of 110 helps to meet our “at capacity” status! Thanks again to those who tell
their neighbors and friends about Holy Cross. An eye-witness account and a trip to an Open House are usually
all it takes to open someone’s eyes to the treasure of Holy Cross High School. While we offer eight college
credit or advanced placement courses to accelerated students, we also offer an award winning Academic Enhancement Program to students with learning disabilities. And in the middle, we offer a layered curriculum
that allows students the opportunity to challenge their areas of strength and build on those where they are
weak.
Welcome to the class of 2017 as well as our other new students, their parents and friends. Thanks to all
who have promoted the school by your presence in the community, by the way you have represented yourself
and by the witness you have been to Holy Cross High School.

REMEMBER WHEN?
by Jim Feldman `71
Often when our family has gotten together, the conversation has
turned to who was the best boys’ basketball player ever to come out of
Holy Cross. The names Dave Hickey ’65, Don Meyer ’65, the dynamic
duo of Steve Fritsch and Mike Niehaus ’69, the state qualifying team of
‘72, Andre McClendon ‘91, Joe Harney ’95 and now Tony Campbell ’13
are usually mentioned.
Of course, these guys played after George Schneider came in 1961, and
after we were blessed with a new gymnasium and Mr. Schnieder’s and
his successors’ unique coaching styles. Before that, we were sort of
always a pushover in basketball. The old gym didn’t even have bleachers , so not many fans could attend the games.
Nevertheless, whoever was the best could never hold a candle to who
received the most prestigious college athletic scholarship out of Holy
Cross. The recent passing of Jerry Rump ’59 brought back memories for
many of our early baby boomers of a 6’ 10” “gentle giant” who once scored 36 points in a game. Although I
went to school with his brother Steve for twelve years and I knew Jerry was a good ball player, I never knew
that he was recruited by Adolph Rupp and went on to play at the University of Kentucky, until years after I
was out of school. I started the first grade in the fall after Jerry had graduated in 1959. I had just heard bits
and pieces about him over the years.
According to his family, Jerry got rheumatic fever just before starting his junior year. He was bedridden for a
year and grew several inches taller during this time. By his senior year, he was back in circulation and better
than ever. Adolph Rupp came to the Rump’s home at 35th & Graff Streets, and wanted to see if Jerry
“measured up” for his team. “Standing on the steps, he took a yard stick and measured his height and saw his
heart for the game.” He played for UK for several years and finished his college career at Xavier University.
Oddly, there wasn’t much publicity about his being a future Wildcat player. Nowadays, it would be front page
news if a local boy made the team. But I guess times were different back then.
It should be noted that Jerry wasn’t the only Rump to bring fame to Holy Cross. The family has been a dynasty
here for years. Ken Rump ’65 started on the 1965 basketball team that went to the state finals. Theresa
Rump ’74 started on the basketball team and played for NKU. Steve ’71 started basketball until his senior
year, when he unfortunately broke his leg in a motorcycle accident in the summer of 1970, thus ending his
career prematurely. However, his offspring made up for his bad luck. Lisa ’93 excelled in basketball, softball
and soccer; Steve Jr. ’94 starred in basketball, baseball soccer and golf; Jenny ’97 played soccer and basketball; and Rachel ’98 played basketball and soccer.

ANNUAL APPEAL REPORT
The revised Annual Report format that appeared in the October issue of the Newsletter last year was successful, so we are continuing this format as we strive to cut costs and continue to use the donations of our
generous alumni, family and friends wisely. In the place of the Annual Appeal Book that used to be mailed, we
are combining the October/Fall Newsletter with the Annual Appeal Report. We have attempted to list all 201213 donors in the following pages. If we have omitted anyone, please accept our apology and let us know, so
that we can make corrections in the February/Winter Newsletter.
The annual Kick-Off Dinner was held on Tuesday, September 17, in Holy Cross Alumni Hall (cafeteria).
Thanks to the many who joined us to kick off the 2013-14 Annual Appeal.
Special thanks to Pat ’57 and Mary Gayle Dohrman ’58 Taney for serving as chairpersons for the 2012-13
Annual Appeal. Total donations to the school last year including Annual Appeal, memorials, restricted gifts,
grants, land acquisition, etc. were $385,105.51. Thank you so much for your support.
This year the Verst family, Tony and Marilyn Gadker ‘63 Verst and their children, Tonja Verst Lewis ‘85 ,
Anne Verst Julian ‘86 Becky Verst Houston ‘89, Nichole Verst Smith ‘91 and granddaughter Jayden Julian ‘12
were introduced as the 2013-14 Annual Appeal Chairpersons. The Verst Family have been connected to Holy
Cross in many ways throughout their lives. Marilyn and the Verst/Julian girls are all graduates of Holy Cross
and continue to be very active at Holy Cross. Anne has been the Athletic Director, former Academic Enhancement Chair, teacher and coach, Becky is in her 8th year as head volleyball coach, and in recent years, it would
not be unusual to see Marilyn and Tony at school entering data or cutting the grass! Tony and Marilyn have
been avid supporters of Holy Cross and are members of the Holy Cross High School Service Hall of Fame.
They were joined by student council president Daniel Reynolds, Principal Mike Holtz and Director of Finance, Clay Eifert, as they spoke about what Holy Cross has meant to them and the plans that are in place for
the future.
The Annual Appeal pamphlet was mailed to all Alumni, Parents and Friends recently and should have arrived in your homes. Please take a minute to look at the mailing and prayerfully consider a donation to the
2013-14 Annual Appeal.
On the following pages, you will find a letter from The Verst family, the results from last year’s appeal, goals
for the 2013-14 Appeal, (which includes air conditioning the gym!!!), and a listing of donors to the 2012-13
Annual Appeal Campaign.

Help Make Our Dreams Come True!
2013-14 HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL APPEAL
Dear Holy Cross Alumni, Family and Friends,
It is a pleasure to serve as “Annual Appeal Chair-Family” for 2013-14. Holy Cross holds a special place in our
lives because of all we have received as a result of our great education.
Holy Cross High School has distinguished itself from other area high schools by offering more than academic
education. Our experience as graduates of Holy Cross included lessons from the gospels of Jesus, a familyoriented community, and empowerment to become leaders in a diverse and global society that inspires us for
a lifetime.
2013 is the year to “Imagine the possibilities”. A possibility demands one’s utmost power, capacity and ability.
We believe in Holy Cross High School and want to make sure that it stays strong in its commitment to provide
the highest quality of education for all.
The Annual Appeal at Holy Cross is essential in the mission to provide our students with the absolute best academic and extracurricular programs. The tradition of the Annual Appeal has allowed for tuition assistance, facility improvement, technology advancement, and property acquisition, and these goals are still a major focus
of this year’s appeal. For the goals that have been achieved by your generous gifts, we are grateful. Now,
“Imagine the possibilities” of an air conditioned gym!
We are asking you to join us in the challenge to accomplish all of our goals as they are presented each year, but
this year we are asking you to “go the extra mile”, “dig deep” and help also with this goal. Why is air conditioning the gym a priority? The gym is a major focal point for prospective students and families. It is our greatest
assembly hall. Wouldn’t it be great if Holy Cross could regulate the heat in the summer and condensation in
the winter? Imagine the possibilities of summer camps for sports, drama, bible school and educational seminars. The more people on our campus, the more we can SHOW our story, and we are very proud of the story
of Holy Cross.
Remember what Holy Cross has meant to you or your loved one and consider making a personally significant
gift to support the school’s future. Help us reach all of our goals for this year’s appeal.
We sincerely thank you for your attendance this evening and may God Bless You!
Tony, Marilyn, Tonja, Anne , Becky , Nichole and Jayden
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” John 6:37
15
The gymnasium is the lone area at Holy Cross that is not air conditioned. This is a major
goal of this year’s campaign, but it will take the help of everyone to make it happen!
The need for tuition assistance continues to be a major concern. Many families are struggling
and need our help.
As technology advances, Holy Cross must stay current with the times. Ongoing investment
in computers and the latest technology will keep our students prepared for what lies ahead.
The campus continues to grow. The maintenance and improvement of all Holy Cross
properties and facilities is a constant concern and needs to remain a priority.
The life blood of a school is the faculty. We need to retain our best teachers.
It is necessary to increase the membership in the Society of St. Jude, the Believer.
Our future can be strengthened by gifts bestowed through Planned Giving.
The Society of St. Jude, the Believer
Holy Cross has faced its share of adversity over the past eight decades. But in every instance, the Holy Cross Community has come to
the rescue. Our strong faith, spirit of generosity, and “never say die”
work ethic, along with the blessing of heaven, have enabled us to
persevere through the most difficult times.
Please consider joining us in our renewed patronage to St. Jude
by becoming a member of “The Society of St. Jude the Believer”.
Your participation in planned giving is not only an expression of
faith, but also another sign of your spirit of generosity.
The proceeds for the Society of St. Jude the Believer will be used
to fund the tuition assistance needs of today’s and tomorrow’s students. Remembering Holy Cross with a planned gift is simple and
many benefactors will find that they are able to benefit Holy Cross to
a greater extent in their estate plans than they would be able to do
from current resources. Please consider joining the Society of St.
Jude, the Believer.
As a member, you will be joining others who share your belief in the
school and want to ensure that the school remains strong forever.
BEQUESTS AND WILLS
The most common means of providing substantial support in planned giving is to leave a bequest from you estate. A bequest in your will can be for:
A specific amount of money
A percentage of your estate
As a residual/remainder beneficiary after specific bequests are met.
If you have included Holy Cross as part of your Planned Giving, please let us know so we can enroll you in the
16
Society of St. Jude, The Believer. Contact Katie.wesseling@hchscov.com or call 859-655-2192.
CASH—CHECK OR CREDIT CARD
The easiest and most direct way to contribute to the Annual Fund is by check made payable to “Holy Cross Annual
Appeal” or by using Visa or Master Card. For credit cards, please include your account number, expiration date, gift
amount and three digit security code.
ONLINE GIVING
Making a gift to Holy Cross via the internet is quick, easy and safe. With our server, all the data, including your
credit card information, is safely submitted to our gift recorder for processing. Log onto the Holy Cross website
hchscov.com and follow the links to Alumni and Online giving. Use this link as often as you would like to donate once, weekly or monthly.
PLEDGE OR RECURRING GIFT
Some donors find that they can increase their Annual Appeal support to Holy Cross by making a pledge with payments spread over several months, with final payment by June 30. For your convenience, pledge payments can
also be made using your credit card. A recurring gift could also be set up whereby an amount as small as $10 a
month can be automatically deducted from your credit card monthly and will remain in effect until you notify Holy
Cross of any changes.
MATCHING GIFTS
Many companies will match gifts to secondary schools if you or your spouse are a current or retired employee.
Contact your human resources office to see if your company matches gifts for secondary schools. Most companies
require you to complete a matching gift form and send it in with your donation. There is also a link on the
hchscov.com website that will assist you in checking to see if your company matches gifts for Holy Cross.
SECURITIES
Stocks/Bonds/Other Instruments
A gift of securities may offer special tax advantages to some donors. Our Federal ID number is 62-157563

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS are the result of a gift that is given to the school as a one-time gift or that is gifted over time
to build the fund. The gift is invested and a scholarship is awarded annually based on a percentage of the fund balance
and/or interest that is earned during the year. Therefore, the ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP continues to grow and the
scholarship will always be awarded as a lasting memory to the named party. The following Scholarship Funds have
been set up in honor or in memory of the following people/organizations:
Bernadette C. Allgeyer
Alumni Association
Norman Arlinghaus Family
Tom Arlinghaus Family
Joseph & Dorothy Bamberger
Al Arlinghaus

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS are not endowed and are awarded annually as long as there is money in the account.
Some families choose to donate a certain amount of money each year that is awarded as a scholarship in honor of a
relative or friend. Some funds are built when someone dies and names Holy Cross as the recipient of memorial donations. In this case, a scholarship is awarded until the money that is donated is exhausted.
