There are two main costs that you will need to think about: 1. Tuition fees to pay for your course 2. Your living costs Any HE student studying on a full time Degree, Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma course can apply for a loan to pay for the tuition fee (tuition fee loan) and may be able to get some help with living costs (e.g. food, books and accommodation). Many of the courses in this guide are eligible for HE funding, and we’ve let you know if that’s not the case. 1. Tuition Fee Loan Regardless of your income or background you will be eligible to take out a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the costs charged by the College for the course. This loan is completely optional, and is available to you in every year of HE study. This loan is repayable, and you can find out more in the repayments section overleaf. 2. Help with living costs All full time students are eligible for a Maintenance Loan to contribute towards their living costs. The amount you get will depend on your household income, and as it is a loan it is repayable. You may also be eligible to receive a Maintenance Grant depending on your household income. For example, if your household income is less than £25,000 you will receive a full £3,250 grant. You will not have to pay back a maintenance grant. 06 There are also extra grants available, for those who have particular circumstances relating to childcare, disabilities and learning needs. On top of this the College may offer bursaries. These funds do not have to be paid back. Access to Learning Fund Each year the College is given a very small bursary to support students in hardship. Applications are means tested and funds are available on a first come first served bases. Students will need to have applied for their full financial assistance from Student Finance England prior to any Access to Learning funds being released. Please contact our Student Finance Team on 01256 306394 for further information. Part time study From 2012 part-time students will be able to receive a loan for tuition fees, but not for living costs. You apply online to Student Finance England for loans and we can provide guidance on this in College. You can find out how much you may be able to get by logging on to www.direct.gov.uk. Repaying your loans Any loans you take out are repaid through the income tax system. That means once you’re working, your employer takes it off the payroll, it simply reduces the amount you receive in your pay packet. You will repay 9% of everything you earn annually above £21,000 (pre-tax salary). If your earnings are under £21,000 you do not make any loan repayments. For example if your income each year before tax is £24,000, your monthly earnings before tax are £2,000 and your approximate monthly repayment would be £22 (9% of £3,000). You will stop making repayments when you’ve cleared the debt or 30 years have passed (from the April after graduation), whichever comes first. If you’ve not cleared the debt within 30 years then the remainder is simply wiped, with no link your credit score, or other financial information. Location I’ve new confidence in my ability It’s easily within my budget It’s the best decision I’ve ever made Taking the next step on my journey So grateful for the path I am now on Jill Jones Tasha Rogers Matthew Walker Claire Millward Tamazin Van der Walt “I never realised before I started this course that I would actually enjoy Finance and Law! Doing this HND has opened a whole new world of opportunities to me. I am now seriously considering going to University at the end of my HND to do a one year top-up to gain a degree. Previously I had always thought that university was way out of my league – not anymore. BCoT has given me confidence in my own ability and I am really excited about what the future holds for me.” “I didn’t know before I came to BCoT that International students can study here as a home student, making the fees far more affordable. I think success is all about what works for you, and doing this HND is certainly ticking all the boxes for me. The classes are small and the lecturers engaging. Here you receive individual attention, mentoring and support and I really feel that BCoT is preparing me for the next stage of my educational journey.” “I had no idea that you could work towards a degree on a course-work based programme until I came to BCoT. Doing this HND is the best decision I could have made. I have responded so well to the personalised approach to teaching at BCoT - it just suits me. I love the fact that everything does not come down to one exam. I can work with my tutors to produce highquality work throughout the year and, if I stumble, they pick me up and I move on. This flexible way of working is definitely the way to go - I’d recommend it to anyone.” “To be honest, I did have high expectations of this course as last year I studied the Level 3 Foundation in Art and Design and loved every minute of it! The degree programme allows you to develop your creativity and design work, and every day you discover and learn more. I already feel so prepared for life after BCoT and I’m only in my first year. I never knew that this degree would open up such a whole new world of opportunities and make my educational journey so exciting I feel very lucky.” “This course has quite literally been everything and more – I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed it, and how much I’ve learnt. Every single day I’ve discovered and tried something new. I never anticipated I’d learn so much, and be so prepared for my future career. I feel really sad that I’m in the final year of my degree now as BCoT has been my home for three years – I don’t want to leave this place, but am so grateful for the path it has set me on.” HND Business Management – Year 1 HND Business Management – Year 1 HND Business Management – Year 1 BA Fashion and Textiles – Year 1 BCoT BA Fashion and Textiles – Year 3 Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) Worting Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire, RG21 8TN BCoT is located in Basingstoke, Hampshire and is easily accessible via road (M3 Junction 6), rail (10 minutes walk from Basingstoke station) or bus.
