This voltage comparator design, called Quantum Voltage Comparator (QVC), is for the next generation deep sub-micron low voltage CMOS flash A/D converter (ADC). Unlike the traditional differential voltage comparators designed to minimize input-offset voltage error due to the mis-matches in a differential transistor pair, the QVCs are designed to optimize the input offset voltages by systematically and uniformly varying the transistor sizes of the differential transistor pair. The QV comparators allow very small voltage comparison, complete elimination of resistor ladder circuit and dramatic improvement of linearity in an ADC. The same design is compared with the conventional comparator with resistor ladder network from this technique, reduction of power as well as area, also avoiding tedious fabrication process of constructing resistor on silicon can be obtained and thereby cost can be reduced substantially. Since in this design resistor ladder for reference voltage is not used as in conventional comparator, the same reference voltage (Vref) is generated internally by changing size of the transistor in terms of width, keeping the length constant. INTRODUCTION One of the major problems in the Threshold Inverter Quantization (TIQ) flash ADC1 is a noise susceptibility of the TIQ comparator. Because the TIQ comparator, which consists of two cascaded inverters, has a singleended input, the comparator is very sensitive to power supply noise. In addition to the power supply voltage variation, temperature variation makes the DNL and the INL increased in the TIQ flash ADC. To overcome these problems, the authors of this article have proposed a new comparator called Quantum Voltage Comparator (QVC). The QVC does not use a resistor ladder circuit. The QVC has been devised from the differential comparator2 with the application of the TIQ comparator concept to generate the internal reference voltages. Designed quantum voltage comparator for a 5 V three-bit flash, ADC is designed with 0.3 µm CMOS technology3 and compared the same with ladder resistor network in three-bit normal comparator flash ADC. Figure 1 Circuit diagram of a QVC The schematic representation and voltage transfer characteristics (VTC) of the proposed QVC are shown in FIGURES 2 and 3, respectively. QUANTUM VOLTAGE COMPARATOR The main idea of the TIQ comparator is that the reference voltage is internally fixed by the transistor size of the inverter2. Hence, no additional circuits are needed for the reference voltage. This idea has been applied to a differential comparator as shown in FIGURE 1. This paper was presented and discussed at the Technical / Seminar session held concurrently with the Twenty-third IEI Convocation and Technicians' / Students' Convention at Dharwad on October 10, 2015. Volume 96, December 2015 Figure 2 Schematic representation of a QVC 3 Figure 3 Voltage transfer characteristics of a QVC In conventional differential comparators, the transistor sizes are standardized and input voltage Va is taken from a Vref generated by a resistor ladder circuit. Therefore, all 2n - 1 comparators for n-bit flash ADC are identical. On the other hand, the QV comparator has different transistor sizes of transistors Q3 and Q4, while transistor Q1 and Q2 are identical. With this intentional mis-match in the differential pair, the reference voltages can be created internally to comparators. On account of this mismatch, 2n- 1 different sizes of QVCs are needed for the flash ADC implementation. Figure 4 Schematic diagram of a resistor ladder and normal comparator for conventional flash ADC Figure 5 Schematic diagram of a QVC design for flash ADC By systematic increasing and decreasing size of transistors Q3 and Q4, each of the 2n- 1 comparators has a different reference voltage. One may notice that the differential pair's transistor sizes are systematically increasing and decreasing. DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF FLASH ADC FIGURE 4 shows the schematic diagram of a resistor ladder and normal comparator for conventional flash ADC, the resistor ladder for generating referance voltage to comparator. While constructing these resistors in silicon, it consumes huge area as well as power. Implemented design in order to avoid resistor ladder, called Flash ADC using QVC, is shown in FIGURE 5. Figure 6 Transient response of quantum voltage comparators switches to different voltages The schematic diagram of resistor ladder network and respective comparator is shown in FIGURE 4. This is designed for three-bit flash ADC. Hence, eight resistors are required, by designing using QVC. The resistor ladder is completely eliminated, hence drastic power and area can be minimized as shown in FIGURE 5. Designing with QVC and simulating with the static electric 9.05 version CAD tool, one finds that comparator switches to different voltages, as shown in FIGURE 6. Layout of a single QVC is shown in FIGURE 7(a) and integrating all seven compartors is shown in FIGURE 7(b). The simulation of the same layout is shown in FIGURE 8 while keeping Vin as 5 V in order to switch all the comparator. FIGURES 9 and 10 show the sinking current keeping VDD and Vin 5 V for QVC and resistor ladder, respectively. 4 Figure 7(a) Layout of a single QVC Figure 7(b) Layout of seven QVC in integral form EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND COMPARISON The simulation result of QVC by taking Vin as 5 V in order to make the sequence as binary value 1111111 IEI Journal-TC Table 1 Comparative analysis of two systems Conventional (with resistor ladder) Quantum voltage comparator Percentage of reduction of power in QVC compared to resistor ladder Reduction power, in MW, compared to resistor ladder : 49.25 MW : 18.9 MW : 61.62 % : 30.35 MW Figure 11 Comparative analysis of power consumption in flash ADC CONCLUSION Figure 8 Transient response for V = 5V of output with “1111111”(QVC) Figure 9 Transient response for I = - 3.78 mA of output with “1111111” (QVC) The new QV comparator has been designed, simulated and implemented to verify the low voltage operation for three-bit QVC flash ADC. The ADC and the three-bit normal flash ADC are seen correctly operating with high speed and low power consumption. The simulation results show that the QV comparator has a great advantage in power consumption. Comparative and simulation results show the summary chart, comparing the QVC flash ADC with the normal flash ADC. The QV comparators enable a flash ADC to achieve dramatic linearity improvement and large power reducing by 61.62% and also eliminating resistor ladder and thereby reduction of a area can be made. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Authors are thankful to the management, Principal, staff of SDM College of Engineering and Technology, Dharwad (Karnataka) for encouraging them for this study. REFERENCES Figure 10 Transient response for I = - 9.85 mA of output with “1111111” (resistor ladder) and the same result is shown in FIGURE 8. It is observed from the result that the power consumed by resistor ladder using normal comparator is 49.25 MW while using QVC is 18.9 MW. The power dissipation in the flash ADC can significantly be reduced by 61.62% using the QVC. The comparative analysis of the above-mentioned two systems is given in TABLE 1.
