PAGE 2 2013 PISCATAQUIS VALLEY FAIR
Dedications
This year Piscataquis Valley Fair has lost two valued and loved members.
Therefore, we are dedicating this year's yearbook to the memories of Kenneth
Johnson and Valerie "Susie" Ricker.
Kenneth F. Johnson lived in Parkman, Maine, all of his life. He is survived by
his wife, Patricia (of 50 years), their five daughters, twelve grandchildren, and
two great-grandchildren.
He was a dairy farmer until 1996 and raised beef until he passed on May 16th,
2013. Kenny had work horses all of his life. He would use them in the woods; he
pulled them at the fairs, and participated in the Farmers Draft Horse Events.
Kenny worked at the fair for many, many years. He was a director for a number of years, but you would see him most generally in the pulling ring helping
out Stewart Hopkins and his daughter, Karna Johnson, with Horse Pulling, running the Farmers Draft Horse Events, and helping Pat run the Skillet Throw.
Kenny will be greatly missed; the pulling ring will not be the same without his
presence. He was a great, husband, father, Bamp, and friend.
Old Farmers never die, they just go to seed.
Valerie "Susie" Ricker was a long time devoted member of Piscataquis Valley
Fair. Her many talents, as well as her effervescent presence, will be greatly
missed.
Susie was one to always willing to step up to a challenge of any job that needed to be done. Her pleasant, willing personality had a way of shining through
even the most tedious of tasks.
She worked in and later successfully managed the Ice Cream Parlor for many
years, making it an enjoyable gathering place, both before the fair during work
sessions and during the fair for members and fairgoers alike.
Among her other many hats she wore were serving as a board member, handling the fair passes, T-Shirts, flyers and whatever else came her way. This only
covers her unselfish devotion to the fair. She also was involved in many other
volunteer entities, such as working for the Milo Recreation Department,
P.A.W.S. and providing meals for anyone in need.
This year, even though she is not with us physically, we fully feel she will be
with us in spirit.
Therefore, it is with great pride and love PVF dedicates this year's fairbook to
the memory of Susie Ricker and Ken Johnson.
Farm Family- Cleaves Farms
Charlie and Bill Cleaves are the third generation of the Cleaves Family to own and operate Cleaves Farms in
East Sangerville. Originally, the farm raised dairy cows and potatoes. In the early 1960’s, the boys’ father,
Faunce, who died in 1992, along with their mother, Marion, decided to sell the cows and specialize in raising
early generation seed potatoes.
Cleaves Farms is a specialized seen producer that raises 175 acres of Foundation Seed for sale to other potato
growers. These potatoes are marketed and sold up and down the East Coast. They also raise 225 acres of silage
corn and 50 acres of oats grown in a
crop rotation system. Corn silage,
hay and grain are sold to local dairy
farmers. In the winter months, they
selectively harvest their woodlands
and sell firewood.
Today the family farm tradition continues. Charlie’s son, Tobey,
works on the farm full time with his
father, and Bill’s sons, Will, Justin,
and James help out whenever they
are able. With the birth of Will’s son,
Carson, this spring, Cleaves Farms
will hopefully continue for many
more generations.

Piscataquis, Penobscot, & Somerset Counties. All entries must be submitted to the Piscataquis County Extension
Office, 164 E Main St., Dover-Foxcroft no later than Monday August 5, 2013. For complete details: www.extension/umaine.edu/piscataquis/
