Step 1 Ensure you have all the tools and fasteners you will need. Tools you may need: • • • • • • • • • • • • Pencil Ruler Tape measure Utility knife Screwdriver – Philips No. 2 Set square Spirit level Small wedges or spacers Hammer Chisel (sharp) Electric drill Drill bits Fasteners you will need Suitable screws or rivets to mount the hinges to your existing door frame. Two screws are supplied for fastening the striker plate to a timber door frame. If your door frame is made from a different material, you may need to purchase different fasteners. If you have any doubt or are unsure about hanging this door, prior to starting we suggest you contact an installer or appropriate tradesman to assist. These instructions are an assembly ‘guide’ only as all door frames, materials and construction may differ. Warning • When using power tools always ensure they are connected to an approved earth leakage protected power supply. • Do not use 240 Volt power tools outdoors if it’s raining or the job site is exposed to rain or water. • Always wear protective safety equipment (goggles or safety glasses) when using power tools and ensure that loose items of clothing, hair and jewellery are retained. • Clear the work area of any potential hazards before commencing work. 3 Installation Step 2 2.1 Decide if your door will be hinged on the right or left hand side (when viewed from outside). 2.2 The vast majority of screen doors are hinged on the right hand side, with the lock assembly on the left hand side (Fig. 1). 2.3 Your Hills Aluminium Screen Door can be installed with the hinges on the left hand side. Just position the door to suit the hinging requirements of your doorway. Note: always ensure the grille is positioned on the outside of your door. We suggest leaving approximately 3.0mm clearance on all sides of the door (Fig. 2). Fig. 2 3.0mm 3.0mm 3.0mm *3.0mm (refer to page 6) 5 Installation Step 3 (continued) 3.4 *You may want to leave a bit more clearance along the bottom edge to ensure the door opens freely. 3.5 You should check to ensure the area the door opens into is flat and free from obstructions (Fig. 3). 3.6 Using small wedges or spacers, position and adjust your door in the door frame. 3.7 Use a pencil to mark the position of the hinges on your door frame. 3.8 Remove the door, open the hinges and align them with the pencil marks on the frame. 3.9 Using a pencil, trace around the hinges and through the hinge mount holes. 3.10 When assembled your Aluminium Screen Door and hinges should fit to your door frame as shown in (Fig. 4). Fig. 3 Fig. 4 Door frame Section view showing hinge attachment Door stop 1-2mm clearance Use appropriate fasteners (not supplied) Hinge 6 Installation Step 3 (Continued) 3.11 If you are mounting to a timber door frame, rebate the hinge area by approx. 2mm (the thickness of the hinge) using a chisel and hammer to enable it to sit flush. 3.12 Drill appropriate size holes (to suit the fasteners being used) in the 3 screw hole positions in each hinge. 3.13 Fasten the door at each hinge position with one screw only. 3.14 Check to ensure the door opens and closes freely and sits correctly within your door frame. 3.15 Fasten the rest of the screws into the hinges. 3.16 Check that the lock is installed in the orientation shown (cylinder hole towards the bottom of door). If not, undo the two lock body screws, invert the lock and re-fasten (Fig. 5). Fig. 5 Door cut-out Lock body screw Auxiliary bolt Main bolt Lock body Cylinder hole Do not push in the auxiliary bolt as this may activate the locking mechanism. Do not remove filament tape securing main bolt. 7 Installation Step 4 Fit the handle assembly to your door. 4.1 Select the interior handle assembly (with the snib) (Fig. 6). 4.2 Ensure the handle points toward the door hinges. If necessary, rotate the handle. 4.3 While holding the snib ‘up’, fit the interior handle assembly onto the inside of the door. 4.4 Insert the square connecting rod through the lock body. 4.5 Locate the exterior handle assembly onto the outside of the door, (again ensuring handle points towards the door hinges) (Fig. 7) 4.6 Fit the 2 handle assembly screws Do not fully tighten yet. Ensure it rotates outward towards the edge of the door (Fig. 8 and 9). Rotate the cam to its closed position, remove the key and insert into the lock body (Fig. 9). 4.8 Insert the M5 x 30 countersunk lock cylinder screw. Do not fully tighten Fig. 8 Fig. 9 Screw cover cap Auxiliary bolt Main bolt Lock cylinder screw Cam Cam must be in closed position and face towards the edge of the door (as shown). 4.9 Cut and remove the filament tape securing the main bolt. To do this we suggest you use a utility knife and insert the blade between the lock body and door frame on both sides. Ensure all tape and glue is removed (Fig. 10). Fig. 10 Slide knife in gap between lock body and frame to cut tape (both sides) Filament tape Take care when using sharp tools. 4.10 Now push the auxiliary bolt in, to release the main bolt. 4.11 Turn the snib to the horizontal position. 4.12 Insert a key and ‘lock and then unlock’ the lock assembly to ensure the main bolt is free to retract. 4.13 If your lock mechanism is not working correctly refer to page 11. Re-setting the lock mechanism. 4.14 Tighten the lock cylinder screw first, then tighten the two (2) handle assembly screws. 4.15 Insert the two (2) screw cover caps. 9 Installation Step 5 Fit the striker plate into your door frame. Note: These instructions only apply to timber door frames. 5.1 Rotate the handle lever to withdraw the main bolt. 5.2 Close the door and pencil mark the door jamb at the points opposite the top and bottom of the main lock bolt (Fig. 11). 5.3 Open the door and place the striker plate on the two pencil marks and run a pencil around the rectangular opening, through the two screw holes and around the outline of the striker plate. 5.4 Drill two small pilot holes for the screws. 5.5 Chisel out the marked rectangle to a depth of 18mm and the outline to a sufficient depth to allow the striker plate to sit flush with the door jamb. 5.6 Fit the striker plate with two screws. 5.7 Check that the lock bolt engages properly in the striker plate and that the recess is chiselled out deep enough. 5.8 Check that the door can be locked and unlocked with the snib. 5.9 Check that the door can be locked and unlocked from the inside and outside. Fig. 11 Door jamb Striker plate Rectangular opening Striker plate screw 10 Re-setting the lock mechanism Re-setting the lock mechanism If your lock mechanism is not operating correctly the auxiliary bolt may have been accidently ‘pushed in’ causing the mechanism to activate and lock out of sequence. A To re-set your lock, you must remove the lock cylinder, handle assembly and lock body from the door. B If the mechanism is out of sequence, the spring loaded slide will be in the ‘up’ position as shown (Fig. 12). C To re-set you will need to push the slide down with a screwdriver (Fig. 13). D Now press in the main bolt. Do not touch or push the auxiliary bolt. E Re-assemble as per instructions starting at step 3.16 on page 7. Note: This operation can be viewed on the Hills website, www.hills.com.au Fig. 12 Fig. 13 Slide ‘up’ 11 Lock Operation and Care and Maintenance Lock Operation Your lock has 3 positions, unlocked, snib-locked and key locked. These are in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction depending on the left or right hand hinging of your door. Care and Maintenance Your door is manufactured from aluminium to provide excellent resistance to corrosion. However, it is good practice to wash the door twice a year to remove any grime/dirt build up to maximise the life of your paint finish. Use clean water (with a small amount of detergent added) and a soft brush. Do not allow strong cleaning fluids (or agents), acids or solvents to contact the door. Hinges should be oiled lightly twice a year. The lock is lubricated at the factory and should not require further attention. Do not oil the lock cylinder.
