Access courses are designed to help you return to
education by offering the skills and confidence necessary
for success in Higher Education and progression to your
chosen career.
Available to people aged 19 or over, they’re nationallyrecognised qualifications that can be completed in one
year of full-time study. Pathway options include:
Nursing and Midwifery
This pathway prepares you for a career in nursing,
midwifery and related professions. It’s designed to give
you the skills and the qualifications you need to progress
to a degree course at university.
Science
Are you a scientist at heart? Do you want to work in
the science or health professions? Then this pathway
is the ideal stepping stone to a place at university and,
ultimately, to a career within the science sector.
Entry criteria and fees:
You’ll need GCSEs in English and maths (grades A*– C),
plus there’ll be a range of assessments at interview.
All students are assessed for their English and maths
skills to ensure they’re working at an appropriate level
to complete the programme. In addition, you’ll need to
have relevant work experience and be able to show your
commitment to completing the course.

Target Setting, Progress and
Attainment sessions
We want every student to succeed and be happy. If you
join us your personal tutor will be supporting you from
day one. You’ll agree an individual learning plan (ILP),
helping you to think about what you can achieve on
your course but also wider projects, activities and workrelated opportunities.
Other sessions with your personal tutor will discuss
target setting, progress and attainment. There’s also
your group tutor to turn to for advice. We want to
help you achieve your goals and prepare for your
future career.
The Virtual Learning Environment
The VLE offers access to materials for coursework and
assignments as well as links to websites, quizzes and
other helpful resources. Students can access the VLE
24/7 from College and at home, uploading finished
assignments and having them marked online.
ProPortal and E-Portfolio
Full-time students have access to our online markbooks
ProPortal and E-Portfolio. It’s here that tutors record
grades, attendance and punctuality. You can see the
progress you’re making and plan for future projects. As
your course progresses you’ll also be able to see the
grades you’ve achieved and check your predicted final
grades.

If you ever need extra help with an assignment you can
book yourself a one-to-one study skills session with
our LRC staff. They can provide advice on planning

Student Life
Every year a full programme of activities is planned.
These include GAP work experiences, trips, visits, talent
competitions, external speakers and careers talks. Some

We are one of the few Colleges lucky enough to have
our very own Sport Maker. They work on behalf of Sport
England and have set up a number of clubs including
badminton, football, basketball, table tennis, rock
climbing and judo.

Childcare and Social work special requirements
We rely on your references to help us judge your
suitability for the course, therefore you must complete
this section. For school or college students your referees
can be your Head teacher, careers officer, course tutor
or Head of Year. For mature students, your referee must
be able to judge your potential to study at this level e.g.
an employer or someone who knows you well. Referees
cannot be family members.
If your studies feature contact with vulnerable people,
you will be asked to complete a Disclosure and Barring
Service (DBS) form before starting your course. This will

To apply for an apprenticeship you will need to have a
job relevant to the apprenticeship that you are applying
for and an employer who will support you with your
apprenticeship. We will need details of your employer so
that we can work with them to support you. If you are
not employed we can offer advice on finding a job and
